chase_acow: the elf from the Rudolph cartoon reading a book titled "PORN" (winter porn)
So like always when I feel guilty and embarrassed that I was supposed to do something and couldn't do it, I retreat away from posting anything. You know, why do I have time to do this, but not that other thing?!? Trying to get in the habit of giving myself the same grace I'd give others. I go back to work tomorrow after a roller-coaster of five days off, and I plan to finish out the couple of [community profile] ficortreat surprises I still have outstanding.

My college football team is 3-6 and if I had to take a guess is going to miss going to a bowl game for the first time in 18 years. The coach is an ignorant piece of trash who complained that anyone complaining about this year's team is probably a failure at home and can't pay their bills. He offered up a shitty insincere apology the next day. We're never going to be rid of him because he's successful enough but such a whiny asshole in front of the media that no one else will hire him away. We pay him a shit ton so I'm not holding my breath on a buy out.

I gave up reading Jeff Vandermeer's new book Absolution - a prequel of sorts to the Southern Reach trilogy. The first part with the biologists was fine, but I do not care about Old Jim in the least and caught myself skimming trying to get to the good weird bits before I gave up and returned it to Libby. I'll try again later.

I am reading Scratch the Surface by Mary Calmes and enjoying it quite a bit. It's m/m love at first fuck, but as individual characters they are fleshed out, quirky people, who are not just interchangeable because they (unlike a bunch of these boilerplate romance books) actually have personalities. So their romance is a nice steady march toward trusting each other, and then the weirdest and most outlandish things happen to one of the characters to keep the pace and plot(?) going. IDEK but I like the two boys and I'm cheering for their happily ever after.

and then there's the orange fucking elephant in the room )

chase_acow: Mass Effect Shepard quote "Don't fear the Reapers." (me reapers)
Rec: in the shadows of every spark - a perfect Top Gun/Mass Effect fusion - Jake/Bradley - explicit
here’s no version of this galaxy that he’d want to be in without him. he’d face down a batarian stealth fighter armed with its own rail cannon for him, and he did just that, and he got rooster home free. no hangman without rooster, and all that.

or: jake and bradley and the reaper war.

The author remembers where the shift key is for capitalization in the fic, I swear.

Top Gun Maverick icons from a battle. There are so many awesome icons.

Fashion at the NFL draft. These are some bold looks, and I like most of them. I couldn't care less about the actual draft.

I am all for the writer's strike. Get 'em. I'm glad I'm not heavily invested in any kind of story heavy drama this time around (RIP SPN season 3). I think I might be over 9-1-1 and 9-1-1 Lone Star. They have finally reached my saturation point for dealing with ridiculously over the top, hurt/comfort, dramatic story lines. They barely show the dispatch or rescues in recent episodes. Also, I just can't stand TK so the wedding arc has been a nonstarter. Carlos is great.

The Rookie I've been less into as well since they brought the new rookie on. Selina should have been bounced from the program the first day when she whined about how being right was better than following probable cause rules. The rest of the show is at least thoughtful copaganda, but she is not a good cop and can't compartmentalize her own personal baggage.

I watched the big game yesterday - and wow, am I bad luck for Philly sports. Kansas City and their fans can fuck right off. I don't much support the national anthem and we play it way too much, but I have zero patience for fanbases that change the words at the end. They can also change the name and stop their chop, then we'll talk.

Poor Miles Teller, but him, his wife, and puppy make a good commercial though. )

Tubi's bunny commercial freaked me out. )

I made turkey and swiss sliders and ate my first vegetable for a week. I got lightly breaded greenbeans for the air fryer and they are a handy trade out for fries. Listen, I hate greenbeans any other way, but these are delicious.

The schedule shifted and I only have to work Tues and Wed night before I flip my sleep! \0/ Then I start days on Sun which is the most boring of days. I still want a new job.
chase_acow: jack'o'lantern (fall lantern)
All right, the kitten has a home with me. Her name is Bear because of the stubby tail and how she growls when she eats.

I love all the animals equally, but some are more equal than others )

My team laid the worst goose egg today. The fan base is completely melting down on twitter and the message boards, and I am enjoying it! Posers. Back in MY day we counted first downs as a win and didn't expect to go anywhere in December, and we still loved our loser team. . . Some of that was true.

Spotify’s Gimlet studios released its latest podcast today — Case 63. An English language adaptation of creator Julio Rojas’ Caso 63, this 10-episode audio drama follows a New York psychiatrist (Julianne Moore) who begins treating a patient (Oscar Isaac) that claims to be from the year 2062. Following a format that presents itself as recorded therapy sessions, listeners are taken along for the ride as the story quickly evolves into something that threatens the boundaries of the possible and the real.

10 episodes of 10-15mins each. I'm halfway through but I'm really enjoying it. Both actors do an amazing job. It's pretty heavy into world ending pandemics, so make sure that won't make you feel worse about real life.

New fave Glen Powell was on GameDay this morning as their guest picker for Texas v Alabama. Dude has a similar football philosophy, and most importantly, picked my team.

how does he look so good in a mullet? )

I am still very pleased by my Rooster/Hangman fic where Hangman forces everyone to watch Texas v Oklahoma.

Also, super tired of working. I go in for a ten hr shift to cover the football game tonight and it is day 11 of 12 consecutive I had to go to work days because my days off got eaten by a coworker catching covid. I only had to work 6 and 4 hrs each for my days off, but it still decreases my de-stressing time. I don't think I've caught covid yet since the beginning, I desperately don't want to get it and I am still mostly being safe about things, but a week off without using leave would be awesome.

Mackie is almost 6 months now, and he's a little 9lb bowling bowl who gallops across the house at all hours and is testing new things he can jump on. He's gonna be such a big little asshole cat, I am excited to see how his personality settles in.

chase_acow: Let's Go to Prison a fistbump in the showers (random fist bump)
Someone finally picked one of my male!Adaar/Dorian Pavus prompts to write for me and I was so pleased! There were bears! And pining! And confessions! Kisses!

Enclosed by [archiveofourown.org profile] Zilentdreamer
“Will it make you feel better if I admit you were right?”

Crouched over Dorian on all fours and surrounded by rock that was still making ominous rumbling noises above them, Jarad thought about it for a second. “Not right now it won’t. Maybe once we’re not half buried under a mountain.”

It was for a male slash flash challenge where the due dates were not especially well explained and ended up with me writing mine in about an hour. I also asked for cop/criminal but when it came to writing it, I froze in the implications of making Sam a criminal. Like sure I could have gone with the comics fauxpas of Snap Wilson and tried to make it better, but I was scared of fucking it up. As much as I like the trope and wanted a more straight take of it, I remembered The Fugitive and off I went.

The Fugitive Sam Wilson/Bucky Barnes -G -1,377 words
“I didn’t kill my partner,” Sam yelled, desperation fueling his voice when all he wanted to do was whimper and mourn. He’d been running for days now and every time he thought he’d found a way back inside his life something had gotten in his way, most recently a particularly aggravating and attractive Federal Marshal.

I also posted a bingo fill for "awkward sex" and now I'm googling "how to spank an adult" and I fear for my search history.

Lube -> Not Just for Weird Stuff Sam Wilson/Bucky Barnes -R -2,144 words
"Listen," Sam said, moving the pot of oatmeal off the lit burner so it could cool. He let his mouth carry him forward before he put this conversation off again. "I have mostly resigned myself to having awkward conversations with time broken, old, white dudes."

-------------

We won the football game yesterday. I mean we were 17.5 pt favorites so, duh, but we also got the drama of the first string qb getting a thumb ouchie the back-up (who is well loved and the fans have been asking for all season) got to play, threw a long-bomb on his first series, and generally didn't make mistakes. The refs weren't calling the other team for some rather egregious chippiness so I also got to boo a lot. I love boo-ing the refs.

Dad was in a mostly good mood. We had a 10am beer and bratwurst. I was not the best seeing-eye-human for him and I felt bad, but he was real sweet. He's a yeller at these things, but he listens to the game on the radio, so he's about 5 seconds behind everyone else when he's congratulating the guy the just caught the ball or whatever. I really enjoyed watching folks react to him.

chase_acow: bucky from the comics looking away (comics bucky)
1. Falcon and Winter Soldier is getting an arc starting in February. I like the cover art and from what I could find of the artists other stuff, I'm in for a good time! I can't keep up with ongoing series or cross-over events or any of the other cool things comics is a great medium for, but I absolutely loved the 2018 Winter Solider mini run.

2. The dog's second attempt to spend a work day in the house also didn't go great. I made sure he couldn't get at the couch cushions, so I was a little afraid he'd go after the actual couch. Instead he murdered a box into itty bitty bits. It was one of the larger boxes the cat's litter comes in, so at least it wasn't a beloved box. (I have always had a box hoarding problem, and I was very disappointed when the cats won't play in them to give me an excuse to save more.)

2a. an unwanted mud bath as a response to him spending the day outside:

3. Who's idea was it to do NaNo anyway? I've got 18,287 words out of the 25,005 I should have at the end of today to be on track. I've finished three bingo squares, almost finished two more bingo squares, a flash fic, 2/3 (crosses fingers) of yuletide, and four scenes of the orig. The original work is not going well at all. I should have done more planning as I am still unsure of the antagonist or y'know why anything is happening to anyone.

4. I get to take my dad to the football game tomorrow, which I am super excited about but also means it's going to be a VERY long day when I also have to work 4-12. If it's slow and I think it should be, I'll probably leave a little early.

ETA 5. (I made a post!) Since "OK, Boomer." happened, for some reason GenX has decided to make sure everyone knows they still hate them equally and are enjoying this generational grudge match between millennials vs boomers, and a great many memes I've seen include Pearl Jam cds, and I as the extreme old millennial am honestly feeling very called out right now. I like Pearl Jam.

After much waffling for the week and inner soul searching about my ability to drive to a brand new place, park not stupidly, and then enter a house filled with people I didn't know, I caved and asked T if I could bum a ride. So, I went along with their family, was awkwardly introduced to the two guys already there that I didn't know, filled out a prop bet sheet, and then went to go find the cat.

Yeah, I used the cat card a little early in the night, but she was nice. Better than my two monsters would be meeting new people.

Then the house filled up. I gave everyone else, and especially the couples who didn't seem quite as obnoxious as the lone guys a chance at the couch, but when no one made a move, I claimed a cushion and then I didn't move for the entirety of the game. It was just a good thing their food spread was incredibly subpar. The upshot was that I watched the whole game, suffered through halftime, scored the commercials, and immensely enjoyed the Pats losing.

Despite clearly winning the weird loner award of the night, I had a good time talking to the guys I work with, and definitely was not the worst guest. That went to the guy who got sad because the girl he likes doesn't like him back so he drank enough to become the sad morose drunk in the corner quietly sighing every time the Pats didn't Brady all over the place. I brought him some chips after the game when everyone was in the other room doing something loud and scary.

Successful outing! \0/

Yuletide wasn't the same for me this year. It was so late and the changes were wonky. I didn't really know what to offer, because there was a lot less for me personally to choose from. I ended up with something I thought I could write and then failed miserably. This was the first year I defaulted, and I'm not sure I'll sign up next year unless they get it going a little quicker.

I did however see from the dear author letters, that someone wanted a fun Brady/Welker fic. I decided that was up my alley, so I wrote it for a treat and had some fun. Now I just need to write some smut for them, so I can scrub them out of my brain. This is my disclaimer, I hate the Red Solo Cup song, but it gets stuck in my head so easily. : )

Okay, so I've probably slept more in the last two days than I did in the last two weeks put together. I escaped Oktoberfest with a horrible sunburn, three splinters, and a broken pinky toe after losing ten pounds. I only managed to eat one side of potato salad, but I think I ate about a dozen schnitzel sandwiches. Me and roommate number 3 are still hoping for death, but hopefully we'll get our mojo back this week.

I have sucked hard in my Pick'em sheets for the last two weeks. Mostly, I randomly checked boxes, but I'm gonna get in the zone starting this week. If you wanted to join, do it, because you can still make up some ground! ESPN gives you ten college games to pick a week and you arrange them by how confident you are that you're right. This is our group and the password is: livejournal.

Did I mention that I went to see Don't Be Afraid of the Dark and I hated it? Katie Holmes was not good, and the movie made classic horror movie mistakes. However, it did inspire the plot I'm gonna write for my Teen Wolf Halloween story. It's gonna be scary, guys. Scary and awesome. : )

I'm behind on everything, so I'm very sorry for late comments that pop up in the next couple of days. I'm trying to write sequels and it's just not happening. I might go troll the kink meme for an easy prompt to pop out. Feel free to point me at something if you'd like. My brain still feels like mush.
chase_acow: cartoon cat Garfield looking cool incognito (sw L now)
My paid time expired just now so I have a Basic account for a little bit. I'm hoping I'll still get the 2 wks LJ promised the other day, and I hope I get it soon. : ( I miss my Teen Wolf icons.

Speaking of Teen Wolf, I haven't watched last night's episode yet. Please don't spoil me! I'm trying to finish what started out as a porn battle prompt and now won't shut up.

Also? FOOTBALL! We're less than thirty days away from the start of College Football, and NFL preseason starts in a couple of weeks. I admit, I've been overdosing on the NFL channel since the lockout ended. I wish there was better news out of Cleveland, but I'm glad Ochocino Chad Johnson finally escaped from the Bengals. Poor Shipley, he'll be stuck there for another couple of years.

My OSU Cowboys have a hell of a schedule, but I still think we can make some noise. OU is not as good as everyone is trying to make them sound. They'll lose some games. UT still needs a quarterback. Unfortunately, (e)aTm(e) looks crazy and it'll be tough to go to College Station and beat them.

I love this time of the year!
chase_acow: cartoon cat Garfield looking cool incognito (xmas star)
Hi there, you lovely person who got matched with me for Yuletide. I hope you're as excited as I am. : ) You should know that I'm already happy to be in this exchange and I'm going to enjoy whatever you write. I know that people have different ways of writing, and if you're one of those people who don't want to be constricted, then go write whatever is in your heart. If you'd like to know about my general likes read on, and at the end is a couple of fandom specific prompts.

Likes in General: Okay, I'm kind of a sucker for Christmasy themes. I like clichés, especially if there's a bit of a twist on a familiar trope. I'd prefer happy endings, but I definitely don't mind if there has to be some angst to get there. I don't mean excessive schmoopy, I just like for good things to happen to real people. I like those 'slice of life' fics that shed light on relationships. Speaking of relationships, I'm a fan of slash, femslash, het, and gen, so do whatever feels best for you with the prompts! I like characters making a family for themselves with each other. A lot of the characters that I enjoy are loners looking from the outside in. I really like giving these characters a taste of happiness and friendship.

I like the funny stuff. It doesn't have to be funny ha-ha, but slapstick, strange situations, snappy dialog, or the characters realizing how very odd their lives are all things I enjoy. I've got a very dry sense of humor that some people call odd, but I do enjoy a whole range of fun stuff. : )

World building is always appreciated. Sometimes it's the little details that really make a story come alive. I also really like the concept of magical realism or the heightened absurd. I think it's interesting and allows for great story lines.

I'd love a Christmas story in any of the fandoms. I love snow, loneliness turned to friendship, the craziness of last minute shopping, and the joy of spending time with people you like. Scenarios where everything goes wrong and Christmas never comes out perfect, but somehow it's always awesome grab my attention.

If you decide to get into relationships with any of these fandoms, I like slightly awkward first-times, reestablishing after a break up, a couple having to work to get on the same page, PDA, explicit sex, fade to black sex, back to front set, foot rubs, romantic gestures, pet names, and cuddling. You don't need to get all fluffy or anything, but some cuteness is nice.

Dislikes in general: I'm not a big fan of first or second person point of view and present tense. They're not deal breakers though, so don't stress out.

ESPN Pick'em is a fun game that lots of people are playing now. Starting at the beginning of the season, ESPN picks ten games for the week and then you log in and pick who you think is going to win and how confident you are about that pick. The site requires registration, but it is simple, quick, and they don't spam you with anything.

For [livejournal.com profile] slashthehuddle's little community, there will be prizes at the end of the season for whoever wins (gets the most points) the regular season and for whoever wins the Bowl Pick'em.

The group name is slashthehuddle and the password to join is "livejournal". You don't have to be a member of [livejournal.com profile] slashthehuddle to join, but I imagine there will be some fun smack talk going on over there. : ) Feel free to invite your f-lists or even real life (I've heard they exist) friends to join as well. If I end up playing by myself, I'll feel awful lonely.

Anyone can play! Some people take it really serious and look at the stats and previews, some people (me) go by hunches, and other people pick based on mascots and uniforms. \0/ It's entertaining and gets you into the whole college football season a little more.

Dear Yule Goat –

Thank you for signing up to write in a fandom I requested! \0/ I'm really just thrilled to see what you're gonna cook up. Please remember that the requests are just optional, and I don't want to stifle your creativity at all. Write a story that makes you happy and excited to sit down at your keyboard and I'm probably going to love it too. : )

Um, I got kinda long-winded, but I swear I'm not picky, so feel free to pick and choose whatever bits you want to read.

I am so boring, y'all. Currently, I'm cold calling and annoying people all over the state, which is amusing to me if no one else. My friend is writing a murder mystery in which I get to play Colt McCoy, which makes me ecstatic. Finally, I should be writing papers, but spring break is next week and I have nothing else to do. Life - I fail at it.

+ Dwayne Johnson makes me happy. Dwayne Johnson singing and shaking his tush is like The. Best. Thing. Ever.

+ College football spring practices have started! If you wondered who Colt McCoy is, here you go. Pictured with him is his room mate, favorite receiver, best friend, life mate Jordan Shipley. Just like their daddies were.

Okay, so they're kinda awkward there, but click here for the full football players romping all over each other, and being generally adorable experience. )

* Misc TV
- I gave up on Dollhouse someone tell me if something crazy happens.
+ Castle looks really entertaining.
+ I've never watched Celebrity Apprentice before, but I could not resist the combo of Dennis Rodman and Joan Rivers. I mean seriously, by their powers combined, those two could take over the world. Just think of the new fashions. 0_o

  • I don't care if it's old, kittens + metallica is totally awesome!

  • Cowboys ended up with a decent showing last Saturday, but the first half was ugly.

  • The county fair was looking for workers. I should have run away and joined them when I had the chance.
