chase_acow: philadelphia philies baseball player Marsh with wet hair (phils brother marsh)
For reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, I have been dog free for about two months.

I'm going to an 11am football game in two weeks, and since I spent the entire summer sleeping through the days in the a/c and working through the nights in a/c I am trying to readjust my internal settings so I don't immediately turn into a puddle of goo in the hot temps. Thus, I have been walking in the late mornings to get a little sun in short bursts on my lily white legs without burning and remind myself that it's okay to sweat in 80/90 degrees.

Folks, there have been bucket loads of sweat. It is so gross. Can't wait to be packed in like sardines with thousands of other sweaty, rowdy monsters!

I thought it would be weird to take a walk without a dog, but it is so nice! I'm not constantly watching their butt trying to make sure they don't eat anything bad or poop anywhere they shouldn't. I get to look at the trees and walk as fast as I want to without waiting for them to sniff things.

Next year I might think about getting another dog - definitely not a puppy - but for now I'm actually already making holiday plans because I don't have to worry about bad weather or keeping a dog outside when it's too cold. Not that it's too cold in December anymore, but I guess there's always a chance.

I was looking at these vintage winter photos, but then I just got sad that it's never gonna snow like this in my part of the country again. My lake is so low, I'm not sure there will be enough to get it up to swim worthy by the summer.

I guess I'm not going to specifically shout into the void for snowflake #3? I know that lots of folks prefer not to see any negativity anywhere. I am someone who wants to know that at least one other person hates the very specific thing that I also hate. So, okay, reverse psych worked! Here we go!

Generic Video Game irks - stop making everyone grunt all the time and/or give me the option to mute background speech (I'm looking at you last Tomb Raider game and Horizon Forbidden West singing section), and there should be a 5 fetch quest maximum per game and two of them have to be funny (I'm still looking at you Horizon Forbidden West - which don't get me started on Ted Faro).

Spotify’s Gimlet studios released its latest podcast today — Case 63. An English language adaptation of creator Julio Rojas’ Caso 63, this 10-episode audio drama follows a New York psychiatrist (Julianne Moore) who begins treating a patient (Oscar Isaac) that claims to be from the year 2062. Following a format that presents itself as recorded therapy sessions, listeners are taken along for the ride as the story quickly evolves into something that threatens the boundaries of the possible and the real.

10 episodes of 10-15mins each. I'm halfway through but I'm really enjoying it. Both actors do an amazing job. It's pretty heavy into world ending pandemics, so make sure that won't make you feel worse about real life.

Relationships: James "Bucky" Barnes/Sam Wilson
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe, Professional Wrestling - Freeform, the briefest mentions of pain medication addiction, the briefest mentions of racism and homophobia, ridiculous wrestling soap opera style storylines, Sam's real life is kinda ridiculous too though
Summary:

After Steve is screwed out of the championship by Rumlow and the surprise return of Bucky Barnes now playing a brainwashed goon called the Winter Soldier, Sam has to deal with his real life crush on Bucky and competing professional storylines for the camera.

When he outs them on national television during a tag-team match after Bucky gets hurt, the reaction from the world is actually positive. Sam has to decide what he really wants for a life after wrestling, but not before he wipes that stupid smirk off Rumlow's face and gets his own chance at the title.

1. Nobody really likes to be the victim of cruel hoax, but how do you feel about good-natured pranks that don’t cause harm? - I enjoy making myself look foolish to get a laugh. I'm a story teller, there is often exaggeration that I usually fess up to at the end. I don't really remember many pranks happening once I got out of college. But college kids are the worst, they clearly shouldn't prank. I wouldn't mind being the victim, and then getting revenge, but there would be a really small pool of people I'd be willing to hit first.

2 It’s Peanut Butter and Jelly day! What’s your favorite flavor of jelly or jam? - Raspberry (even with the tiny seeds) or if we're talking those little single serve packets at restaurants, the mixed berry is the clear best.

3 What’s one thing that you can do better than anyone you know? - I've somehow become the answerer of dog training questions among my group. I did years in 4H and went to state contests, I watched It's Me or the Dog with Victoria Stilwell, and have always thought Cesar Millan was ridiculous. 'Wait' is the absolute best thing you can teach your dog. Wait to eat, wait to go through doors, wait to jump out of cars etc. Now Dasher, my current dog, has some issues but I take full blame. This was my first dog without anyone else being involved and I think he's a little too attached. We're getting along better now, and he hasn't eaten any more couch cushions!

4 What picture is the wallpaper on the device you’re using right now? - I do the rotating thing so there's a lot of Sam and Bucky, paintings of cats, funny things, older fandoms and random pics that make me happy. Currently it is this gem. I'm still mad at work, I still want out, but with the state of things right now, I'm glad I'm still there . . . I guess.

In the end, I had a good time. Staying at Carl's house though it was still warm and still noisy (barking dog rather than 4+ tv/radio channels) was infinitely better than grandma's house. We still went to see her for a bit everyday and I sadly gave up watching the gooners get their butts handed to them to watch last year's Grinch movie with her. I imagine that mom's still in for some emotional manipulation/guilt tripping for a while, but I'm hoping this will be the year she gets out.

Dasher on the right up there with Rommel had a time. I'm not sure if it was a good time, as he wanted to play but only until Rommel started barking and then the barking would freak him out. He also only wanted to play if I was there for backup. Apparently anytime I left they both just fell over and slept. We did leave them alone to see the movie and they didn't destroy anything, so I'm hoping Dasher now understands that it can be done.

Saw Star Wars. )

I also made mom watercolor with me, and she seemed to have an all right time. Now I have her flower picture to hang on the wall to remember this holiday and how it wasn't actually the worst.

Now to start taking down all the decorations. . . ugh.

He's from Broken Arrow, OK which is why I first checked him out, but I really dig the music. It's all original lyrics, kind of a bluesy which I like way more than straight jazz which I can on occasion tolerate. I really like "Socks" and "Holly, Carol, Candy, and Joy".

Knives Out was amusing and while a little slow atmospheric, I enjoyed the whole thing. I was briefly distracted from the plot by Chris Evans in this white sweater, but I got back.

Took the Dasher to the dogpark for the first time since he got neutered at the beginning of September. He's so much better at playing the chase-you-chase-me game than he was before. Just ran right out there and got in the middle of everything. I was very excited my shins didn't take a beating again, however there were a group of three girls standing around talking and Dasher evidently thought their was safety in their numbers and crashed into them several times. He wore himself out good and is now having a nap.

1. Falcon and Winter Soldier is getting an arc starting in February. I like the cover art and from what I could find of the artists other stuff, I'm in for a good time! I can't keep up with ongoing series or cross-over events or any of the other cool things comics is a great medium for, but I absolutely loved the 2018 Winter Solider mini run.

2. The dog's second attempt to spend a work day in the house also didn't go great. I made sure he couldn't get at the couch cushions, so I was a little afraid he'd go after the actual couch. Instead he murdered a box into itty bitty bits. It was one of the larger boxes the cat's litter comes in, so at least it wasn't a beloved box. (I have always had a box hoarding problem, and I was very disappointed when the cats won't play in them to give me an excuse to save more.)

2a. an unwanted mud bath as a response to him spending the day outside:

3. Who's idea was it to do NaNo anyway? I've got 18,287 words out of the 25,005 I should have at the end of today to be on track. I've finished three bingo squares, almost finished two more bingo squares, a flash fic, 2/3 (crosses fingers) of yuletide, and four scenes of the orig. The original work is not going well at all. I should have done more planning as I am still unsure of the antagonist or y'know why anything is happening to anyone.

4. I get to take my dad to the football game tomorrow, which I am super excited about but also means it's going to be a VERY long day when I also have to work 4-12. If it's slow and I think it should be, I'll probably leave a little early.

It's been cold and rainy off and on, so I started letting Dasher stay inside overnight without being locked in his kennel. I went through and moved things I thought might be too tempting to resist, but he did great! Didn't bother anything. Only chased the cats (in a fun way?) a little bit and settled back down when I yelled at him. So, good! Excellent. He's almost a year old now, will be on Nov 5th. That's about what I'd expect for a young dog. I'd left him in the house before while I did some running around town for maybe a little over an hour - no issues.

Yesterday I had to go to work at 4pm. It was still cold and rainy. Okay, I had some cover coming in at 8pm letting me leave to come home real quick on my lunch break to let him out and just check things out. I didn't really expect any issues. I cleaned the litter boxes, blocked his access to the one in the living room. No big deal.

this dang dog ate my couch cushion. I mean, it's a crappy hand-me-down couch, BUT THAT'S WHERE I SIT! )

I honestly kinda thought the couch eating dog was an internet urban legend. None of my animals, and no one I actually knew has had this problem. Alas. And he peed on something. So into the kennel he went. I eventually found the cats crawling out from under my bed, so who knows just how much fun he had during his destruction.

Fine. No use yelling at him at that point. Whatever.

I cleaned everything up once I got home, reluctantly let him out of the kennel, fed everyone and then we settled down to watch Saw VI (don't judge me). I get off at midnight, but generally I need another hour or so to feel sleepy. I stayed up a little longer just because I was so irritated. So now it's 2am. Dasher goes back in his kennel. I've already decided to shut my door so I can sleep with the cats weighing me down. Brush my teeth, change my clothes, set my alarm, turn to my bed AND ONE OF THOSE DRATTED CATS AT SOME POINT AFTER I GOT HOME PEED ON MY BED.

gross.

So, I pull all the bedding off, start scrubbing, turn on my ceiling fan, and despair. Whatever happened with the dog was apparently Too Much for someone even if they all acting fine while we were hanging out.

3am, I ended up sleeping on the awful mattress in the spare room. Now I'm washing everything that was on both beds, because there was a suspicious stain on the second bed when I went to change those sheets to sleep.

Animals are the worst.

Dasher is six months now. We drove the five hours to visit my mom, and he is a very pleasant car companion.

He loves people which I'm real happy for, except when he tries to greet people while were out on the path trying to do my couch to 5k runs jogs forward shuffles with slightly more speed. So far we've only had near catastrophes, but no actual collisions with each other. (Just me and the dog, he's never actually got close to the other walker/jogger.) He was already good about walking, but we're getting closer to purposeful loose leash walking.

He really loves playing with other dogs, but it takes a time or two with the same dog to get his confidence up. He is ridiculously slow chasing those small dogs around the park. He's definitely bringing dishonor on our house. He still hangs out in a circle to wherever I'm standing and anytime he gets overwhelmed he makes a mad dash (though still in slow motion) to squeeze between my legs. He's still small enough it's not a big deal, but I'm learning to live with the bruises on my shins when he misses or the other dogs don't stop fast enough.

13 is still unhappy that he's here, and it's past getting on my last nerve. She was a feral kitten who got separated from her momma way too early. So while she likes me a lot, she disappears with other humans, she won't play or cuddle with Gray even though I adopted them together and before I got Dasher she was stressing Gray out so much Gray started over grooming. Gray's a lot better now, a combo of that she likes the dog and he's entertaining to watch and the fact that when Dasher is in the house 13 is a lot louder and easier to avoid. I don't know what to do with them. 13 got to the point where she was more confident with Shipley (the adult german shepherd who i dogsat sometimes), but he was old and didn't try to make friends with her.

I guess 3/4s of a happy household is nothing to sniff at.

Last night I tortured the puppy to keep him awake for an hour or so in the hopes that when I went to bed he would sleep for a good six or seven hours. AND IT WORKED! I felt a smidge bad, but also, I desperately long for the days when I'll be able to sleep for nine hours straight again.

In the past couple of days I started and finished the new She-Ra and I LOVED IT. I liked it better than the Dragon Prince, though I still wouldn't say no to a second season of that either, and Scorpia is my favorite. She's so good, I mean her parents gave her away, and sure she's a 'bad guy', but omg she is the sweetest clawed badass ever and I just want her to be happy. I am now looking for icons if anyone's found any.

I almost turned the first episode off, but let it go in the background while I tried to meet my word count goal for the day, and it definitely got better. Glimmer was a problem for me, but then she turned and I liked her. I love the animation, the theme song is catchy, and the episodes go by fast with an excellent mix of teenage angst, superhero angst, and sparkle fists to face action. Adora and Catra carry the emotional weight of the story well, Glimmer and her mom super work for me, the princess club could be interesting, and I was very entertained by Sea Hawk.

Bandersnatch on the other hand didn't particularly do it for me. I mean the interactive choice and redo feature is neat, but the character and storyline didn't get there for me. I love thought experiments about free will, but that was kinda incidental to the weirdness involved. I'm not a fan of Black Mirror though, so I doubt I was the target audience anyway.

I watched Annihilation again and still didn't get it, but I started the book, and I love it. I just assumed Natalie Portman was being odd and boring again, but reading the book from her character's pov, I really like the biologist. I haven't finished it yet, but almost. I can see how it's either a love it or hate it book.

As part of my plan to escape this year’s holiday slog in December, I drove out to Arkansas for my mom’s birthday last month. She is not really an outgoing person, she’s got some other stuff going on, and she stays up late and sleeps a whole lot. I wasn’t that interested in waking up early to let the dog out and then sitting in the kitchen by myself. So I asked her if she wanted to go on a float trip, and three days later she replied to my text with a ‘sure’.

That wasn’t enthusiastic enough consent for me, so I shrugged and packed an extra book.

On day two of my my exile into the hot land where the air conditioner never turns on, there are no comfortable seats, and no real food, mom wanders in about noon, and says - “So, when are we going on the float trip?”

facepalm

But, okay. So I find a place. Easy trip, kids and dogs welcome, 4-6 hours for an 8 mile stretch. The start point was about 40 mins away. I thought, yeah this one. Granted, I don’t think I’ve been outside for a combined 4-6 hours since I started night shift in Feb. But I went and bought two new bottles of sunscreen.

So, the good news is, I didn’t get sunburnt.

The bad news is, I’m the proud owner of a roughly used, broken rental canoe.

We had 7/8ths of a real good time. )
