Movie: I fucking loved The Monkey. I did not watch any trailers, had no expectations, had to ignore obnoxious loudness by the other folks in the theater, and I was absolutely into it. I'm not entirely sure how to describe what it actually was. Not a horror movie - but a couple jump scares. A super dark family dram-com? Gory for sure. Somehow uplifting. Hilarious. Thoughtful. Surprising. I enjoyed both Adam Scott and Elijah Wood in their small roles. perfect.

TV: I just need to shout into the void about how much I dislike the new rookies this season on The Rookie. )

Work: Our rookie put in her two week notice when she decided she was unwilling to work any shift but day shift in a job with mandatory 24/7 operation and a three month rotation so nobody goes stir crazy while on overnights. . . . Good riddance. I was already betting against her making it through fall. Defensive and unwilling to try when she didn't get the right answer the first time she tried. Also a lot of petty personal junk I won't get into. I did not appreciate the trauma dump during the first week, and most her problems were created by herself.

Well, I've had this create entries page open for over a week on two different computers trying to finish snowflake #1, or respond to a few comments and it just isn't happening so . . . blank slate pls? I no fault default because I am tired and itchy.

I think the cat across the street gave me fleas last month which I then distributed through the house. My dogs have flea collars and the cats get some juice on their necks, but I apparently taste delicious and can't stop itching everything. I'm still trying to win based on washing everything washable, vacuuming and spraying concoctions of peppermint or cedarwood/lemongrass. I don't want to figure out what to do with myself and the cats if I have to bomb the house, but it might come to that.

Transformative Works Policy: I don't really have any experience with transformative works. Some of my stuff has been translated, but that's it. I don't have any problem and give a wide permission statement on my DW and AO3 profiles. My two DNW are don't give my stuff to celebrities and don't add to goodreads. If anyone knows what I'd have to do to get my two fics off goodreads, I'd love to know. It's a weird feeling knowing that someone put them up there to let people rate my hobby fic there.

Current Passion: sleeping 8 hrs straight so I can survive another 6 wks of nightshift. But also, I still have Top Gun Maverick brainrot which includes a lot of Glen Powell and Miles Teller nonsense. Tumblr is every excited about awards season. I'm also still writing Sam/Bucky slowly but surely.

I like going to the theaters to see new movies. This year I've seen M3GAN and The Whale*, and I'm trying to fit in A Man Called Otto this week.

I love making character or pairing playlists on spotify.

Where to Find Me:

I'm really looking forward to the yelling into the void post. I'm very good at shaking my fist at clouds.

* I really enjoyed both M3GAN and The Whale and I don't know that they could have been any more different from each other.

I love a good horror western, and the trailer for Prey looks excellent, the main character looks like a badass woman. I don't really care much about the Predator franchise, but I will absolutely give this a shot. The film features a cast comprised almost entirely of Native and First Nation’s talent, and will apparently be available to watch in the Comanche language.

I enjoyed the back seat cow roping instructions in this video about a run-away cow headed for the interstate.

Anthony Mackie gave the commencement speech at No matter what field your degree is, you are an artist. You are a creator of thought and movements. You are the voice, eyes and ears of a generation. You will effect change," he said. "You now have the credentials to dictate your path, not for it to be dictated to you. Your story will be full of twists and turns.
chase_acow: the magnus archives a cassette tape fractured into a spider web behind it (tma tape)
My arch nemesis the ice-cream van driver woke me up before 6 yesterday, but my sleep schedule has been so wonky I decided to go with it, get up, and try to enjoy going outside to sit with the sun for a little bit. I started taking a vitamin D supplement with this round of night shift, but I figured some of the real deal couldn't hurt anything. Today the neighbor across the street was playing music in their front yard though it was only loud enough for the bass to get to my bedroom, and it sounded enough like polka to lead to the weirdest nightmare. . .

I've been listening to The Magnus Archives again, so it was a mash up statement with Oktoberfest )

I didn't watch a single men's ncaa basketball game, but my inner gambler/competitor couldn't help filling out a bracket. I decided first step was picking the team with more wins vs top 25 teams and then to go with my gut. I have Villanova winning it all.

I watched season 41 and the first episode of this new season of Survivor, and I love the changes. Most obviously, it's so diverse and THEY GET TO WEAR CLOTHES! There are other changes of course, it's 26 days instead of 39, so the contestants have to start playing a lot faster and it feels likes there's nowhere to hide.

60 year old Jeff Probst will no longer use 'guys' as a group pronoun and also he clearly made a deal somewhere to stop aging.

I finished reading Bird Box by Josh Malerman and it is very similar and very different than the Sandra Bullock Netflix movie (which I really liked). I enjoyed it quite a lot, and am now waiting for the sequel Malorie from the library.

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain on Amazon Prime starring Benedict Cumberbatch

"A biographical drama - English artist Louis Wain rises to prominence at the end of the 19th century for his surreal cat paintings that seemed to reflect his declining sanity.

After his father's death, Louis Wain tries to look after his five sisters and his mother as a freelance artist. He is fortunate that Sir William Ingram, editor of the Illustrated London News, offers him a job as an illustrator. His life takes another positive turn when Emily Richardson, the new governess of his sisters, steps into it. She becomes the love of his life, and soon they take in a stray kitten they call Peter. It is unusual in the Victorian era to keep a cat as a pet, and the cat pictures that Louis paints from then on are just as unusual."

I really enjoyed this. It's quirky, it's sad, but the ending is so hopeful.

[community profile] multifandomhorrorexchange letter!

I love horror, all kinds of horror. I am super excited for this exchange! I’m okay with gore and violence, I’m good with suffocating tension, with dark/morbid comedy horror, and while I’m not necessarily asking for it, I am totally okay with endings that aren’t happily ever after whether it’s one of those creepy nobody knows what’s about to happen or straight up they’re dead and/or live in nightmare town now. I like the broad stokes in the genre tags, but don’t feel like you can’t mix and match please, even if I didn’t pick it on purpose.

In general: sharks, aliens (including the unfriendly aspects of space), demonic deals or possession, cursed objects, the darkness and what lives inside, doubting your own senses, impossible architecture, Annihilation (both movie and book), extreme weather events (though no sharknados, pls), the thing under the bed or in the closet, overwhelming dread, losing control of your thoughts and actions.

Specific fusions I’d like to see: Krampus (I love the dark Christmas themes and twisted takes on tradition.), Pennywise (put him anywhere he’s not supposed to be, let him twist into what scares the characters most, and then shine those deadlights), The Magnus Archives (would the characters be Avatars? Of what domain? Or what domain are they stuck in? Are they a statement?), Saw (the traps are interesting and awesome gore, but I was always more interested in the psychology of why these people were picked and if they were willing to change their ways)

Fandom thoughts will go here before signups close hopefully: Falcon and Winter Soldier, Anne of Green Gables, Dragon Age, and Bioshock Infinite. )

on day 9 - called it.

The Grudge should be unwatchable. It ought to be unwatchable because once the director/editor/whoever saw the final cut of what they had wrought, they should have burned, buried, and salted all the evidence that they'd ever tried.

Shame on you Sam Raimi, normally even if you aren't good you're entertaining.
chase_acow: quote from Due South "Hey that's not buddies. I hate you." (ds buddies)
Netflix: Daybreak - post apocalypse teenage nonsense of love, redemption, zombies, and cannibals. I only recognized Matthew Broderick as the principal and Colin Ford (young Sam Winchester from Supernatural) who plays the main lead Josh. It's a love it or hate it format of wall-breaking, flashback, genre shifts, unreliable narrators, and POV shifts. I loved it. There are plenty of unhealthy relationships, some examples of character growth, characters making really bad choices followed up by trying to fix it for reasons which may or may not be altruistic. I really liked the way it ended. The big mystery of what happened to the adults is only slightly resolved, and we get the supreme overlord we deserve (though I'm sure it's going to go very badly).

Netflix: Queer Eye Japan - mostly naw. The first episode was great, but I doubt I'll rewatch any of them.

Disney: Gargoyles - I'm enjoying it again so far. It's been so long since I tried to watch any of it. I'm glad it's holding up.

Disney: X-Men - holy soap opera Cyclops! I forgot how over melodramatic everything is. How on earth was this a kids show back in the day? I'm only a few eps in, but I'm excited to revisit Rogue/Gambit and the Dark Phoenix story lines. Maybe I just connected with Wolverine because he too acts like a misunderstood 13 year old girl?

Podcast: The Magnus Archives I've finished the first 80 episodes which is the first two seasons because [personal profile] rydra_wong started shouting about in in their journal (honestly, I am so here for when people start shouting about things they love!) and I am a lemming. This is honestly the best summary of it which I've shortened here from one entry:

The Magnus Archives is a horror podcast that starts out disguised as a horror anthology: Jonathan Sims, newly-appointed head archivist of the Magnus Institute, is making audio recordings of statements in the archives given by people who've had strange/supernatural encounters.

Fair enough, you think: this is an obvious framework for a dude to read horror stories into a microphone with a spooky posh British voice. And they really are good standalone short stories!

... then you start realizing that they're not standalones (though they all work on that level too).

And it gradually turns out that there's a complex over-arching meta-narrative (plotted from the start as a five-season arc with a proper ending; season four just finished) and an ensemble cast. And it's fucking AMAZING and the character development and relationships are Kill. Ing. Me.

They have more info in this post and several others around the same time.

IMDB TV: I have very little idea what this actually is. I found the channel when I was surfing through the Amazon streaming app. It currently has seasons of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Fringe, and Leverage free with ads. The ads aren't long or terribly spliced so I don't mind them. Through the Amazon app at least you also have access to their x-ray feature for trivia and other info and that's one of my favorite things. I watched two eps of Fringe last night. I never made it all the way through last time, but I remember really enjoying the first several seasons.

TV: Rick and Morty So far so good with this season. I don't know that many of y'all watch this show. It def isn't for everybody, and that's before you factor in the obnoxious fans who hold Rick up like the perfect example of male intellectual dominion. Episode one clearly told the fascists and the lets-not-talk-about-politics-lets-just-have-fun-adventures groups to go fuck themselves and I liked it. The second episode which is technically about shy pooping ending up gut punching me in the feels at the end. Rick is a lonely asshole because he's been an selfish asshole who has lost sight of the fact life means anything when you can just jump through the multiverse and start over. He is the only one he can blame for his life. And yet. . . maybe he's trying to change? IDK, but here is the end scene if anyone is interested. He set up the trap for someone else who was using his toilet, and then things happened and he ends up sitting there.

I went to see Countdown today which is a movie that I saw no trailers for, never saw it marketed, and was just hoping it was the fun sort of bad. It was fun but it also scared the crap out of me. Several well done jumpscares, but they did the haunting in a way that will stick with me and might make me sleep with the lights on.

I think I'm done with my yuletide letter. It includes Rampage, Maleficent, 9-1-1, and The Rookie. So far no one has yelled at me over it, and I hope this continues.

There's still time to Trick or Treat me!

I'll be using dabblewriter.com for nanowrimo, though I have very little idea of what I'll be writing for my Definitely not a Buffy Rip Off. I'm hoping it surprises me. Prompt #3: Canon Recommendations

Life got you down?
We have just the tonic!
Relax, breathe deeply and close your eyes.
Let the calming effects of The Aviary work its magic on you.

So it didn't change my life (or maybe it did), but I did really enjoy it. I am so terrible at recommending and describing things it's embarrassing. But here's my attempt!

Tales from beyond the Pale: The Chambers Tapes featuring the smooth tones of Misha Collins (Castiel from Supernatural). This is 38 mins of subtle horror masquerading as a meditation tape released in November of 2015. I mean, you do really get half hypnotized by Dr. Chambers, the meditation part is so soothing, and so easy to imagine, that you get caught up in all the noises that when the twist comes, it makes so much sense but you also never thought it. The horror is not gross or graphic, we're talking similar to Night Vale (at least the first ten or so eps which is all i listened to) uneasiness with implications.

here's an interesting interview with the author.

1. Miss Bala -Gloria finds a power she never knew she had when she is drawn into a dangerous world of cross-border crime. Surviving will require all of her cunning, inventiveness, and strength. Based on the Spanish-language film.

Is it going to win any awards? Probably not. Is it action adventure with a female lead who's not ridiculous? Yes. Bonus points for Anthony Mackie, though he's probably only in it for like mins.

I liked this article which pretty much hits it, I'm just easy to please: Gina Rodriguez Thriller 'Miss Bala' Tries To Have Its Cake And Eat It Too

2. Happy Death Day 2U - Tree Gelbman discovers that dying over and over was surprisingly easier than the dangers that lie ahead.

The first one was objectively a good horror movie. This one was ridiculous, but still watchable. The plot is trying to explain why she got caught in the time loop in the first place, and it was a thousand 'I don't want this' from me. I still really like the character Tree, and the actress is energetic and empathetic. I like that she's the ultimate "I Got This" character.

Um, just skip the credits scene though, and then sacrifice a bucket of chicken in the hopes that no one is dumb enough to make a third one.

3. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World - When Hiccup discovers Toothless isn't the only Night Fury, he must seek "The Hidden World", a secret Dragon Utopia before a hired tyrant named Grimmel finds it first.

I really liked the first two movies, but it's been a looooooooooong time since I watched them. The group in the theater was a mix of kids, teenagers, and older type adults. The oldest group seemed to like it the best, and I didn't hear much of a peep out of the kids. The plot is heavy and sad, and about finding a female dragon and convincing her to give you the time of day. IDK, I didn't have much fun.

4. Fighting With My Family -A former wrestler and his family make a living performing at small venues around the country while his kids dream of joining World Wrestling Entertainment.

This is my winner for the month, even though it does have some super awkward parts. I was entertained, I liked the way Saraya/Paige grew up during training, and the other women vying for the Diva spot were also awesome. Some parts were just hilarious, and then the touching family parts broke it up, all crowned with glorious achievement!

Probably not something you have to see in theaters, but I think lots of people will find it entertaining.

In other wrestling news: Chris Hemsworth to play Hulk Hogan in a movie focused just on the wrestling parts of his life. Listen, I am all in for the handle bar mustache and the wrestling panties, okay?

The creatures were great and you eventually get real good looks at them. The family is adorable, and the movie spent the time showing us why we should cheer for them. I laughed, I cried, and the ending was strong. The addition of music to the soundtrack at times was perfect, the heartbeat pattern made me tense up any time the characters were scared. THE STORY MADE SENSE. Except for the pregnancy that was just stupid on their behalf.

I loved it. I'll buy it when it comes out.

However, lest anyone think that I am a horror snob, know that I also want to see Truth or Dare which looks like a ridiculous jump scare fest with unlikable kids.

Okay, so I've probably slept more in the last two days than I did in the last two weeks put together. I escaped Oktoberfest with a horrible sunburn, three splinters, and a broken pinky toe after losing ten pounds. I only managed to eat one side of potato salad, but I think I ate about a dozen schnitzel sandwiches. Me and roommate number 3 are still hoping for death, but hopefully we'll get our mojo back this week.

I have sucked hard in my Pick'em sheets for the last two weeks. Mostly, I randomly checked boxes, but I'm gonna get in the zone starting this week. If you wanted to join, do it, because you can still make up some ground! ESPN gives you ten college games to pick a week and you arrange them by how confident you are that you're right. This is our group and the password is: livejournal.

Did I mention that I went to see Don't Be Afraid of the Dark and I hated it? Katie Holmes was not good, and the movie made classic horror movie mistakes. However, it did inspire the plot I'm gonna write for my Teen Wolf Halloween story. It's gonna be scary, guys. Scary and awesome. : )

I'm behind on everything, so I'm very sorry for late comments that pop up in the next couple of days. I'm trying to write sequels and it's just not happening. I might go troll the kink meme for an easy prompt to pop out. Feel free to point me at something if you'd like. My brain still feels like mush.

Do I want to buy an iPhone? I have an upgrade with AT&T and even though I swore I wouldn't, I think the smart phones + GPS/Mapquest has won me over. Hopefully, I will be moving some time early next year, and I will then be completely lost in a new town.

Also, I was doing research for my very first ATC I plan to make. I love this movie.

The Pilgrimess

Maybe you just have one of those faces, but people just don't trust you. Whether or not you are what people say you are is irrelevant. It's just your lot in life. Sorry.

"The town rallied in a frenzy, cornering her in a farmhouse which they lit on fire, but moments later, she miraculously crawled out, still alive and without a single burn upon her skin. The astounded townsfolk sentenced her to a slow death in the stocks. There she stayed for weeks while children stoned her, women cursed her, and men spat on her."

You can take the quiz here. I couldn't get the coding to work, so I did it old school.
