I liked The Noel Diary on Netflix. Justin Hartley is more than adequate as a loner novelist with family baggage. Nice holiday tropes, and does have an instance of infidelity if that bothers you. )

I had a rough Friday. I left work early that morning, made a bunch of treats for my parents who were coming into town to have dinner and watch the Community Band Concert . . . (video below in case anyone has some sort of weird urge to watch a bunch of weirdos play decently. Twas the Night Before Christmas starts at 57:47 and it is so cheesy. I love it.) )

then after about three hours of sleep I was woken up to a mass freak out because my friend was missing and after friends and family organized, it turned out no one had heard from her since the 10th. Her sister found her checked into a hospital's behavioral unit. So, y'know, she knows when she needs help, but didn't want to worry anyone else.

Also the kittens got up on the counter and nibbled through the plastic into the orange cranberry cake I'd just made. However, comparatively, it was obviously not that big of a deal to me.

Last night was our work party, and it was the worst job I've done trying to organize it. I asked everyone to bring sides, and only one person told me they'd bring mashed potatoes, otherwise I got cheesecake, apple cider, chips and dip. So I panicked last min and made extra mac and cheese, and sauteed veggies just in case. Good thing because the mashed potatoes over slept, and at the last moment I made the young dude bring rolls. Aw well. The roast and bacon wrapped chicken legs were tasty. They voted to watch Catch Me if You Can which definitely has mins of holiday scenes, but it was a bust and only me and one guy made it to the end.

I'm glad my holiday commitments are over. I do have presents under the tree for the first time in years though since my parents didn't try to make me open them when I was upset over my friend temporarily being missing.

So I spent some time cleaning out the freezer, and I clearly had/have good intentions of eating the fish but little to no follow through. Alas for my liver enzymes.

After 15ish years of fear and anticipation, it finally happened. The Community Band f-ed up the Star Spangled Banner. It was glorious. The fear and desperation on the director's face is a thing not soon forgotten. I'm still not entirely sure what happened, but there were a couple of different tempos going on until about the middle when we all wisely decided to go with the percussion. I take very little credit as I always skip the first measure due to fear of fracking out before anyone else.

I enjoyed the Crooked Media folks doing a draft based on their ideas of the most patriotic songs. I laughed hard at the two sports nerds having to explain to the gay nerds what a snake draft is. They picked some good ones . . . and some odd ones. And Fanfare for the Common Man clearly wins.

Happy Black Widow month to those of you celebrating! I still haven't decided if I'll go see it, but like all MCU movies, I'll be so happy when it's finally out so I won't have to watch the trailer before EVERY SINGLE OTHER MOVIE I SEE.

Let's see if this'll work. . . Here is my community band playing a piece for our patriotic concert. It's usually my least favorite except for the 1812 Overture . . . which we didn't get to play this year. -> So, how did music celebrating Russia’s pushback against a foreign power become associated with America’s Fourth of July? It’s not even about the American War of 1812.

The answer has to do with cannons, Americans’ love of Tchaikovsky and its pop culture’s embrace of the "1812 Overture."

I also couldn't convince anyone else that we should skip the national anthem before every concert. I hate playing it.

Didn't work -> here is the link on Facebook I'm the back row on the right playing the silver trombone. I think you can see like from the nose up for a few seconds.

I've got no idea for [community profile] sunshine_challenge's first prompt - Hades. Any ideas what I should do?

Since we had our first rehearsal last night for the community band holiday concert last night, I now feel I can unashamedly start listening to my xmas playlists to start tidying them. However, we also had some high drama I had to get involved in which I feel strange about.

The players:
Jan - about grandma age, looks like a much shorter Jamie Lee Curtis from the last Halloween movie, poofy gray hair and all. She let me student teach with her 15 years ago when I was actually assigned to the football coach who had planning period first hour, and we've kept in touch through community band stuff ever since.

Dennis - not quite grandpa age, little quiet dude who I had thought was okay. He would talk to me if I started the conversation but otherwise kept to himself during practice/concerts. Also plays trombone.

My mom and Carl did some traveling this week. They passed through and dropped off a giant kennel for me in anticipation of my xmas puppy, before continuing down to visit my little brother for the occasion of the birth of his second child - named Kamden, which is not awful. I don't get to see my brothers much, and it usually doesn't bother me, but I've been thinking more about trying to get to know his kids better while they're little.

Then they came back up to spend Thurs night with me, unfortunately I had to work until 0400, so I was kinda lagging on Friday when I took them out to breakfast and then shopping around town. Fri night was the community band christmas concert. It's my favorite -> pretty music, usually easy enough to play, often get to play REALLY LOUD, and family comes to watch. Usually Dad and Jan come, but they didn't want to commingle with Mom and Carl, so they're planning to come down for a basketball game later. I like hanging out with Mom and Carl, but I did just spend a week with them in New Orleans, so I really missed the chance for a slightly less aggressive visit with Dad. Also I had to sleep with the temp set on 66 for two whole nights, a full 12 degrees hotter than normal. So hot.

Anyway, I'm enjoying having a clean house, and hopefully I'll be able to keep it clean and finish puppy-proofing it.

In somewhat related, but not entirely, news, these are truths I hold self-evident:

1. flush with the toilet seat down
2. if you must park on the curb, park on the curb in front of your own damn house
3. audience members in a concert where the band is recording live should not attempt to clap along with the beat
4. insulated lunch bags should not go in the refrigerator, it's redundant, gross, and takes up too much space

Finally, got the super great news that the measly 2.5% raise we were expecting in January is a no go because the state is broke and the university is more interested in athletics than the rest of us. I hate everything.

I saw The Omen. Not what I expected but still a good movie. One day I'll have Liev's babies.

I'm going to a bachelorette (how do you spell that?! OMG, I'm insane.) party tonight. Wish me luck.

I had a wierd livejournal dream which I'll have to post about later.

I'm just over four thousand words into some original work. It's a little terrifying.

Subject line is a quote from our Spirit (Basketball) Band director. I love the dirty-old-man act he puts on, because he's really not. Mostly.

Have a good weekend!

Last night, accompanied by my ex roommate who moved to hell, the girl down the street that doesn't talk above a whisper, a friend from high school, and the Boy Who Bruised My Heart, I went to see a DCI show. I think this is my fourth to go see, and finally, my favorite corps won, the Madison Scouts!

So, of course, I wanted to share the hotness that is boys wearing uniforms and bonding together for months on end and what I found surprised even me. Apparently the majority of their time is spent walking around half-naked and hugging (in the they couldn't show it on the Disney channel way). HERE

And a preview just in case you don't believe me.

And of course, the all-male-color guard led to inappropriate thoughts on my behalf, which in turn (logically, of course) led to me thinking about what the Star Wars universe would do with a drum corps. Anakin would be the drama queen saber leader, Obi-Wan would play the horn, Mace would play low brass, the Sith would comprise the drum line, and Yoda the director, would be.

Thus, this sillyness was born.

I saw you looking at me. )

We've been having a "retreat" this weekend for Tau Beta Sigma, and it's actually turned out far better then I thought it would. We're getting tons of new ideas for the candidate class this year, which as Membership Educator, I'm in charge of. We're also, getting closer together as Sisters, something I never would have imagined at the end of the spring semester. I even learned something about myself, as I analyzed how I reacted to people and ideas. My biggest sin isn't pride anymore, it's envy, and I really need to take some time and think about that.

My truck's battery died today. We went ten years on the original four year battery. I don't care what you say, I love Fords.

In fic news:

It's so hard to sit on these things and wait for the beta. Also, since I will be gone for the next week (going to St. Louis tomorrow on a trip with my mum) and I don't want any of you to forget about me, I've decided to post this first part. The second part is also finished and includes a scene with the kids that I giggled at all the way through, but it'll have to wait until I get back.

Well, leaving on a 10 hour trip for a four day ski trip tonight with the rest of my band, (only about 30 people, but trust me that's enough when they're band geeks!).
I don't know if I can make it without suffering major life-changing fic with drawl

Who's your Fellowship fella?

Crap. I'm a widow.

Awww, they're very mean to poor Boromir, I liked him best, so I don't care what they say!
