chase_acow: black and white wolf howling (random wolf)
I am 17/40 on my reading goal, so goodreads tells me I'm behind by 4. Gotta get to reading! Though I still maintain that when I finally finish Promised Land it should count as 4.

Camille Baker's debut novel Have We Met? - 'A mysterious dating app determined to match Corinne with her soulmate proves impossible to ignore, even while she navigates career uncertainty in a new city and a surprising romance.'

I really enjoyed the main character, and the author's writing style. It's fun and easy to get through. I liked the is it/isn't it magical realism of a mercurial non-deleting app with excellent side-eye on some of her decisions. I kinda wish there'd been no explanation at the end, but it was okay. The reveal is never as good as you want it to be. I'd definitely check out another when she writes one.

Charlie Adhara's Cry Wolf Book 5 in the Big Bad Wolf series. - 'When he’s dragged to an event by his family, Cooper braces for an awkward evening, but instead finds himself in the middle of an ugly feud between Park’s ex and a rebel pack leader. What was supposed to be a quick outing turns into a full-blown murder investigation after the pack leader ends up dead, Park’s ex goes missing, and Cooper and Park are sent a series of disturbing wedding gifts that are somehow connected to it all.'

I started this in Jan and the beginning didn't really click, and also I didn't want to finish it, because then it would be done? but once I opened it back up and actually got into the mystery I was all in and finished the last half in one sitting. This is not your normal tropes for werewolves and the world building is getting deep and really interesting. The set-up for the next book is getting big and awesome. The mystery in this one didn't feel as solvable by the reader as some of the others in the series, but I definitely called a few of the suspects right and I always feel good for me and the author when that happens!

My goal for tonight at work is to find a job to apply for. Good luck me!

Friday Five

1) What is the best book you've read?

But what does best even mean really? I readily acknowledge that I love terrible movies sometimes as long as they're entertaining. I don't know if I feel the same about books since it takes a lot more work to read a book than watch an hour and a half movie. ETA y'know, maybe the Mercy Thompson series would count, those books are like summer popcorn reading. Nothing special, but enjoyable characters doing entertaining things. I say this as someone who has reread the whole series so many times.

I'll say, The Call of the Wild by Jack London. It's got adventure, good puppies and evil puppies, existential questions about a dog's place in the grand scheme of things, and an ambiguous ending that will haunt you for life.

But don't watch the Harrison Ford movie. That is a terrible movie and it's crap.

2) What is the worst book you've read?

I couldn't think of anything, but Goodreads tells me I hated several books. The only one I still feel any kind of way about is The Silver Chair by C.S. Lewis in the Chronicles of Narnia. Terrible characters, terrible plot, I hated it so much. Now I have my own issues with Lewis, but this is still the worst book in the series.

3) What is a favorite book from childhood?

The first thing that came to mind was Julie of the Wolves so between that and Call, you can tell what kind of kid I was.

4) What is a favorite book from adulthood?

Kurt Vonnegut is my favorite read-when-I-was-an-adult author - and probably Sirens of Titan but I've enjoyed all that I've read so far. They're weird and it usually takes a reread to really settle in.

5) What is a book you've read a number of times?

I will always love Pigs Don't Fly by Mary Brown. Yet another animal story, but found family, adventure, travel, a love story that is deep, and a hell of a cliff hanger all make me so pleased to read the familiar words.

So, on my night off, five people got fired at the Evil Empire. Yes, three of them were cashiers. This means that Friday night with the unveiling of HP7 there will be a grand total of three (count 'em three) cashiers working.

Sigh.

I'm going off line until I finish the book and then pass out to catch up on sleep. So Sunday or Monday perhaps.

*points to icon* I didn't even watch that movie (can't even remember the name now) but I just thought that was hilarious.

1. So I put the ad in the paper to try and find new renters for my house. Lots of people called but no one came out to see it. It was rainy, but this might be a bad, bad thing.

2. Speaking of rain, I drove through a good two foot high flood of water to get to internet tonight. It was not fun, very scary, and no good. Thankfully I did not have a heart attack and the car appears to be fine. The things I do to keep up with you people... : )

Yet it is still raining, so I might be stranded in town. Woe!

3. I've decided if I ever get another dog, I'm going to name her McClane and refer to her as a he. I will also teach 'him' tricks by cursing. For example 'god damn it' will get McClane to rollover and 'shit' will get a handshake. I'm already very impressed with myself even if I never get another dog.

4. Don't think badly of me, but I'm just now beginning to catch up with the SGA eps I've missed. From the first season and the ending of the third season. I think it's neat to see these episodes together for the first time. I can easily see how the characters have grown and changed and completely stayed the same.

I finally saw John ride off into the sunset ala The Siege on Rodney's nuke and how he and Rodney interacted. Then I turned around and watched John try to ride a moonbase free of the atmosphere in The Ark and listen to Rodney pleading with him not to do it. Sometimes I forget how much I really do love the show even through its faults, and that there is more to fandom than fic.

I wish I could write meta, because I think those two eps together would be a good topic. Maybe someone has already done it? *looks hopefully for a link*

2b. Oh look it's stopped raining and I've had this post open for the last three hours. Perhaps the IHOP employees are beginning to wonder over my social life.

5. I think I'm in the process of signing up for [livejournal.com profile] sg_flyboys. I think I have an addiction and people need to stop having cool challenges, dangit.

HP House meme thing. I'm a Slytherin because I like football. Very scientific. )

Um, I saw it?

I believe that I'm ambivalent to it. It was there and I neither squeed (out loud) or booed.

I can't wait for the book to come out next week. I need to know how it ends!

Speaking of ending, Cameron Mitchell and the Unlikely Boyfriend ends tomorrow because I finally have the night off.

I definitely did a face bust in my front yard last night when I was going back to work from lunch. Just swishing along, happy I was so awake at 3am when BAM crack my shin into the lawnmower and crashed right over it into the newly hardened mud. Ouch. I am so sore today, and working tonight will not be fun.

Speaking of work, I'm supposed to go in for my last night July 20th. You know, the day that becomes July 21st at the stroke of midnight? Yeah, they're already talking Harry Potter plans, they think they have this great system that will encourage people to shop instead of waiting by the cash registers in a mob.

Wristbands.

Yes, Wal-Mart will distribute "House" wristbands and call people up starting with Gryffindor and going down to Hufflepuff. Yeah, that's not going to clusterfuck. Special. I've never been to any kind of midnight release, and I can't stop imagining some idiot yelling spoilers and then getting beaten to death by shopping bags.

Luckily for me, I'm having a root canal done that morning (never thought I'd say that). So at the slightest anxiety attack at too many people/too much insanity I have the perfect excuse to run away.

Started at 10:50am and finished at 8:38.

First reaction: huh
Second reaction: huh
Third reaction: OMGLOVE!

Roommate's reaction: (looking at me) You're so dumb.

I read the book, beginning to end, by stopping after each chapter and jotting down a note to myself. I don't try to dissect anything I read or watch, I rather like just having it bubbling in my head for awhile with the symbolism all still attached. That said, I cannot wait for people more intellectual and amusing then I am to rip this book apart and tell me what they think it means.

Title: Paths we tread
Author: Jessifer
Summery: Sirius centered. Sirius/Remus. Set sometime during Order of the Phoenix
Rating: PG
Notes: This story jumped quickly out of my head, due I think in part to the past several days of limited contact with any kind of world outside my door. My inner sadist wants to set this the weekend before the Ministry Incident. Alas.

Midway in our journey, I went astray. . . )
