chase_acow: Supernatural Dean holding gun "Yippie kay yay motherfucker" (spn d yippie)
I can't say that Deadpool and Wolverine was a good movie, but I was entertained! Except for that dog licking people's mouths and nearly making me puke. I wish there had been more comedy about this particular Logan being the worst - seems to me he just got unlucky and it could have happened to anybody. Now if he were a vegetarian or something . . . that would be anti-Wolverine. I think 2 is going to be my favorite in this trilogy.

I hadn't heard anything about the movie Strange Darling with the tag line Nothing is what it seems when a twisted one-night stand spirals into a serial killer's vicious murder spree. The short trailer makes it clear that it's one of those artsy attempts (the pretentious level is in the eye of the beholder) and tells you that you need to go in blind.

so of course it used one of my deal-breakers for story structure. )

I had my birthday on the 11th. It was fine. I was still stuck on nights for two more shifts so it wasn't the greatest. But I am free now and enjoying the sun.

August and my birthday especially has been a good chance to evaluate some of my yearly goals. I'm never going to make the 200k word goal for GYWO and it irritates me even more that this goal is called "basic" as if it's super easy. So, I thought, I'm just going to try to write a little every day. Ten words is fine! I haven't even managed that the last couple of weeks. Aw well. Here's hoping for September!

Spotify decided to punish my recent listening history by putting this bluegrass cover of Milkshake into my Discovery playlist. My ears bled. I am now listening to playlists that with hopefully exorcise the algorithm.

Baseball:
The Phillies lost 18-3 to the not-so-hapless Oakland As yesterday. I'm gonna watch/listen the replay later while I do some cleaning around the house mostly because I want to know if the announcers can keep it together. They're pretty entertaining weirdos normally, but I think it's a good judge of character to watch a fan watch their team lay an egg. And because I want to see the vibes guy - Garrett Stubbs, our back up catcher, pitch the ninth ending as they just try to escape.

Cats:
I am taking my Phillie to her new home with my old roommate in the morning! And it's none too soon. I think my big cat is getting stressed and/or over-crowded, he's had moments being too rough while playing with the other long timers, and stalked Phillie to trap her under the table before I realized what was going on. Phillie has really bloomed into a playful and affectionate cat, I hope she settles into the new place okay.

Something bothering me:
I don't like punching down. I think nitpicking on typos, word mix-ups, and silly mistakes in fan-fic is punching down. We create because we love/hate/want-to-fix the source and hope that someone else will enjoy what we do. Seeing someone being mean about it is kinda a morale buster. It's not funny or helpful.

After massively failing my word count goal for [community profile] getyourwordsout from last year, I signed up for the habit side again with the goal of writing 240 days this year. I decided any day in Jan with over 100 words would count, and I managed 26 days for 10,919 words. So in Feb, I'll count any day I do more than 200, and started off with the hopes to increase the average words. Unfortunately, I have been so exhausted and itchy that I don't think I'm going to get much of a rise. Oh well, maybe next month.

I haven't finished an exchange in forever. I defaulted on Yuletide and FFFX, I just couldn't get it going for either of the small fandoms I thought I was excited about. Nobody's really requesting Sam/Bucky or Top Gun where I see it, so I guess, I'll just hang around.

Definitely not going to finish the Sam/Bucky psychic wolf fic for Lupercalia, but maybe by the end of the month after I flip to day shift.

I made a side tumblr to reblog all the things that might one day come in handy while writing. General advice and fantasy/sci-fi stuff mostly. It's chaseawritingpost

Speaking of tumblr, I really enjoyed this post about hanahaki disease and how a few tweaks can change the trope so much.

Offline with Jon Favreau has become another favorite podcast. He's just kind of a joyful voice even when the news is bad. I mean as a kid his favorite dinosaur was the brontosaurus because he didn't like carnivore conflict. He's had some really interesting conversations with comedians, journalists, and scientists.

I really enjoyed this episode with Dr Anna Lembke - Dr. Anna Lembke, Stanford Psychiatrist and author of “Dopamine Nation,” joins Jon to talk how smartphones, social media, and the internet have fundamentally changed the way our brains process pleasure. Making the case that phones are similarly addictive to alcohol, tobacco, and drugs, she teaches Jon how we can reset our brains to have a healthier relationship with our phones and the world around us.

Writing wise, I think the big word count goal for [community profile] getyourwordsout is having the opposite than desired effect on my writing/finishing habits. I'm behind, but not so much that I couldn't catch up, but I'm feeling so resistant to writing because I'm such an instant editor and I haven't yet found a way to count all the words I write without subtracting the words I delete. I write a lot of things I then need to delete for clarity or an active voice and it feels like wasted time? Even though I know it's not. I'd happily take any thoughts/ideas/comments about this issue of mine.
chase_acow: spiderverse Peter with sweatpants (spider pants)
I got mail from [personal profile] dine I enjoyed the update quite a bit! If you don't have them as part of your circle, you're missing out on entertainment and great recs. : )

I made egg sandwiches for breakfast, both eggs were double yolked monstrosities. Creepy yet delicious. I'm making a lasagna now, it's my first attempt and I hope it goes well because I've been craving it for a couple of weeks now. I miss Fazoli's, it was a great fast food Italian option. The Everyplates meal kits have really upped my confidence in the kitchen. Is it false confidence? probably. Do I still have all my fingers? so far.

OTOH - I've gotten sucked into Epicurious' Basic Skills Challenge which takes 50 people gives them ALL the kitchen gadgets and then asks them to do something like core and peel an apple (spoiler alert, someone tries to use a meat tenderizer mallet and I absolutely lost all my shit) or separate an egg (which one man manages to technically do in the most wrong way possible) and then an expert shows you how to do it the right way. So I also see that I'm clearly not the worst in the kitchen.

I'm reading The Testaments right now and I'm enjoying it now that I checked the wiki page and know there are actually three narrators. I'm dim sometimes. I enjoyed hating the The Handmaid's Tale which I read a couple of years ago. It's just infuriating, and even though obviously everyone jumped on the bandwagon because of the current state of politics in so many places, I probably should have waited for a better time to read it. But since I'd already done it to myself, I figured I might as well read the sequel and see what happens. I tried to watch the Hulu series despite my distaste for Elizabeth Moss, but didn't make it out of season 1.

While reading, I got an idea for a AU Hydra rises/Winter Soldier army fic for Sam/Bucky. It glances the tropes for a slavery fic, but also lets me stage a coup and do some other things with the Avengers characters. Not sure it'll ever see the light of day. Sam fans have to deal with the short end of the stick a lot when it comes to race and fandom, and I don't want to add to that. But I wrote a real easy 1,500 words last night at work and I like a lot of the sex/vulnerability/trust/consent/political issues involved. I mean, sure I could have been writing my assignment for [community profile] idproquo but y'know, why do what you're supposed to?

- so my goal for this is to let loose and write fast and weird on treats/exchanges I'm not real sure about but want to try. I want to write more treats for exchanges but I feel paralyzed about putting it on my main account. I don't want to annoy anyone with weird, kinky or very short bits. During [community profile] snowflake_challenge a lot of people fondly remembering comment communities and fests, but I think treats for exchanges are the closest we get a lot of the time. I've written some things I've been really proud of fast and loose for comment!fics but I've also failed sometimes. I want to feel comfortable enough to take that chance and I think an off-brand AO3 handle might help. We'll see anyway.

Over on [community profile] winterfalcon I made this post about Clint Barton's new series Hawkeye: Freefall I posted some panels so even if you're not there for the added Sam and Bucky shenanigans, you can check out Clint and his new fail!life. I love the art!

Also on [community profile] winterfalcon and for [community profile] snowflake_challenge, I recced three newish Sam/Bucky fics which you can find here. One's high on weed, the other aliens made them do it, and the last is technically an A/B/O warlord au, but most of the fic is Bucky figuring out his life.

So, while I am trying to resuscitate that community are there any others y'all in particular would like to see more active? I'm trying to get serious about saving some cash, so I've been looking through [community profile] actyourwage which is still a great idea, but the community couldn't keep going. I might try posting there for a while too see if anyone'll start a conversation.

The Emotional Craft of Fiction: How to Write the Story Beneath the Surface by Donals Maass

My friend at work finished his first draft of a novel, and I am slightly jealous. I've only ever finished the one thing a million years ago. I'm not saying it's good, but it has a beginning, middle, and engaging end, and most importantly, like I said, a finished thing. But we've been trading books back and forth, he lent me this one while he took a couple of mine.

I like Donald Maass. I met him once at a conference and he was a cool, helpful dude. I'm not finished with the book yet, but any amount is honestly useful. I tried to use a few tips in my Sam Wilson Birthday Bang and honestly I thought it helped. I might get the kindle version once I finish.

My favorite exercise was the Third-Level Emotions:
"That's how it works. Be obvious and tell readers what to feel, and they won't feel it. Light an unexpected match, though, and readers will ignite their own feelings, which may well prove to be the ones that are primary and obvious. Third-level emotions. That's the effective way of telling." p23

So in a scene, as the writer you know the obvious emotion, but what else is there? And beyond that, what's the third emotion? Tap into that, and the previous two are understood, but not spelled out. The audience knows.

Maass' other book Writing the Break out Novel and the Workbook are the best things on writing I have ever read.

I love the theme for this year's nanowrimo! It's so pretty. I bought a mug with ^that design . . .
but the poster is really good too! )

Is anyone planning on doing nanowrimo this year? Waffling? I hadn't given it a lot of thought, but then an idea floated up from the media soup part of my brain and I think it's doable. I have finally found my angle on a Buffy ripoff - adult mentor centered! All the fun of teenage drama, none of the angst to slog through in a pov. I'm going to think about it for a bit longer, and then I might ask for a bit of crowd sourcing.

Their new website is better, but it did import thing a little weird for me, but here I am if anyone wants to be buddies. I am currently buddyless.

their prep 101 page is here
Develop a Story Idea (September 9-13)
Create Complex Characters (September 16-20)
Construct a Detailed Plot or Outline (September 23-27)
Build a Strong World (September 30 – October 4)
Organize Your Life for Writing! (October 7-11)
Find and Manage Your Time (October 14-18)
And the entire resource/handbook with links is here.

And I always look through their offers page to see if any new app/resource is offering an extended new trial, or discounts. I used Dabble last year (or maybe some other year, my life is seriously beginning to blur) which auto submits your word count. It'll be free for the month of november, and then if you liked it well enough get a 20 or 50% discount.

I need to find something different to use. Google docs is just . . . getting on my nerves and it's not as helpful as what I think I need to really push me. I would happily take any suggestions! I just need something with an online version, so scrivener is out.

So, last year while out and about, I met a wonderful lady, Candace Havens. She's written romance, and supernatural romance/chick lit while keeping a day job as an entertainment journalist. Her twitter is full of bits and pieces or entertaining or worthwhile bits for media or writing.

When I met her, she was super nice, supportive, and encouraging. I believe she really has the writing stones to help people figure out their own particular quirks and road blocks. She maintains a free yahoo group dedicated to writers trying to get into the business. I joined a bit back and dug through the archives finding several helpful topics. At the beginning of the month, she announced that she would be hosting a six week comprehensive writing course starting January 25th.

"Comprehensive Writing Course: Level 1

This is a six-week comprehensive writing course that takes students through the creative process, to writing, revising and polishing, so that the final book is ready to shop to agents and editors. It is designed to be motivational as well as educational and students will be working with a multi-published author one-on-one. Space is limited so sign up now. The cost is $100.

Here's another blurb from the Dallas area where she lives -> Are You Serious About Getting Published?

This is the link for her workshop page, both the free and comprehensive. I thought I'd see if anyone else was interested and maybe we could cheerlead each other a little bit. Let me know what you think of her.

Okay, so what is with all the epilogues in the Big Bangs this year? In a couple I've seen they tend to start a second after the last part ended and don't actually round any of the story up. They're not stylistically different from the rest of the piece either.

Is there a point besides the author trying to be "literary" or something? Which I find ironic because most of the agents and publishing sites I've been looking at seem to gag at the mere sight of a prologue or epilogue.

I don't have enough time or desire to read everything posted. Seeing 1) twice as many LJ posts as necessary for the word count and/or 2) an epilogue makes me awful leary and more likely to pass on reading a story. That's just my two cents though, and I'm sure that other people feel the exact opposite. I just wondered what other people thought about it.

I'm going back to my big bang as quick as I finish up my remix assignment today. I'm kinda looking forward to it being over.

I'm looking forward to [personal profile] oxoniensis's porn battle. I've looked through some of the prompts and I think that there will definitely be some that'll force me to write some dirt. : )

I'm getting the feeling that I simultaneous bit off more than I can chew and didn't come up with a big enough scope for my Big Bang. There are still a couple more things that I need to add and then it will be a matter of beating it into submission . . . making it readable . . . editing. It's already 39 thousand words and when I edit, it invariably means that I have to add stuff so that it makes sense. : ( Wonderful art though, I can at least promise that y'all will enjoy that part. : )

I put it aside for a little bit to work on the Dark Angel/Gilmore Girls crossover I started over a year ago. It's a little more than 8k right now and I think it'll end up being twice as long. For some reason the boys want to have lots of sex, and I'm going to do my civic duty and not stand in their way.

1. Finished draft around 30,000 words.
2. Better transitions between sections without becoming episodic.

Today was the close off for writers in [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang and I thought maybe I ought to start trying to organize myself. There are now three months until a completed 20,000 word draft is due, and I have three possible ideas that I cannot choose from. There might be a little flailing as I try to write and pick from two J2 and one SPN plots and I use the word "plot" very loosely. I might end up writing all three at the beginning and see which centers itself the best.

I'm also going to try to go about this in a more specific fashion than randomly slapping words on the page, which is what I usually do. I might even try to figure out the elusive usages of punctuation. So, expect some general resources links too as I try to figure out the "craft" part of writing. I'll cut everything that has to do with my specific fics, so if you don't want to spoil yourself for what I'm doing you don't have to, but you can see everything else.

Okay. I just had a very depressed week even through nothing out of the ordinary happened.

I talked to my mom Sunday night until I told her my phone was dying and it cut out. No one ever calls me so I didn't bother to charge it until Monday night. Tuesday morning, the substitute auto call woke me up at 5:30am so I put it on silent and basically forgot about it. Imagine my surprise when a freakin' cop bangs on my door, scares me to death, but politely asks me to give my mom a call so she'll stop pestering every single police office on campus and in town. Turns out she called my stepmom, my stepdad, my brother, two of my closest friends and was searching for my professor's number if I hadn't called her back by Thursday afternoon.

I was irritated while also slightly amused. I mean really. I'm 25. I think I should be able to go a week without calling in, right? ETA: Okay, so I had ten voice messages that I hadn't heard, but she didn't gent my little brother to email me - that would have had a reply in like an hour. She didn't even want anything, just worrying over nothing.

I really liked the last two eps of SPN. I'll try to catch up Sat/Sun with polls. I'm really loving this series, and I hope everyone who abandoned it last year will give it another chance.

[livejournal.com profile] thady if I don't email you by next week, please take out a hit on me and I'll pay you back in my will. I am entirely sucking at everything lately.

Also, since it is Halloween, I did the scariest thing I could think of. I sent my first query letter to an agent in regards to a book. A YA book I've finished, clocking in at 62,758 words. And yeah, odds are I'll win the lottery without buying a ticket before I get published, but . . . I did it, yeah? \0/
