If you . . .
1. had a restaurant, what kind of food would it serve?

I would have a cheese bar with some excellent puny name I will definitely think of later. But I'm talking charcuterie, grilled cheese (and soup), mac and cheese, and fresh baked bread that makes the place smell AMAZING.

2. owned a small store, what kind of merchandise would you sell?
Colored glass sculptures like little knickknacks and big garden statements, and sun-catchers (with wind chimes for the outside ones) and rose flavored candy (I just like it, okay?).

3. wrote a book, what genre or topic would it be?
Gay, magical realism, modern fantasy. It's got to be funny with snappy dialog and characters that briefly get in their own way on the bumpy road to love and victory.

4. gave lessons/ran a school, what would you teach?
How to befriend cats! I mean, I've watched every episode of My Cat From Hell so I'm basically an expert.

5. produced an album, what kind of music would it be?
Folk Rock Americana. Something with banjos and harmonicas, and a unique voice that auto tune can not touch. It'll make you think of sparks off a bonfire, the smell of slightly burnt caramel, and the feeling of wind blowing into your face off a body of water.

I just switched internet from suddenlink/optimum to AT&T fiber, and so far so good! It's faster so that I can finally stream games from playstation plus, and it's gonna be cheaper. I guess we'll se about when/if they decide to start jacking the price up. I just hate suddenlink so much, they had the worst customer service, and everyone has warned me that they'll start calling/texting/emailing to try to get me to sign back up with them. I look forward to being politely hateful to any of them who don't get a clue real quick.

Friday Five
1. What are your top 5 favorite foods?
bacon wrapped chicken legs
chicken and noodles (egg noodles - not brothy)
sushi - salmon, cream cheese, avocado
steak (medium) and baked potato
supreme pizza

2. Is there something similar between them?
Everything except the sushi I got from my parents and have good memories associated with grilling outside, or getting the cheapest brand of pizza and learning to love it.

3. Can you cook them yourself?
Despite my attempts to learn from the internet, I still can't cook a steak. I haven't tried to learn sushi. And making my own supreme pizza seems like a lot more trouble than getting it frozen at the store or hot and ready at Little Caesars. But I can rock that chicken!

4. Pick one, and tell us why it is so special.
My mom made that chicken and noodles. When she did it, it was An Effort. With boiling and seasoning the chicken, and taking that water for the noodles and then adding them together. I tried that a couple of times, and it never tasted right and took too long. Several years ago, one of my co-workers asked me why I didn't just use store bought chicken broth and rotisserie chicken. Let me tell you. Wow. It still reminds me of my mom, but I get to do it my way and it is so tasty. I just made some last week and added bacon. Success.

5. Have you eaten your recommended servings of 2 fruit and 5 vegetables today?
It's still early. I'm working on my first glass of water. Since it's a game day, I'm not holding my breath either. I'm not actually working the game, but I intend to get one of my favorite supreme pizzas on my in to work.

Friday Five

1) What is the best book you've read?

But what does best even mean really? I readily acknowledge that I love terrible movies sometimes as long as they're entertaining. I don't know if I feel the same about books since it takes a lot more work to read a book than watch an hour and a half movie. ETA y'know, maybe the Mercy Thompson series would count, those books are like summer popcorn reading. Nothing special, but enjoyable characters doing entertaining things. I say this as someone who has reread the whole series so many times.

I'll say, The Call of the Wild by Jack London. It's got adventure, good puppies and evil puppies, existential questions about a dog's place in the grand scheme of things, and an ambiguous ending that will haunt you for life.

But don't watch the Harrison Ford movie. That is a terrible movie and it's crap.

2) What is the worst book you've read?

I couldn't think of anything, but Goodreads tells me I hated several books. The only one I still feel any kind of way about is The Silver Chair by C.S. Lewis in the Chronicles of Narnia. Terrible characters, terrible plot, I hated it so much. Now I have my own issues with Lewis, but this is still the worst book in the series.

3) What is a favorite book from childhood?

The first thing that came to mind was Julie of the Wolves so between that and Call, you can tell what kind of kid I was.

4) What is a favorite book from adulthood?

Kurt Vonnegut is my favorite read-when-I-was-an-adult author - and probably Sirens of Titan but I've enjoyed all that I've read so far. They're weird and it usually takes a reread to really settle in.

5) What is a book you've read a number of times?

I will always love Pigs Don't Fly by Mary Brown. Yet another animal story, but found family, adventure, travel, a love story that is deep, and a hell of a cliff hanger all make me so pleased to read the familiar words.

Challenge #1: In your own space, introduce yourself!

Howdy! I usually enjoy Snowflake, so we'll see how this year goes. Of course, seeing how this year goes is pretty much my default for most questions I pose lately. Should I focus on selling my house and moving somewhere better -> distinct seasons, better government, more stuff to do? who knows. Should I let my doctor put me on a new medication? I'm guessing no, but still, what fresh horrors will this March bring?

But, most importantly, back to me. I need a haircut, and to dye my gray hair. My glasses are great, one lens is for near sightedness and the other is for far sightedness, so one eye always looks bigger than the other. My favorite hoodie is gray and orange. I have a big dog and a little dog, a friendly cat and a slightly feral cat. I hate my very secure, well paying, shift work job, but I'm good at it and every once or a while I get to help someone.

I'm currently watching season two of Star Trek Discovery for the first time and enjoying it. I really liked Bridgerton and Mandalorian which I just watched last week. Not a fan of WW84. I'm so excited for Falcon and Winter Soldier. I listen to Pod Save America and several other Crooked podcasts. I'm excited to finish up The Magnus Archives.

While I'm watching these weirdos, I'm doing a jigsaw puzzle: Dragon Age: Cast of Thousands

The 12hr night shifts are not all I'd been hoping they could be. I've been sleeping terribly the last two weeks. I read/listen to the news too much . . . it has not helped improve my mood. My fuzzy nihilism has swan dived into just nihilism. This is fine.

I'm nearly finished hate watching Once Upon A Time it's still terrible. Zelena/Rebecca Mader is the worst she should be put in bad actress jail. This last season of adult Henry and the new curse is ridiculous. However, Tiana/Mekia Cox is delightful. I really like her and her character currently on The Rookie.

one of the best videos I've seen in a while. It had us all making noises at work the other night.

I saw a lot of people doing this one, but I only decided to join and copy/pasted from [personal profile] tabaqui! So I'm going to catch up now, and not even try to pretend that I'll manage to do one a day for the rest of the month. : )

1. Nobody really likes to be the victim of cruel hoax, but how do you feel about good-natured pranks that don’t cause harm? - I enjoy making myself look foolish to get a laugh. I'm a story teller, there is often exaggeration that I usually fess up to at the end. I don't really remember many pranks happening once I got out of college. But college kids are the worst, they clearly shouldn't prank. I wouldn't mind being the victim, and then getting revenge, but there would be a really small pool of people I'd be willing to hit first.

2 It’s Peanut Butter and Jelly day! What’s your favorite flavor of jelly or jam? - Raspberry (even with the tiny seeds) or if we're talking those little single serve packets at restaurants, the mixed berry is the clear best.

3 What’s one thing that you can do better than anyone you know? - I've somehow become the answerer of dog training questions among my group. I did years in 4H and went to state contests, I watched It's Me or the Dog with Victoria Stilwell, and have always thought Cesar Millan was ridiculous. 'Wait' is the absolute best thing you can teach your dog. Wait to eat, wait to go through doors, wait to jump out of cars etc. Now Dasher, my current dog, has some issues but I take full blame. This was my first dog without anyone else being involved and I think he's a little too attached. We're getting along better now, and he hasn't eaten any more couch cushions!

4 What picture is the wallpaper on the device you’re using right now? - I do the rotating thing so there's a lot of Sam and Bucky, paintings of cats, funny things, older fandoms and random pics that make me happy. Currently it is this gem. I'm still mad at work, I still want out, but with the state of things right now, I'm glad I'm still there . . . I guess.

[personal profile] dine gave me:

salmon - my dad was color blind, he's actually all blind at this point, but when I was in high school he had his Dad Chair TM this recliner he covered with a bright blue/yellow falsa blanket. For years he sat in that recliner defending it to everyone who naysayed. He got remarried and the chair was vetoed to make the move, since a pink chair wouldn't match anything else they were bringing/buying. So dad calls me and demands to know why I never told him he was sitting in a pink chair. I answered, well, it's really more salmon than pink and that mollified him a bit. It was pink, and the blue/yellow was an awful addition. I just thought he liked it!

peanuts - my grandma loved the circus peanut candy, and it was our secret snack for years. She didn't age in a pleasant way, but it's still a nice memory when I'm avoiding her for other reasons.

sand castles - zoo books and the movie Jaws gave me an incredibly unrealistic fear of sharks within the first three feet of water. So I never made sand castles, and I cried both times mom tried to vacation to Galveston. I think they're neat though, I like looking at the pics from competitions. Also there's one in the movie Baywatch and I can't unhear Dwayne Johnson saying 'front bump'

[profile] sjnt gave me:

polaroids - my grandma couldn't stand having her picture taken and she instilled that into my mom. So we didn't really have much of a progression of camera technology in the house. Never had a polaroid, but in high school/college i loved disposable cameras and quickly figured out if i was taking the pics I didn't have to be in the pics. I like the way polaroids and I would have loved to get into that hobby.

canals - somehow I thought they were romantic? not in the sexy way, but in the other way. and then in high school we had to watch a documentary on the Panama Canals and they're just these mechanical locks. so not romantic, but intricate. Needful for human ingenuity, but now i wonder what they do to the animal/plant system.

RVs - I like the idea of them, that you can pick up and move and see things and not need to play the game to make sure the neighbors don't get upset over the length of your grass or the placement of your trash can. however, I'm afraid of driving one. Maybe a small one? On day, when I'm running from the government.

[personal profile] yhlee

1. Dice. - I think I'd be a dice snob given the chance. I like the pretty sets that match a character, but I've never actually gotten through a character sheet so my bank account is still secure. However, I am fascinated that dice have been around for all of recorded history. One way or another humans have been tossing these suckers, winning and losing and laughing for so long.

2. Birdsong. - oh man, why do they have to start screeching so early in the morning? I like trying to mimic some of the sounds but I'm not a good whistler. Now I wonder if they're like cats, do they actually make the noises at each other for a reason, or are they just being assholes to us?

3. Maple syrup. - I wish it was what I thought it was? Like I was raised on the fake stuff, so I always had this idea that real maple syrup much be so much better - thicker, sweeter, something magical. I really like the episode of Battle Creek where they have to investigate counterfeit maple syrup. I think I have some vanilla infused small batch in the fridge.

My answer:

27. You're brain is fully formed, and you've still got all the promise and potential of strength and health. You'd be able to do a bit to change your appearance older or younger, and could reasonably date up or down. I like faces that have grown into themselves more than doe-eyed youth.

For [personal profile] dine TOP 5: ice cream flavors

1. Pistachio Pistachio by Ben and Jerry
It’s like a sweet vanilla cream ice cream with whole pistachios mixed in. I really like that it’s not overpowering, and I love actual pistachio nuts. My dad always got pistachio at Braums, but it was a green pistachio ice cream with bits of almond, and I didn't dig it.

2. Mint Chocolate Chip by Blue Bell
It’s so green! The ice cream is delicious, and I defy them labeling them as chips. Those are giant chocolate flakes mixed in and it is the perfect ratio.

3. Rocky Road
When I was a kid, this was the only ice cream I’d get when we went to Braums because I loved the chocolate ice cream, and I liked sticking my face on the scoop and sucking the actual marshmallow out. However, also as a child, I would not eat the walnuts, so I’d spit them out or collect them in a napkin for disposal later when they would inevitably actually end up spilled all over the floorboard of the car and smushed under my feet.

4. Amaretto ice cream with crunched up brownie
I used to get these all the time at Marble Slab when I was walking home from grad school. It’s not an in your face flavor palette, but I loved the creaminess of the ice cream and when I’d find a brownie chunk.

5. space junkie by Little Man Ice Cream in Arvada, CO
It’s a raspberry ice cream with brownies and marshmallows swirls and it was delicious. I only went there once, but it’s such a neat location with really unique flavors just in the middle of this trendy neighborhood. It was delicious and I wish everyone had a place like this.

2. When did you create your LJ, and what brought you here? How did you get your username? Has it changed?

Oh man, I know I had a livejournal in 2002, but for the life of me, I can't remember what it was called. I changed to chase_acow years ago and I've been super happy with it. It's from the song 'The Farmer and the Cowman' from Oklahoma ->

The farmer and the cowman should be friends.
Oh, the farmer and the cowman should be friends.
One man likes to push a plough, the other likes to chase a cow,
But that's no reason why they cain't be friends.

and because my team is the Cowboys (the ones in orange, not blue and silver). Something about it just makes me happy and it's me, right there in a couple of words. : )

I created my DW on 4/8/09 because I wanted a safe place, and LJ did not seem to be that
My current incarnation of LJ was created on 3/10/05, but I know there were at least two others first.

I came for the fic, I wanted to write fic and share it. Along the way, I'd like to think that I did make some friends, though I seem to have lost most of them now. Maybe one day I'll start posting enough to really interact with people again. I doubt it though, it's so hard now that I'm working twelve hour shifts 8pm to 8am. There's no time for anything!

Donuts: Because really, I love my occasional forays to Krispy Kreme. It's the raspberry filled, powdered sugar ones that do me in every time. Though, I never say 'no' to a chocolate covered one either.

Dreams: I'm one of those people that always remember my dreams. Sometimes it's not so much fun when I wake up from a nightmare and am too scared to poke a toe out from under my blanket, but most of the time it's worth it. I love the dreams where I can fly, and where I spend time with friends that I don't actually get to hang out with in 'real life'.

Dragons: I love dragons. Jeremy Thatcher: Dragon Hatcher was one of my favorite books growing up, and I'll give just about any story a chance if it has dragons in it.

Dynamics: Band geek alert, but seriously, without dynamics life would be so boring! It's the differences between sounds, ideas, and people (etc) that make life interesting enough for me to roll out of bed every morning. Of course, playing really fracking loud is fun too.

Dangly Things: I think I might have been a cat in a past life, because anything that dangles can grab my attention just about as quickly as Cameron in a towel (a towel with strings hanging down).

Daniel Jackson: To quote my own quote of Cameron: "Well, duh."

Danger: I like a good adrenaline rush just as much as the next adventure junkie! I white water raft down class four rivers, I bungee jump, I camp/backpack by myself. I like to go to fast and not wear my seat belt.

Due South: I gotta have my Mountie love. This show was so great, funny and not built around vulgarity and embarrassing situations. It had real chemistry between the stars, who were all fabulous actors. Plus Paul Gross and CKR are pretty dang hot.

DC Comics: I grew up on comics and their ripped off cartoons. My older brother wouldn't let me read his stash which meant that I would just sneak in and get them once he was gone. The mythology and story telling is just wonderful. In thousands of years beings will look back on these stories and try to get a handle on what makes us tick. Boy, are they going to be confused!

Dryers: Because I ask you, what's better then a pile of dryer warm towels? Dryer smell is the best smell in the world. (Except for Oktoberfest which is a completely different letter).
