last week tonight

Apparently I've been lying about not liking concerts for at least a while. I've told people they're boring and too long and loud. Well, this last concert was an adventure.
First it started pouring rain in the afternoon, and the doors open time got pushed back from 5:30 to 6:30, and eventually 7:30. It wasn't pouring, but I had the hood of my hoodie up while we waited in line. I'm so glad I remembered to pack it at the last moment. Spent all night irritatingly damp but otherwise fine while the rain moved away and we were sitting under the roof in actual stadium seats.
The first act was Robert Earl Keen and it was . . . bad. I thought, yes, vindication (in a Raymond Holt voice) concerts are stupid. I could only understand a handful of words and the sound system was completely jacked. Several people in line had come to see him specifically so I assumed that was the best it would get.
Friends and enemies, I was very wrong.
The Avett Brothers were much more high energy, and they had the lights, smoke, and camera system cues working for them. Most importantly the sound system made them loud but balanced and I could hear all the part and actually understand all the words even the songs I didn't know. Probably this only worked for me because I've been following this group for idk, more than ten years maybe? I had such a good, laid back time. I wore my mask and because of the rain and late start, the place was not packed. Nobody touched me. I came home with that poster up there and a tshirt.
The rest of the trip was good, I caught up with Ruth and tried to encourage her with all the stuff she's trying to get better at like cleaning her apartment and some sort of new therapy she's doing. We went to Crystal Bridges Art Museum. This Portrait of Bob was one of my favorites.
The dogs were very happy to get back into the house and the air conditioning when I got home on Saturday.
