chase_acow: Bradley and Jake in Stargate Atlantis uniforms arguing with each other (tg sga)

I got blocked on reading last year and didn't finish much. I didn't think I had a lot of guilty pleasures, but apparently trashy m/m romance and/or erotica books are one. I did manage to read a few of those I enjoyed but was too embarrassed to add them to my goodreads. And y'know . . . what's the point of reading if I can't track it to crow about finishing a reading challenge? My brain is broken.

Anyway, this year, I'm moving to StoryGraph where no one in real life can find me. I will be free to admit to anything I do actually read.

81 Things That Blew Our Minds in 2023

Cry Once A Week - I can manage this on my own, thank you very much.

I posted 18 fics to AO3 last year for a total of 149 so I missed a round number by 1, dang it.
2 MCU and 16 Top Gun - most of it porn. Several of them, I really enjoyed writing and rereading, so I consider it a successful year.
chase_acow: harley quinn and her egg sandwich from the movie Birds of Prey (bop love)
The google spyware known as my phone tells me that I walked 18 miles and drove 3,930 miles last year. That's probably not enough walking. I should probably beat that in 2023. New goal!

Fandom navel gazing from last year. Fav book, movie, etc and too much Top Gun. Also grumbling about games. )
chase_acow: black and white wolf howling (random wolf)
Nine days in a night shift streak is too many. I'm about to put a bloody hand print on a Lysol tube for some entertainment. I am really looking forward to the next seven days I get off though. I'm going to sleep at night and go to sit down restaurants during the day. You know, live the dream.

Vox's 2022 in 7 mins - was a little depressing, not gonna lie.

chase_acow: the elf from the Rudolph cartoon reading a book titled "PORN" (winter porn)

TL;DR - A story told over multiple xmas years. Featuring Bradley looking for his home and Jake trying to fix everything with sex. Sad, sappy middle with a happy ending. Bradley is still an Eagles fan, sings another Jerry Lee Lewis song, and Jake likes his country music.

Lyrics, an overly complicated timeline, and which songs belong to who! )

And finally for my own records: Spotify Wrapped 2022 )

1. Your main fandom of the year? As if there was any doubt, but clearly it’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Sure, it wasn’t the best plotted or paced mini series ever, but those fellas looked good and there were enough great character moments to keep me thinking about them.
”qYbd4c.jpg”

2. Your favorite film you watched this year? The Suicide Squad and Spider-Man: No Way Home for opposites reasons. I loved how random, violent, and grumpy found family the suicide squad becomes. I loved how Spider-Man is a hero who has always tried to save other, especially the everyday people and the bad-guy goons.
King Shark is just adorable

3. Your favorite book read this year? When We Were Animals is still in the back of my mind.
“Promises are easy to make. [...] They speak of a defined future to which you are required to adhere. They commit you beyond the length of your experience.  What they do is take away possibility.   Promises are the opposite of hope.”

4. Your favorite album or song to listen to this year? Once I figured it out, my Sam Wilson TFATWS playlist is my most listened to according to Spotify.

5. Your favourite TV show of the year? I really enjoyed Loki like, much more than I ever would have expected. Fandom turned Loki who was a lackluster unmotivated villain into the woobiest and I detest woobies. He was better in Ragnarok but I still didn’t care much. Loki just hit the right combination of fish out of water, redemption arc, and found family friendship. Loki/Mobius has a lot of potential, but the power dynamics of a lot of the fanfic is not my cup of tea.
(Though one of my favorite parts was the behind-the-scenes where Owen Wilson looked pleased that Tom Hiddleston thought he could play Hamlet.)
Please rec anything you liked to me, I would love to read more for them!

I enjoyed this fic: semper idem

6. Your best new fandom discovery of the year? I can’t think of anything that really answers this question? I only wrote Sam/Bucky and Dragon Age.
but here’s a pic of my cat! )

7. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year? Well, I didn’t expect much from Black Widow, and we did get Yelena out of it, so I’ll go with Candyman. I’d been very excited and into the trailers, but the movie just didn’t work for me, and it wasn’t what I wanted it to be anyway.

8. Your fandom boyfriend(s) of the year? Pls, I am Sam Wilson monogamous. )

9. Your fandom girlfriend(s) of the year? I spent a lot of time back in Mass Effect when the Legendary Edition dropped, and Commander Shepard still means so much to me. She is fantastic, and I love her face, and I love sniping the bad guys.
I Insist You Play Mass Effect as a Woman

10. Your biggest squee moment of the year? I really enjoyed the last season of Brooklyn 99 and I thought they made good decisions for the characters and story given the filming and plot issues they had to deal with.
But also, let’s face facts, and the reveal of Sam’s Captain America uniform in TFATWS was clearly the fandom moment that elicited the biggest reaction from me.
OMG, I know this is a toy, but it’s still so pretty! )

11. The most missed of your old fandoms? I watched the Synder cut of Justice League and really enjoyed it, but it also apparently opened some old Jason Momoa feelings, so I went to poke around SGA. I wanted Ronon Dex/Rodney McKay, but sadly there is not a lot on AO3 and I don’t remember where else I would look from a million years ago when I was in the fandom.

12. The fandom you haven’t tried yet, but want to? IDK? I want to try watching Wheel of Time, Station Eleven, and His Dark Materials at some point, but even if I get through them it doesn’t mean I’ll be fannish about them?

13. Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?  Sadly there aren’t any Sam projects for 2022 that I know about, so I am VERY excited for video games! Horizon Zero Dawn: Forbidden West drops in February and God of War: Ragnarok at some point. I guess I need to start actually trying to get a PS5 now.

1. Your main fandom of the year?

I probably read the most in Marvel(ish) movies - MCU and Deadpool. I think I only wrote Stargate and Men in Black.

2. Your favorite film you watched this year?

I watched a lot of movies, some of them were okay/good and some were bad, the one that I'm still kinda thinking about is Sorry to Bother You. It's streaming on Hulu now if you want to watch it. What I really loved was that the trailers didn't give it away, and the satire was enough to make me think about real world issues without making me super depressed. The most watchable movie was definitely Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse. I'm excited for more Miles.

3. Your favorite book read this year?

The Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire. I love portal stories and I love the what happens after the adventure stories. They're short, easy to read, and keeps your imagination going.

4. Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?

Spotify says my top three for 2018 (at least since May) were:

On Tuesdays- the 4onthefloor

Holler - Band of Rascals

Bully for you - Hotel Mira

All three of which were on my playlist called Love of My Lives which was about a woman stuck in a time loop who decided to use her power to help people, assassinate certain political leaders, and fall madly in love with a CIA agent who alternated between looking like Oscar Isaac and Josh Brolin.

5. Your favorite TV show of the year?

I ate The Good Place up! I watched S1 last spring, S2 when it came out on Netflix, and I'm keeping up with S3. S1 is still my favorite, but I'm really interested in where they're going with the actual Good Place. I keep meaning to look up fusions/crossovers, or try to write the one I want. But like so many things, I won't hold my breath over my creative abilities.

6. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?

I don't think I discovered a new fandom. I took comfort in old favorites more likely.

7. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?

The new Doctor Who. Don't get me wrong, I really like 13, especially after not watching any of 12. And I like her trio of companions, but I don't feel like she had a moment to shine. I don't remember any quoteables and I miss having a season/series arc. I haven't actually watched the New Year special yet though, but on the whole it was kinda mediocre.

8. Your fandom boyfriend of the year?

Josh Brolin won this year. What a weird dude, but he is very watchable in just about everything he does. I don't know if he's any good or not, but his choices are up my alley, and he even made me feel a little bit positive toward that monster Bush in W.

9. Your fandom girlfriend of the year?

Eleanor from The Good Place, though I've had a bit of a crush on Kristen Bell via Dax Shepard for a while now. She's such an Arizona dirt bag in a dumpster fire and she gives me such hope for humanity. I mean we all know someone who is on the sliding scale of awful, and if she can make good decisions sometimes, then maybe they can too.

10. Your biggest squee moment of the year?

I was so bogged down in my own rage and despair that I don't think I had enough emotions left to squee over anything.

11. The most missed of your old fandoms?

I went looking for McShep from SGA, but a lot of what I found from the good old days didn't keep my attention any more. And I refuse to ever read "Freedom's Just Another Word for Nothing Left to Lose" because once was more than enough for my emotional well being.

12. The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?

I mean, I'd like to watch the new Star Trek but it hasn't happened yet.

13. Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?

I don't know, there's a lot of movies I'm looking forward to watching, but I think the last real anticipation I had was the Hobbit trilogy and again, I cried to much at the last one to enjoy the rewatch knowing what's waiting for me. I miss being super excited for the next Harry Potter or Star Wars or whatever, but I don't think that's the life I live anymore.

chase_acow: ominous dorian from dragon age, lover's tarot card (da dorian)
1. Your main fandom of the year?
Post Captain America: Civil War, which got me back into writing and attempting to rejoin fandom. I watched it in the theater and was disappointed by Tony’s storyline, and I didn’t really think about it much. I watched when it got thrown up on Netflix and was able to just enjoy the Team Cap members. I found people on Tumblr who were in love with Sam, and immediately went to gobble up all the Sam/Bucky AO3 could provide.

2. Your favorite film watched this year?
There were a lot of very adequate movies this year- Get Out, Moonlight, Wonder Woman, but the one that’s going to stick with me is CoCo. And I don’t know, maybe it’s emotional manipulation at its finest, but I loved it. The animation was beautiful, the soundtrack memorable, and the voice acting great. I loved the story and I thought Dante was adorable.

3. Your favorite book read this year?
I did actually read books this year. I got off to a good start, and then went back to stumbling endlessly through the internet. But I loved World War Z and it stuck with me. Human nature was definitely the star of the book, and it wasn’t all bad. There was hope and optimism, and regret and guilt. I really liked the style of writing since the individual vignettes were broken up for quick reading.

4. Your favorite TV show of the year?
Well, I’ve definitely been enjoying H5O, the new shows I watch are Designated Survivor and The Orville. I don’t know if despite my love of Kiefer Sutherland, I would have given Designated Survivor much attention if not for our current political environment. But I was desperate for a president who was a good man, who was moral and ethical, and desperate to do the right thing, the helpful thing, the kind thing. The Orville is a fun romp, it’s not a spoof, it's as good as Star Trek was for me. I like the cast, the adventures, I like the optimism and exploration. I love the nonhuman characters and how they illustrate what we consider the human condition.

5. Your favorite online fandom community of the year?
The Sam Wilson Big Bang was a lot of fun. It was my only online fandom I tried to engage in, and while I was hit or miss in their slack channel, I do hope they do another round next year.

6. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Ummm, IDK? A new pairing I read was from Maleficent - Maleficent/Diaval. And I’ve enjoyed that dynamic quite a bit.

7. Your biggest media disappointment of the year?
Easy - The Handmaid’s Tale. I read the book and loved it last spring, but I couldn’t get over the main actress, and I didn’t bother to finish the mini-series on HULU. It felt too drawn out, I never cared much about Luke. I really wanted to like it, and the production value and the look of it was great. Such a bummer for me.

8. Your boyfriend of the year?
Steve McGarrett. No question. He hits near every button I have. He sacrifices for what’s right, and for the people he loves, whether they reciprocate or not. He has an incredibly hard time verbalizing his feelings. There is violence there, carefully controlled. I like his sense of humor. Also, he’s very, very pretty, and his eyebrows do weird things.

9. Your girlfriend of the year?
I absolutely loved Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok. I loved her look, and I loved that she got to be the drunk, bad girl with a heart of gold trying to make up for her sins of the past. It totally works for a female character and I would sell off my hair for more.

10. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Oh man, I have no idea.

11. The most missed of your old fandoms?
I went back to SGA about a month ago, prompted by all the McDanno I was reading. I miss watching an episode every week and then talking about it with others. I just don’t really have the time or patience to consume TV that way anymore. I had forgotten how much I loved John Shepard though. That weird, lanky, touch averse, pointy eared, fly-boy.

12. The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
I meant to try to write more out of my comfort zone, but I honestly can’t think of any particulars.

13. Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
I am so excited for the new Tomb Raider. I loved the games so much!

1. Yeah, I'd like to say that I've been busy doing cool and exciting stuff -- but that would be a total lie. 2. Because I'm not going to hold my breath waiting to get the fic I requested from the ficathon, I decided to write my own prompt. 3. “Well, I guess, that’s that,” Daniel said when the door shut to the room they’d been shown. 4. So, I quit my job... And now I'm just hanging. 5. Somebody please tell God that April showers should have ended yesterday. 6. I've been at IHOP for the last two hours. People are starting to look at me funny. The town was nearly washed away last night. Seriously, there are lakes today where yesterday there were none. 7. Matt Farrell has eaten my brain. 8. NOT DEAD! 9. Insanejournal is bringing back the porn on September 1st. 10. I had a very sleepless night so I stayed up and organized my Halloween music and started messing with my layout. 11. I are sick, and is not having fun. 12. Arry! by Advanced Potion-Making Upbeat, rock version of the theme song. I've associated Harry Potter with Christmas, but I have no idea why. : )
