chase_acow: Sam Wilson from Captain America happy and flying (cap s happy)
I went to the lake this morning to swim, and I only stayed in about half an hour, but wow am I sore. These are not the muscles I was working out when I made myself elliptical and lift. I took the weekend off hoping to soak up some sun and sleep at night, but it's supposed to start raining tonight and not stop until Thursday. Alas. But, I did not get sunburnt, and I'm really enjoying the book I started!

I've been saving Solos on Amazon Prime for when I really needed it on night shift. That moment came last night, and OMG I loved Mackie's episode Tom so much. And Helen Mirren's Peg because she is amazing and the two eps are connected. I bawled so much. They are designed to make you cry but it is excellent story telling by excellent actors. It's all about family.

These two plus Morgan Freeman's Stuart are the best, and highest rated. I also thought Anne Hathoway's Leah and Uzo Aduba's Sasha (though this is the most pandemic contenty one of them all, so it might not be for everyone) were good. I hated Jenny because cringe and Nera because it's pregnancy horror.

The series ponders what it means to be human, arguing that we are connected to others through shared experiences, even in our most isolated moments.

I also finally watched this video of Oscar Isaac, Anthony Mackie, Kevin Kline, Jessica Chastain and others talking about their teacher at Juilliard, their time at school, and acting. It's fun, informative, and interesting, and Mackie is very fuzzy, Oscar's gray hair is beautiful, and Jessica asks the hard questions. They're all so smart, and they get it. They talk about the racism, elitism, and sexism they faced and is ongoing in today's culture.
chase_acow: Mass Effect Shepard quote "Don't fear the Reapers." (me reapers)
I have watched so much Survivor. I am on season 34 - Game Changers which I wanted to watch because I liked Zeke who was a contestant on the previous season, who on this season was outed as trans in tribal council. I knew it was coming because it was impossible to avoid a major spoiler like this when reading up on the different seasons' controversies, so I was able to do a little research. Turns out he got to be involved with Netflix's Disclosure. And he wrote this really amazing personal essay.

I stupidly didn't watch it before my subscription ended and I am taking a break from Netflix and Disney+ for a while. At least until Falcon and Winter Soldier finally gets dropped.

I did watch The Old Guard last week, and it is a really well done movie and entirely watchable. But it wasn't fun. It's stoic and has great action scenes and soundtracks, but I don't think it made me smile let alone laugh. It's not The Losers. I fully recommend it, but I went into it expecting something a bit more entertaining.

We've gone to 12 hr shifts at work and I got the 8pm to 8am slot . . . yay. But they are letting us do 4 hrs of 'work from home' that are basically free, so no overtime and four days off. This is the second attempt at this schedule because the boss finally realized that making us suffer a 48hr week while he was constantly 'working from home' was a bad optic.

my health )

I thought I'd try to watch Parks and Rec as a kind of mindless way to pass the time. I binged watched it once before and thought I remembered it being pretty harmless. Mostly I came away with an increased fascination for Adam Scott and more reasons to dislike Chris Pratt.

This time it has turned into an ultimate hate watch, but I am nearly done. Finally. )

Anyway, I was just . . . watching the days slip by me. Today I unloaded and loaded the dishwasher, did a cycle of laundry, brushed the dog (he is not a fan yet), and took a bath.

Did someone say Everything's Alright Now?

Since we had our first rehearsal last night for the community band holiday concert last night, I now feel I can unashamedly start listening to my xmas playlists to start tidying them. However, we also had some high drama I had to get involved in which I feel strange about.

The players:
Jan - about grandma age, looks like a much shorter Jamie Lee Curtis from the last Halloween movie, poofy gray hair and all. She let me student teach with her 15 years ago when I was actually assigned to the football coach who had planning period first hour, and we've kept in touch through community band stuff ever since.

Dennis - not quite grandpa age, little quiet dude who I had thought was okay. He would talk to me if I started the conversation but otherwise kept to himself during practice/concerts. Also plays trombone.

Okay, so if you are one of those amazingly smart people who are interested in gender issues and teaching people how not to be jerks, maybe you could help me out for a second? I admit, I am not the most culturally or gender aware person, but fandom has taught me to think about things in different ways, and I am always interested in becoming better. Less judgmental, less hateful, more open and inclusive.

Here is my quandary -> Miranda in Mass Effect

I played the game several times and I couldn't stand her. Admittedly, she brought me back from the dead, is the highest officer in a secret organization that has lied to me and put my friends at risk, and she questions most of the decisions I make. I didn't think I was supposed to like her based from that. BUT, I also despised the costume she wore. All the men get armor to wear, while the women wear whatever tiny, skintight, slinky thing they want, but Miranda also had to deal with all the gratuitous butt/cleavage shots any time we had a conversation.

I hated Miranda and couldn't stand to look at her. I never took her on any missions and only spoke to her when I had to.

Then, I downloaded a DLC that contained alternate appearances for her, and Jack. Jack got clothes that covered her chest to wear that was kind of badass!punk and Miranda got armor. I like them both so much better now. I take them both on missions and have actually gone through all the dialog trees with them. I actually empathize with them in a way I couldn't before.

So, does what a woman wears really make that much of a difference in whether I like her or not? I mean, men make video games, and real soldiers are going to wear uniforms/armor not catsuits, so this isn't reality. It just made me think about women in media and a little about why I avoided these two gals. They still don't have the most engaging story lines, or dialog, but I do enjoy them more. I just kinda wondered if anyone had any opinions or meta recs that I could read.

Please help me dear flist/rlist. I'm looking for TV that shows sex, particularly a female having good sex, often, and with whoever she wants as a positive.

I've got: Xena, Lost Girl, Saving Grace, and Farscape. I need at least one more for a thing, but now I'm honestly curious about what's out there.

I've tried to google around, but I haven't found anything. I think maybe I'm not asking the right question.

Howdy all! I'm all caught up on SPN, and I loved, loved, loved 5.10 Abandon All Hope. But first . . .

[Poll #1489590]

Personally, I don't automatically defriend back if somebody bumps me off their flist, and I've always wondered if that irritates people. I don't mind when people keep me on their flist after I've defriended -> I try to still check their journals off and on.

And, now onto a topic only mildly related -> There's a lot of people who are breaking up with Supernatural after 5.10 and I totally don't get it.

Spoilers for Abandon All Hope )

You know when you hit the post button and LJ asks if you want to restore the saved draft? Well, LJ did, but I couldn't remember what it could possibly be so I hit OK. This is what popped up ->

Two words.

I am drunk.

I seriously don't remember getting on LJ last Friday, but apparently I did and y'all missed an awesomely intellectual post. : ) We drank, watched Max Payne (didn't like it) and Tropic Thunder (still love it) and decided that we would start opening all our group events by sticking out hands out and shouting "IT'S HAMMER TIME!" at the top of our lungs.

American Idol is bizarre this year. None of the contestants are really blowing me away, but the judges are more hilarious and x-rated than ever. : )

So, Genevieve Cortese aka Season four Ruby did an interview here at the Support Supernatural site. I've got to say that I'm more inclined to side with Why Supernatural Fans hate Ruby 2.0- and the demons they do like.

Not for fans of either Genevieve or Ruby because I'm just not a supporter. I don't judge people who are because after all, I have that unfortunate thing for Bill Paxton. Not that I judge other people for being Bill Paxton fans or not either. Seriously. )

Box folder for instrumental/creepy halloween songs.

I only see [livejournal.com profile] ohnotheydidnt whenever I'm surfing my friendsfriends list, but I ran across this post of Shrieking Violets: 25 Butt-kicking Babes. Who would y'all add to this list? When I was little, I was completely taken with Red Sonja (the movie). I thought she was the most awesome female hero ever.

Sometimes it's ok to pimp yourself out. Post a list of your top five fic-favorites you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most.

I really like reading when other people do this, so I thought I'd give it a go. If you haven't done it, you should! : )

1. Close Encounters of the Showering Kind Ewan/Hayden NC-17
A draft of extremely cold air around his privates was the only warning he received.

This was one of the earliest things I wrote on this journal. I wanted to write everyday for a week and this is what came out. I think the boys are cute, but it may suffer a bit for the "any two guys" syndrome. I didn't really get into the SW RPS like I have SPN or SGA.

Why Women Should Rule the World by Dee Dee Myers

March 19: Stephen Colbert The Colbert Report

Despite the title of the book, she stresses equality between the sexes.

She worked for the during Bill Clinton’s presidency. Not any one woman, but lots of women.

Early childhood education, diversity…

First female press secretary. Challenging at times 31, est credibility. Judged by a different standard.

She was paid less than a man in the same position and men she worked with. Pay disparity - needs to ask, assert themselves, don’t take credit.

Let me get some good stuff out first:

1. The Colbert/Stewart/O'Brien (srsly don't go there) was made of awesome and will probably amuse me for the rest of time.

points 2-5 )

The bad:

6. One day, I will learn not to read fandom meta.

Problem A: starts with all you people being so much more intelligent than I am. Now, I'm no dummy, but I'll admit to being fairly superficial in my life/writing/reading/watching habits. Probably half of the points y'all make go right over my head.
Problem B: is that I am the incredible minority of fen from Okieland/Bible Belt/midwest/whatever. I just don't think the way that people from the coasts, Canada, Europe, or Australia think. Too bad too, 'cause you're way awesome.
Problem C: I have bizarre personal gender thoughts of which there has never been made a box to fit. I'm not a feminist, and I feel slightly like a traitor. Most days, I don't feel particularly feminine, or womanly at all. It's discomforting for this to be shoved back in my face (though admittedly, I do it to myself).

Basically those combine to make me confused, befuddled, and strangely uncomfortable. I don't know precisely where that leaves me fandom-wise. Jealous, I guess.

Yes, this is all from the SPN fallout from the last episode. I use this icon ironically. (I think, unless I'm not, but in that case I swear that I'm not being intentionally dense.)

7-9 )

To sum up: can someone give me a girl prompt or two? I promise nothing, but I'd like to give it a try. Preferably something quirky, AUs, crossovers, upbeat, big ideas, just be nice to me, yeah? : )
