Movie: I fucking loved The Monkey. I did not watch any trailers, had no expectations, had to ignore obnoxious loudness by the other folks in the theater, and I was absolutely into it. I'm not entirely sure how to describe what it actually was. Not a horror movie - but a couple jump scares. A super dark family dram-com? Gory for sure. Somehow uplifting. Hilarious. Thoughtful. Surprising. I enjoyed both Adam Scott and Elijah Wood in their small roles. perfect.

TV: I just need to shout into the void about how much I dislike the new rookies this season on The Rookie. )

Work: Our rookie put in her two week notice when she decided she was unwilling to work any shift but day shift in a job with mandatory 24/7 operation and a three month rotation so nobody goes stir crazy while on overnights. . . . Good riddance. I was already betting against her making it through fall. Defensive and unwilling to try when she didn't get the right answer the first time she tried. Also a lot of petty personal junk I won't get into. I did not appreciate the trauma dump during the first week, and most her problems were created by herself.

I left work a couple of hours early today. There's only so much nothing a person can stand. I actually did get a call back from Career Services, one of the departments I'd applied to late Friday when I was of course asleep. So I'll call them back Monday morning and see if they want to interview me before they tell me 'nah, we picked someone else'. It's been a long three years of vaguely serious job searching.

What would make you leave a fandom, or prevent you from getting into it in the first place?

I drifted away from Stargate Atlantis and Teen Wolf before they finished because the shows weren't going where I wanted them to. The AUs that fans provided were more interesting and satisfying to me. I still remember someone immediately unfriending me after I posted a very negative and uncut episode reaction of SGA (I shouldn't have and I hope I wouldn't now.) and that was when I knew I should definitely get out. Supernatural just went on way too long, and kinda like SGA I didn't see any character growth/change. The assholes were still assholes and they didn't even pretend to be anything else as they continued to make the same mistakes or choices over and over again.

I've never tried Hannibal because I don't find either main character attractive, and I guess I am that shallow when it comes to my free time?

is that too much to ask?

I have three applications out now, but wow do I hate my bosses and wish them embarrassing newspaper worthy accidents. )

What's a fandom that you wish had a bigger following?

What a double edged sword. There was a very adequate amount of Bucky/Sam fic on AO3 pre Falcon and Winter Soldier, and now . . . now there's an awful lot of messy stuff to sort through before I find something good that I want to read. At this point I filter through and exclude about fifteen pairings I don't want to see and a couple of tags that inevitably point to some bad choices made somewhere.

However I do wish someone would scratch the itch that is Sebastian Stan's asshole character from The Bronze - Lance Tucker/Sam Wilson. Forget about beligerent sexual tension, that would be full on antagonistic sexual frustration and really weird sex choices.

And my other rarepair wish from Rampage. There's just something about Jeffrey Dean Morgan's swishy Other Government Agency character and the Rock's definitely not heterosexual character that I'd like to see explored. There's only one other person who ever requests the fandom though, and they are the requester of every monkey/ape/gorilla/sashquatch request you never actually wanted to read.

What are the origins of your penname/username? via June Something

I don't remember what username I first started out with, but I know there was a couple. The one right before this was sly_bone because I was trying to be a good Harry Potter fan proclaiming my Slytherin roots mashed with my brand new ability to make noise on a trombone. There was already a BNF who went by Sly. It never really clicked for me. I remember doing a poll about what I should change it to, but I can't find it to even see what the other options were.

It was so hard to watch new things last summer. All the movies were cancelled. I was working 12hr night shifts. All I did was hate watch Once Upon A Time and all 40 seasons of Survivor. I finally started watching new things in December. Now since Falcon and the Winter Soldier is over I think I have more WIPs than I have in over a decade. So many files with so much porn. I really liked Bucky and his unwanted friendship with Redwing in this fic. You know I love Redwing. Both Sam and Bucky look good here and I enjoyed the bad guys. Quality time!

Bucky regretted a lot of things in his too-long lifetime, but right now, at the very top of the list, with a very bold bullet point, was keeping that damn drone in the specs for Sam's new suit. Now the little pest wouldn't leave him alone.

But, he still had one last set of amends to make, after all.

1. Your main fandom of the year?
Post Captain America: Civil War, which got me back into writing and attempting to rejoin fandom. I watched it in the theater and was disappointed by Tony’s storyline, and I didn’t really think about it much. I watched when it got thrown up on Netflix and was able to just enjoy the Team Cap members. I found people on Tumblr who were in love with Sam, and immediately went to gobble up all the Sam/Bucky AO3 could provide.

2. Your favorite film watched this year?
There were a lot of very adequate movies this year- Get Out, Moonlight, Wonder Woman, but the one that’s going to stick with me is CoCo. And I don’t know, maybe it’s emotional manipulation at its finest, but I loved it. The animation was beautiful, the soundtrack memorable, and the voice acting great. I loved the story and I thought Dante was adorable.

3. Your favorite book read this year?
I did actually read books this year. I got off to a good start, and then went back to stumbling endlessly through the internet. But I loved World War Z and it stuck with me. Human nature was definitely the star of the book, and it wasn’t all bad. There was hope and optimism, and regret and guilt. I really liked the style of writing since the individual vignettes were broken up for quick reading.

4. Your favorite TV show of the year?
Well, I’ve definitely been enjoying H5O, the new shows I watch are Designated Survivor and The Orville. I don’t know if despite my love of Kiefer Sutherland, I would have given Designated Survivor much attention if not for our current political environment. But I was desperate for a president who was a good man, who was moral and ethical, and desperate to do the right thing, the helpful thing, the kind thing. The Orville is a fun romp, it’s not a spoof, it's as good as Star Trek was for me. I like the cast, the adventures, I like the optimism and exploration. I love the nonhuman characters and how they illustrate what we consider the human condition.

5. Your favorite online fandom community of the year?
The Sam Wilson Big Bang was a lot of fun. It was my only online fandom I tried to engage in, and while I was hit or miss in their slack channel, I do hope they do another round next year.

6. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Ummm, IDK? A new pairing I read was from Maleficent - Maleficent/Diaval. And I’ve enjoyed that dynamic quite a bit.

7. Your biggest media disappointment of the year?
Easy - The Handmaid’s Tale. I read the book and loved it last spring, but I couldn’t get over the main actress, and I didn’t bother to finish the mini-series on HULU. It felt too drawn out, I never cared much about Luke. I really wanted to like it, and the production value and the look of it was great. Such a bummer for me.

8. Your boyfriend of the year?
Steve McGarrett. No question. He hits near every button I have. He sacrifices for what’s right, and for the people he loves, whether they reciprocate or not. He has an incredibly hard time verbalizing his feelings. There is violence there, carefully controlled. I like his sense of humor. Also, he’s very, very pretty, and his eyebrows do weird things.

9. Your girlfriend of the year?
I absolutely loved Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok. I loved her look, and I loved that she got to be the drunk, bad girl with a heart of gold trying to make up for her sins of the past. It totally works for a female character and I would sell off my hair for more.

10. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Oh man, I have no idea.

11. The most missed of your old fandoms?
I went back to SGA about a month ago, prompted by all the McDanno I was reading. I miss watching an episode every week and then talking about it with others. I just don’t really have the time or patience to consume TV that way anymore. I had forgotten how much I loved John Shepard though. That weird, lanky, touch averse, pointy eared, fly-boy.

12. The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
I meant to try to write more out of my comfort zone, but I honestly can’t think of any particulars.

13. Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
I am so excited for the new Tomb Raider. I loved the games so much!

9. Who is your favorite villain?

This one is super hard for me, and it might be why I had such an easy time stalling out on this meme. I think the villains that really capture my imagination and fuel my fears are the ones who can't be reasoned with, they do what they do because it's all they can do. They are madness, they are death, and there is no bargaining for your life.

I watched both Jaws and Terminator when I was way too young. To this day, I still have nightmares about them. The sharks tend to swim through the air and hide around corners waiting for me to innocently pass by. Sometimes they tunnel underground, an idea I blame the cartoon Street Sharks for. Terminators walk the streets and the sky is always red from burning. Sometimes they have pet dinosaurs. Hey, I'm not one to judge, but dinosaurs are f-ing terrifying to me.

Also aliens. I have all the nightmares about aliens.

6. What's your current fandom love(s) and/or ship(s)?

I mostly live in The Hobbit right now, due to these terrible losers who are going to ruin my life. ->

Thorin/Bilbo comic. )

This pairing is ripe for some of my favorite tropes/kinks: sharing body heat, courting misunderstandings, size difference, power imbalance, arranged marriage, grooming, and grumpy families of choice.

I also still read Derek/Stiles in Teen Wolf but I have not watched the most recent season, and I probably won't watch 3B either. I love the characters and the possibilities but I love the show runner and in universe direction a lot less. I am a little sad to miss out of Cora though.

There's some pairings I still dabble in reading when the right story comes across my flist: Steve/Tony (Avengers)and Sherlock/John (BBC). I wish there was more Mass Effect and Dragon Age I was interested in reading.

I'm also still loving the Doctor Who fandom but I don't ship anyone there.

PS- This is going to take me more than a month. : )

5. What show from your childhood would you love to bring back?

I just bought a season of Zorro the series from ABCFamily in the early 1990s, and I requested it for Yuletide, so it's been on my mind a bit lately. I loved this series, the characters, the time period, and the music. It was ridiculous, but it was something I shared with my dad and Diego was my first crush on a character who was not a cartoon. : )

I would love a reboot, though I was not so enamored of Antonio Banderas in the two movies. I don't know if they would do it in the same time period, or if it would stand up to a present day adaptation. I figure there are enough storylines today about underdogs that Zorro could find a niche somewhere between Batman and Superman.

chase_acow: quote from Due South "Hey that's not buddies. I hate you." (ds buddies)
3. What was your first fandom love(s)? Your first ship(s)?

I started searching for fandom because of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. I needed people to talk to about the severe emotional roller coaster that Joss put me through. Then I realized that people were writing extra stories about my favorite characters? Count me in! I'd been reading above my head for years, so while the sex scenes weren't new, the level of explicit hotness was new, and forbidden, and awesome. I read Buffy/Angel until I found out about slash, and I don't remember ever being put off by it, or thinking it was weird. I enjoyed it and loved it right off the bat. I read Angel/Xander and Angel/Spike, as much as I could find. Then I quickly deleted all the history in the browser with a feverish paranoia.

You know what I miss? Those warnings on personal websites making you swear you were the age of consent in your country. Not that I ever clicked on them before I was 18, because then I would feel very naughty, and the guilt would probably shape my personality in my formative years.

Day 7- a brutal moment

I can't believe it took me until day 7 to get around to showing off shirtless!Derek. My priorities have obviously been skewed. However, this is not the sweaty, sexy clip that you're looking for. I mean, there are plenty of those for several of the characters, but this moment really makes me uncomfortable. Kate is a hunter, Derek is her prey, and I can understand that, even though as the audience we're supposed to side with Derek.

I wanted to like her as a fun kick-ass antagonist, but as a character, she's got issues that make her a cancer even to her own family. It's the creepy sexual overtone and complete joy she shows torturing him that makes it hard to watch. There's more to the scene, but even cutting to this part bothers me.

Day 6- a touching moment

There are several I could bring up. One thing this show does very well is craft layered relationships between characters that goes a bit beyond the easy stereotype interactions. It also acknowledges that kids really do love and need their parents who love them back -> even if they kind of baffle each other.

Scott's not really set up for success. He just moved in with his mom from a dad she says they're much better off without. She's never going to be up for mom of the year. She's young, works long, irregular hours as a nurse, and is a little overwhelmed with Scott. She tries though, you can see that she wants to make it work, but she's lonely, she doesn't know why Scott's suddenly acting out, and they obviously don't have any kind of cushion money-wise.

This is a clip from the prom episode. Scott's picked up a suit from God knows where with a jacket held together by duct tape. His mom's with him in his room, and they actually have a really nice conversation where he's talking about Alison and you can see that they do really care about each other.

Day 5- a hilarious moment

Oh my God, so many! I'm going to go with the first exchange that made me giggle because this was the first episode I watched. I don't think it needs any set up, because who doesn't want to be Batman and Robin some of the time? Stiles and Scott share a moment while breaking and entering.

Day 3- favorite episode

When the canon is only twelve episodes long, they're all fairly necessary. But if I were going to pick one to watch for the fun of it, I'd go with Wolf's Bane. Besides the hilarious Derek/Stiles nonsense, we got Allison trying figure things out, awesome Sheriff Stilinski scenes, and the Alpha reveal.

If nothing else, you should watch for the amazing Danny, Stiles, Derek scene in the middle. Derek takes his shirt off repeatedly and there's actually a good natured tease at Danny -> the gay character who is nice and everyone likes without it being a big deal that he's gay.

Day 2- least favorite male character

I try really hard not to bash characters, either in my posts or in my fic. I don't like reading when someone else bashes my characters after all, why would I want to do that to someone else? But I think there's some merit to a discussion that doesn't deteriorate into name calling and mud slinging.

Usually, the character that pisses me off the first time around really grow on me in a season or two once I figure out how to empathize with them. Right now, I have to say Jackson is my least favorite to try to engage with. He just pings both my douche and my tool radars and I instantly flash back to my own high school experiences when kids like him made me miserable. I kinda like his story arc, but something about the actor combined with the lines and lack of back story really annoys me.

I'm sorry y'all that love Jackson! He's just not my style at the moment, but I'd love to read about why you like him.

I can admit he looks good without a shirt. )

It's the one in Chocktaw OK, holler if you're going to swing by. They're doing two weekends instead of one for the first time. So, instead of sitting all nice and comfy in the air conditioning writing porn, I'mma be out in the heat slinging awesomely yummy potato salad. : )

I stole this meme first off tumblr (which I still don't actually get, but that's another post), but I didn't like some of the questions, so I just replaced them with something I thought was better. I still might change some of them to suit.

Day 1- favorite male character

Stiles! No doubt. He's the best part of Xander (from BtVS obviously) with added uber-competency and physical comedy. He's sarcastic, outspoken, and he goes after what he wants -> though most people completely miss the fact that he exists. He also has that vulnerable, heart on his sleeve, possibly on too much medication vibe that pings my inner H/C radar. He has interesting relationships with most the other characters on the show from Derek to Lydia to his dad, the sheriff. Technically, he's the best friend of the main character Scott (who is in fact a Teen Wolf) but Stiles gets his own storylines, he is the planner/conniver, and basically one day I expect that he'll save the world from zombies.
