All right, the kitten has a home with me. Her name is Bear because of the stubby tail and how she growls when she eats.

I love all the animals equally, but some are more equal than others )

My team laid the worst goose egg today. The fan base is completely melting down on twitter and the message boards, and I am enjoying it! Posers. Back in MY day we counted first downs as a win and didn't expect to go anywhere in December, and we still loved our loser team. . . Some of that was true.

Spotify’s Gimlet studios released its latest podcast today — Case 63. An English language adaptation of creator Julio Rojas’ Caso 63, this 10-episode audio drama follows a New York psychiatrist (Julianne Moore) who begins treating a patient (Oscar Isaac) that claims to be from the year 2062. Following a format that presents itself as recorded therapy sessions, listeners are taken along for the ride as the story quickly evolves into something that threatens the boundaries of the possible and the real.

10 episodes of 10-15mins each. I'm halfway through but I'm really enjoying it. Both actors do an amazing job. It's pretty heavy into world ending pandemics, so make sure that won't make you feel worse about real life.

covid and flu shots achieved today. I'm kinda hoping I feel terrible tomorrow so I can guilt free call in sick. Though it will mean inconveniencing my coworkers, so I might just suffer at work.

I read this book, and I liked it a lot. It has absolutely no point. I don't think there's a plot? It bothered me at first, but when I gave up waiting for sense I was able to read it better.

A gothic coming-of-age tale for modern times, When We Were Animals is a dark, provocative journey into the American heartland. So the main character is suburban housewife with a son and a nice guy husband who doesn't fit in great. Every night she sneaks down to the kitchen to write a kind of memoir about her childhood growing up in a small town where teenagers spend a year during puberty running wild during the full moon. They are straight up beautiful monsters, and the language used is such poetry.

Dune -> It was on my TV and I watched whenever Oscar Isaac was there. Timothée Chalamet annoys me - seems awful full of himself.

Squid Game -> I am not cut out to watch Korean dramas, I could not handle the acting which to my comfort zone looked like incredible OVERacting. I went through the eps a little faster on the computer where I could skip 10secs over some of my worst cringes. I think it's a giant conspiracy to get people to eat more fried chicken.

Eternals I liked it. But maybe I liked it because of the implications instead of the text? )

I'm now watching Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac in Scenes From a Marriage and wow they are brutal.

I went to the lake this morning to swim, and I only stayed in about half an hour, but wow am I sore. These are not the muscles I was working out when I made myself elliptical and lift. I took the weekend off hoping to soak up some sun and sleep at night, but it's supposed to start raining tonight and not stop until Thursday. Alas. But, I did not get sunburnt, and I'm really enjoying the book I started!

I've been saving Solos on Amazon Prime for when I really needed it on night shift. That moment came last night, and OMG I loved Mackie's episode Tom so much. And Helen Mirren's Peg because she is amazing and the two eps are connected. I bawled so much. They are designed to make you cry but it is excellent story telling by excellent actors. It's all about family.

These two plus Morgan Freeman's Stuart are the best, and highest rated. I also thought Anne Hathoway's Leah and Uzo Aduba's Sasha (though this is the most pandemic contenty one of them all, so it might not be for everyone) were good. I hated Jenny because cringe and Nera because it's pregnancy horror.

The series ponders what it means to be human, arguing that we are connected to others through shared experiences, even in our most isolated moments.

I also finally watched this video of Oscar Isaac, Anthony Mackie, Kevin Kline, Jessica Chastain and others talking about their teacher at Juilliard, their time at school, and acting. It's fun, informative, and interesting, and Mackie is very fuzzy, Oscar's gray hair is beautiful, and Jessica asks the hard questions. They're all so smart, and they get it. They talk about the racism, elitism, and sexism they faced and is ongoing in today's culture.

I survived working my 7 days in a row despite the boss' best efforts* to make me work a 10 hr yesterday for my last shift. I am now the senior dispatcher at work and the first of three possible dominoes has fallen. I'm staring down the possibility of 12 hr shifts and mandatory overtime so . . . boo.

I liked the last episode of Falcon and Winter Soldier, but. . . )

I like this clip of Oscar Isaac training/practice fighting. I love that his hair is going gray and that he man buns it. He looks so good here!

*dayshift got sick so he had to cover and was desperate to not have to stay the full 8 hrs. I hope he chokes on dinner and poops himself where everyone can see.

Masculinity and Hawaii 5-0 op-ed, but I thought she hit several good points. The only reason I can deal with all the ridiculously over the top action and violence is that Danny too is often going "Really?". As far as Steve/Danny goes, in this case I'm easy and could go either way. Platonic is just as meaningful to me as if they did become a couple. Unlike, say Dean/Cas from supernatural, Steve and Danny are much more complete characters and their trauma is totally different. BFFs would be a happily ever after for them. Similarly, I like the new series The Rookie because an older Nathan Fillion is a breath of fresh air next to a lot of the examples were given of toxic masculinity in the police force.

In Oscar Isaac news:

Triple Frontier Shows Netflix Using the Narcos Template to Shine a Light on Veterans’ Issues I'd like to see this movie actually start a conversation about veterans' issues, but it looks a little heavy on the pew-pew-pew kill-all-Mexicans front.

Oscar Isaac looks real good though, and apparently he's taking a year off after Star Wars, so less stuff in the near future from him.

Into the Spider-Verse spoilers? )

Basically, I'm super excited for this movie, and make sure you sit through the credits for the extra scene.

A-LISTER

to see the terrible movies.

I signed up for AMC's A-List and so far so good. I'm definitely going to get my money's worth this month. I've seen Operation Finale, Sorry to Bother You, and Happytime Murders-> three movies that couldn't be more different.

Operation Finale is a very well made movie. The costumes and scenery are great, the filmography was interesting. It's the story of Israeli special forces (?) going after the transportation architect of the holocaust who has made a new life for himself in South America. It's not a war movie, and though of course there's a small romance, it's not a love story, it's closer to a spy movie, but they honestly aren't that great at it. I was interested though, the whole way through, especially because I didn't know how it ended. I enjoy history, but it's not my greatest knowledge point. Oscar Isaac was fantastic, even if I was sometimes distracted by the booty.

Sorry to Bother You is a movie you don't see coming. Great cast, great soundtrack, but you think it's one thing from the trailers released, and it turns out to be something a little different. I loved it. It's great to see a movie that you can't completely predict. It's definitely rated R for a reason.

Happytime Murders is entertaining for the implications. Unlike the other, this is your usual detective, buddy cop type movie. I like the world building and the characters. It's not any raunchier than what you see in the trailers, which was a little disappointing. I'd like to ask for this fandom for Yuletide if I decide to try to write again.

So, I went and saw the late show of Annihilation last week. It's been a while since I saw a movie after 3pm, there were definitely more people there, but not a crowd. I'm glad I don't have a problem going to the movies by myself, because it's a lot easier to coordinate. Nothing new in the trailers but there was an extended one for Rampage which continues to look like a fun romp (though I have no nostalgia of the game like my coworkers), and I continue to be interested in A Quiet Place. I'll be glad when Red Sparrow moves on. I'm neither interested in Russians or spy movies, though Jennifer Lawrence continues to be beautiful.

cut because probably less people have seen this one, and it really didn't work for me. . . )

However, it's got a 79 on metacritic, so maybe it's a "me" problem instead of a movie problem.

tl;dr - I'm going to try to read the book, because it is an interesting premise and I think I would have loved the girl's science crew if the movie had just gotten out of it's own way. It felt like it was trying to be Arrival in tone, but it just tried to get too clever and for me it failed to even be that entertaining. Thank goodness for the giant lime coke I was drinking.

Saw Black Panther enjoyed it a lot. Maybe I should have seen it a little earlier, because all the hype about Killmonger made me super excited, and I felt like he didn't live up to it. Not the character or his backstory. I think maybe I wanted some inner conflict? I say all that as someone who can not write a villain to save my life. I don't know? But I did save as many write ups as I could about the movie so I could read them after I watched it, and maybe they will change my mind.

I echo every good thing everyone has said about the women, they were a group of spectacular actors and characters. Shuri is the most adorable little sister ever. I was more than half in love with all of them, and good thing because they got to emote a lot more than poor T'Challa did. They did a lot of heavy lifting to keep us caring and the plot moving.

I listened to the soundtrack when I went grocery shopping after and really enjoyed it. Give it a listen if you haven't yet.

There was an obnoxious dude in the back, ruined the ending by laughing over the slightly overwrought sunset scene. So there goes my enjoyment of watching movies with others.
