Reading: I finished The Teller of Small Fortunes By Julie Leong
summary )

I'd say this book is atypical of my reading. It's cozy. Nice characters make nice choices and band together against outside conflict. I'm sure it's somebody's wheelhouse, but I finished it! I enjoyed the cat.

Writing: I'm trying to get into a Cabin in the Woods/Empyrean series mash up from the adult teacher's POV. Zero narrative words, and idk a page and half of notes.

Watching: Somehow I got sucked into the gameshow The Floor? IDK either. It's fine I guess.
9-1-1: Lone Star finished and before the finale I had a dream that the entire show was a spin off from The Good Place and Owen was the architect in the system trying to guide the others to better choices so they could make it to their Good Place. The actual show was fine, but mine was better. : )
It's a good thing High Potential was already picked up for a second season, because that last episode was rushed and I'm not into that big of a cliff hanger for between seasons. I did get super obsessed with Daniel Sunjata though, and am now slowly making my way through Graceland.

Weather: 5/6th of my water pipes are frozen so you'd better believe I am babying the cold water in my bathroom. This was the week I was supposed to be able to teach the 40 hr basic course to our newbies all at once and instead we are all stuck at home typing through Teams. Thanks, I hate it, even if I do get to wear my sweatpants all day.

Cats:The outside not-my-cat is desperate to go back outside even though I have explained windchill several times now.
I bought an automatic litter box and one out of these six bastards is consistently using it. Two more are obsessed with it and I think they jump in and out just to watch it move. I still have hope a couple more will warm up to it, and then I'll buy another and only have two boxes to scoop.

The holidays don't really mean much except it's a chance to double my paycheck. My family never really fostered the traditions that bring up the nostalgia and regret to miss them. I remember a bunch of meaningless presents and my grandad always making someone cry. I remember being really uncomfortable and bored with the adults.

I like Santa. I love putting up tinsel and lights. I hate cooking/baking/stirring, but I definitely enjoy eating the chex mix, cheese ball, and whatever else I end up not ruining with my sad culinary skills. My savory apple hand pies did not work out this year.

Captain America: Brave New World trailer. Also it's a Valentine movie apparently. Maybe this time I'll ship Sam/Joaquin. )

Baseball:
The Phillies lost 18-3 to the not-so-hapless Oakland As yesterday. I'm gonna watch/listen the replay later while I do some cleaning around the house mostly because I want to know if the announcers can keep it together. They're pretty entertaining weirdos normally, but I think it's a good judge of character to watch a fan watch their team lay an egg. And because I want to see the vibes guy - Garrett Stubbs, our back up catcher, pitch the ninth ending as they just try to escape.

Cats:
I am taking my Phillie to her new home with my old roommate in the morning! And it's none too soon. I think my big cat is getting stressed and/or over-crowded, he's had moments being too rough while playing with the other long timers, and stalked Phillie to trap her under the table before I realized what was going on. Phillie has really bloomed into a playful and affectionate cat, I hope she settles into the new place okay.

Something bothering me:
I don't like punching down. I think nitpicking on typos, word mix-ups, and silly mistakes in fan-fic is punching down. We create because we love/hate/want-to-fix the source and hope that someone else will enjoy what we do. Seeing someone being mean about it is kinda a morale buster. It's not funny or helpful.

I had to flee to night shift to get away from two of the most annoying trainees we've ever had. I hate night shift, but it was a necessary evil to de-stress and let some anger go. The annoying thing is that my trainee was a good guy, just incapable of memorizing, repeating, or doing two things interchangeably. Things that are definitely a requirement for this job. He wants to be a cop and I am crossing my fingers he doesn't ask me for a recommendation and that no one is stupid enough to hire him for that.

So during my summer nights of eternal nothing, I am rewatching Supernatural. And wow did I forget how uncomfortable it is )

I guess I am now a Phillies fan? I apologize to all the other baseball fans - I know what I have chosen. I watched all their post seasons games last fall, then I took my parents to St. Louis so they could watch the Cards while I watched Realmuto in early April. Unfortunately (for me) we went to the one game my team lost that series. Since then I subscribed to the single team MLB.TV stream and have watched every game. At first it was so I could have 3 hrs every evening where I could mostly forget about my trainee being The Worst and now I'm on night shift, why not get paid to watch the game? They are a bunch of weirdos and they delight me.

I started feeding a new stray cat, she's a Tortie with at an attitude so I named her Phillie. I thought she was pregnant, but then she brought her three kittens to hang out on my porch under the carport. She let me pet her and talked to me in these cute little trills, but the kittens were totally wild and took off into a pretty gnarly thunderstorm rather than let me get anywhere close. So I borrowed some traps, but was cautious because I didn't want to lose them.

To celebrate leaving night shift I have been cleaning! I am going to make Cat Gaol more welcoming to my mental health. I want my craft stuff to be accessible so I can make things again. And I want it to be easier to clean the litter trays.

So, I found these two prints from BBC Sherlock. Is anyone interested in them or know someone who would be?

So I got off work at 8am this morning, and I did decide to lay down for a nap around 11 for about an hour.

It’s time to let go of impossible-to-achieve health goals and just…do less.

The Meanest Time Travel Movie Ever Made, 20 Years Later. If ‘The Butterfly Effect’ is remembered for anything, it’s unrelenting cruelty. The thing is, it was almost even crueler.

We watched the Director's Cut without realizing it was a whole separate ending, and were super confused when we were talking to people who'd seen the theatrical release. I still like this movie - with either ending.

I managed to bring two of the outside cats in during the cold snap and then the rain and we were all fairly comfortable. They were given the choice to go back outside yesterday morning and I tried not to take it personally when they immediately darted out and proceeded to frolic, roll in the dirt, and make love to the driveway again. I blame the black cats, they turned into bullying buttheads as time went on.*

* I mean not really, cats are territorial and Shark-Bait isn't neutered yet because Operation Catnip cancelled their last two TNR clinics. They all behaved so well for the small space of my house. I still believe Shark would be someone's fantastic companion, but I also won't be sad if we don't get that cold again and I don't have to kidnap him inside again.

It's been a million years. The kitten came back after her nursing duties were over (still salty she didn't bring me her kittens) so I scooped her up, got her fixed, and now she's a house cat. I thought she must have been someone's pet at one time because she talked to me and was so friendly, but inside, the TV freaked her out and she was deeply suspicious of the ceiling fans for days. While she started out as Mav, I figured that was too close to Mackie, so I renamed her Creed because she just kept punching everyone in the face at the beginning.

And it's fine, I guess.

I know it's better to just mute/block, but it's not as satisfying as telling someone they're dumb, full of drama, and should make better choices when it comes to tagging and cursing at other people pointing out their bad humor.

Or, I wish I could hear that achievement sound to prove I made a good decision.

I missed my chance to grab a very pregnant kitten last month, so now I'm feeding a very nursing mama and have not yet managed to follow her back to her kittens. I named her Mav, she's solid black and punched a cat twice her size in the face* to get at the wet food. I love her and would kill for her. She lets me pet her and pick her up, but she's so skinny I can't imagine she has a family.

I rewatched 50 First Dates about a billion times since April, and except for whatever the fuck they were doing to Rob Schneider, it's still a pretty good movie 19 years later.

I guess I'm not going to specifically shout into the void for snowflake #3? I know that lots of folks prefer not to see any negativity anywhere. I am someone who wants to know that at least one other person hates the very specific thing that I also hate. So, okay, reverse psych worked! Here we go!

Generic Video Game irks - stop making everyone grunt all the time and/or give me the option to mute background speech (I'm looking at you last Tomb Raider game and Horizon Forbidden West singing section), and there should be a 5 fetch quest maximum per game and two of them have to be funny (I'm still looking at you Horizon Forbidden West - which don't get me started on Ted Faro).

I have really enjoyed how bad the Teen Wolf movie apparently was. Tumblr is having a grand old time with it. I stopped watching in S2 or 3, but I will never escape as my Derek/Stiles fic is kudosed on the daily. I keep the mood pics and icons for nostalgia.

I'm at 34 out of 40 books for the year. I think I can make it without cheating as much as I did last year. The last fun book I read was The Bodyguard which is all over the best of lists.

This is the most fun I've ever had with a book that starts off with mom dying of an alcohol related disease and then getting dumped by boyfriend. The dialog is fast and clever, the situations are bonkers but fun, and the ending very satisfyingly ties everything up.

I didn't think The Santa Clauses series would be for me, but I noped out of the first episode and didn't even get to Peyton Manning. I do really like Kal Penn, but ugggg, I don't know if I can do it. My team laid the worst goose egg today. The fan base is completely melting down on twitter and the message boards, and I am enjoying it! Posers. Back in MY day we counted first downs as a win and didn't expect to go anywhere in December, and we still loved our loser team. . . Some of that was true.

Spotify’s Gimlet studios released its latest podcast today — Case 63. An English language adaptation of creator Julio Rojas’ Caso 63, this 10-episode audio drama follows a New York psychiatrist (Julianne Moore) who begins treating a patient (Oscar Isaac) that claims to be from the year 2062. Following a format that presents itself as recorded therapy sessions, listeners are taken along for the ride as the story quickly evolves into something that threatens the boundaries of the possible and the real.

10 episodes of 10-15mins each. I'm halfway through but I'm really enjoying it. Both actors do an amazing job. It's pretty heavy into world ending pandemics, so make sure that won't make you feel worse about real life.

She has a half mustache and a stumpy tail! I have been calling her Rookie. )

Last night right at sundown, I was out with my animals: Dasher and Pepper in the backyard, Gray in the front eating grass, and Mackie on his leash getting a feel for outside. This kitten runs out of the bushes between me and the nice older lady's house wanting to play and get some attention. Usually, I'm pretty good at petting and talking to a cat, maybe bringing out some water or wet food depending, and then letting it get on with cat things. But she was just so little! Maybe 9 or 10 weeks, and not as fat as you'd like to see the babies. It was also supposed to rain a lot last night, so I brought her in, checked for fleas and let her hangout until bedtime when she got sequestered into the spare bedroom.

Dogs loved her, she's not too in to them yet. She and the cats were very skittish, but interested.

This morning I went to ask the next door neighbor if she'd lost a kitten. She said no, she was pretty sure it belonged across the street, but that she hoped I'd keep it. She has pretty strict ideas about cats belonging inside as beloved and doted on pets.

So the across the street neighbors are nice, but they've have a couple of outside dogs that bark at me no matter what time I leave for work: 0730, 1530, or 2330. They also have an intact male cat who cycles through looking way too skinny and way too smug - sweet cat, but I don't want to know how many kittens he's responsible for. I know they let him in sometimes, but not all the time like extreme heat, rain, and last winter even though it was mostly mild.

I don't want to put her back outside, and I don't want to walk over and ask if she's theirs.

This morning, she and Mackie and playing and chasing each other around the house, while the older cat Gray follows along to watch and growl under her breath from a distance. I could keep her, but I've also put some feelers out to see if any of my friend's friends group is looking for a sweet inside kitty.

AITA?

I am still very pleased by my Rooster/Hangman fic where Hangman forces everyone to watch Texas v Oklahoma.

Also, super tired of working. I go in for a ten hr shift to cover the football game tonight and it is day 11 of 12 consecutive I had to go to work days because my days off got eaten by a coworker catching covid. I only had to work 6 and 4 hrs each for my days off, but it still decreases my de-stressing time. I don't think I've caught covid yet since the beginning, I desperately don't want to get it and I am still mostly being safe about things, but a week off without using leave would be awesome.

Mackie is almost 6 months now, and he's a little 9lb bowling bowl who gallops across the house at all hours and is testing new things he can jump on. He's gonna be such a big little asshole cat, I am excited to see how his personality settles in.

Top Gun: Maverick is turning serious adult men into fangirls – not bad for a film that echoes a movie beloved by women. -
I've never actually watched Bring It On, but I've seen Top Gun twice now and intend to go again on Tuesday. I am >this< close to finishing the most self indulgently college football thing I have ever written for Rooster/Hangman. I have brain rot.

Speaking of fic, the thing about writing RPF is that when you find yourself in a room with the famous person listening to them talk about their latest book, you spend at least the first five mins hoping they don't have telepathy because you can't stop thinking about the explicit rated Yuletide fic you posted. Anyway, Dan was delightful. If anyone wants a copy of Battling the Big Lie: How Fox, Facebook, and the MAGA Media Are Destroying America I will send you my extra.

Mackie is getting so big, the vet says he'll end up being a big, leggy cat. Everyone is still getting along and playing nice. Dasher accepted the invasion to his bed for exactly as long as it took to snap this pic, and then he was up and gone. I am still Mackie's only cuddle buddy! \0/ )

So after I rehomed 13 - to be an only cat in a nice new house, Gray, my last adult female cat was . . . fine. I worried that she'd pine or try to search for 13 because she always acted concerned when 13 got locked in another room and freaked out or wouldn't come in from outside by herself. (When the roles were reversed 13 never showed any emotion over Gray.) But Gray just kept on keeping on, but I felt bad that she was by herself so much and also I wanted another kitten with the hopes to see them play and be cute like the internet cats.

A typical adult cat is less than pleased with interlopers and often take a couple of weeks to warm up to a new kitten. Gray took 3 days to start playing with him and tolerating some irritating kitten behaviors! I waited until I could get a male kitten raised in a house by multiple people and used to other cats and dogs, so I definitely tried to hedge my bet there. I'm really hoping they'll be pals.

so without further ado, let me introduce Mackie )

It blows my mind that I, a reasonably responsible adult, is allowed to bring this supremely dumb little baby into my home. He got so excited about a piece of bacon last night. Not eating it. No, that would make too much sense. He played with and batted that little piece of bacon around for twenty mins before he left it for the dog.

Had an uneven xmas day. Started out by getting in a fight with the cat I actually like, but she popped back up when I got home and seems to have forgiven me. I mean she peed on my bed, but apparently she's the wounded party.

Dinner went great. I hauled the air fryer to work so one of the guys could hold my hand while I pushed the buttons for the first time. I did both steak and chicken for fajita rice bowls, and it was delicious! We watched the new Matrix, and I liked how meta it was. There was of course nothing going on and no one on campus.

I'd already decided to go home for my two days off, but I was glad I'd already decided when work emailed with bad covid news. I'd just seen my parents a few weeks ago in my town, but I haven't been back to their place in over two years. Is my stepmom such a bad cook that she can very nearly ruin a box of mac&cheese? Yes. The Electrical Life of Louis Wain on Amazon Prime starring Benedict Cumberbatch

"A biographical drama - English artist Louis Wain rises to prominence at the end of the 19th century for his surreal cat paintings that seemed to reflect his declining sanity.

After his father's death, Louis Wain tries to look after his five sisters and his mother as a freelance artist. He is fortunate that Sir William Ingram, editor of the Illustrated London News, offers him a job as an illustrator. His life takes another positive turn when Emily Richardson, the new governess of his sisters, steps into it. She becomes the love of his life, and soon they take in a stray kitten they call Peter. It is unusual in the Victorian era to keep a cat as a pet, and the cat pictures that Louis paints from then on are just as unusual."

I really enjoyed this. It's quirky, it's sad, but the ending is so hopeful.
