chase_acow: bilbo running to adventure in the hobbit (hobbit adventure)

Challenge #6 In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

-I like this one because the obstacles to a happy ending feel real, both internal and external and I love it when characters get in their own way. The antagonism that so very slowly blurs into real affection is so good. For most of you this will basically be original fiction, but I think it still works as just a couple of dudes looking for some love during the scary parts of college with a few complications. Bro Down (56856 words) by Mellow_Yellow
Fandom: Pod Save America (RPF)
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jon Lovett/Tommy Vietor
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - College/University, Alternate Universe - Fraternity, Enemies to Friends to Lovers, Pining, Angst, Hook-Up, Miscommunication
Summary:

Lovett wrenched Tommy’s head down, growling, “Come on, don’t be a fucking baby about it.” Urging Tommy to bite him harder, apparently.

Tommy huffed, exasperated, against the damp skin of Lovett’s neck. “You’re so fucking annoying, christ.”

Lovett tried to kick at him with his pinned knees. “I’m annoying? You smell like beer and you weigh a thousand pounds and all you’re doing is heavy-breathing against my neck.” He tugged on Tommy’s hair again, which felt really good, shit.

“God,” Tommy bit out, skin hot. “You never shut up.”

-Blake is the uber private assistant to the Secretary of State. At the end of the third season he got a great scene coming out as Bi to his friend/boss and a hug in return. This uses the characters really well, but it's also just a very refreshing and honest look at being Bi and choosing who and how to tell for yourself and not for them.

Accompanist (14214 words) by Mosca
Fandom: Madam Secretary
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Blake Moran/Dmitri Petrov
Additional Tags: Bisexuality, Coming Out, Sharing a Bed, Diligent Fingering, Work Family
Summary:

Blake has a Russian spy in his bed, a ton of people to come out to, and the chance to become the leading man in his own story.

-So I was sold with the cultural differences and gender roles hurt every tags - there is some great worldbuilding here. The misunderstandings aren't so farfetched given the differences in culture. I usually don't go for the Bilbo was always female fics, but occasionally I love a secret!baby trope and this one hits my buttons. The pining is great, the adventure is very well planned, and then the recovery back at the mountain is everything I wanted. This was my favorite fic I read last year.

The Seedling (103031 words) by Chrononautical
Fandom: The Hobbit - All Media Types
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Relationships: Bilbo Baggins/Thorin Oakenshield
Additional Tags: Kid Fic, Mutual Pining, Epistolary, Adventure & Romance, Slow Build, Alternate Universe - Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies, Alternate Universe - Always a Different Sex, Female Bilbo Baggins, Dwarf & Hobbit Cultural Differences, Gender Roles Hurt Everyone, The Silmarillion References, and serious exploration of the term halfling
Summary:

In the course of her adventures, Bilbo finds herself pregnant. Without an offer of marriage from Thorin, she returns to the Shire to raise the child with the help of her family.

The King Under the Mountain is heartbroken that Bilbo chooses to leave Erebor, but he cannot blame her. Not after he tried to kill her. There was a time when she would have proposed marriage, but that time is clearly past. If all he can have of her are her letters, then he will be grateful for the missives.

Getting these two to talk just might take divine intervention. Or the intervention of a particularly interested child.

Smut Swap exchange:

Thanks so much for anyone reading this and thinking about writing something for me! I'm really easy, and if you have fun writing whatever then I'll have fun reading whatever. : ) I think the kink tags are a pretty good indicator of what pushes my buttons, so Imma just talk a little bit about why I like the characters and the relationship, and then throw out some prompts which of course are completely optional. Honestly, you're writing a fic in my fandom/pairing so take as much or as little as you need from this letter.

I marked the warnings that I don't mind receiving, so I'm overall good with Graphic Depictions of Violence, Rape/Non-con, Underage, and whether No Archive Warnings Apply. So, that's fine along with all the specific tags associated with each pairing.

Also, I think I added 'Safeword Use' to a lot of places, so obviously, that's a button masher for me, but please don't feel like you have to crowbar it in somewhere. I'm more interested in tapping out because of emotional reasons than physical ones, but I like the dynamic of care involved, and the conflicting emotions in whoever used the word because they like their partner, they like sex, but something somewhere wasn't right.

I don't have a lot of 'do not wants' but I'm not particularly fond of: 1st or 2nd person point of view, unrelenting fluff, pregnancy (for any A/B/O fic, I just imagine that birth control works great, even if they still like to dirty talk about making babies), everyone unrealistically paired off, and mundane alternate universes without a hint of magic/magical realism.

I realized while I was writing that a bunch of these prompts are kind of wanting an 'asshole' character, but even for all that (which I'm apparently in the mood for) I'd like them to be redeemable, to care at least a little bit about their partner in most circumstances.

So, I passed the 10,000 word mark on my Bilbo/Fili epic last week, and right on schedule is the crushing doubt at whether it's any good or anyone will ever read and like it. Progress on it has slowed to crawl. It's just as bad as it was when I was writing The Sanctuary, that fic barely saw the light of day.

I'd also really like to write something for Lupercalia, because it is right up my alley.

8. Post a song that makes you want to write. (Or gets you in the mood to read All Of The Fanfic.)

So right now, it's this song, so I'm writing really angsty snippets of things that will never see the light of day. : (

Though, maybe one of these dumb boys will say something and then everything will be okay? I live in everlasting hope.

6. What's your current fandom love(s) and/or ship(s)?

I mostly live in The Hobbit right now, due to these terrible losers who are going to ruin my life. ->

Thorin/Bilbo comic. )

This pairing is ripe for some of my favorite tropes/kinks: sharing body heat, courting misunderstandings, size difference, power imbalance, arranged marriage, grooming, and grumpy families of choice.

I also still read Derek/Stiles in Teen Wolf but I have not watched the most recent season, and I probably won't watch 3B either. I love the characters and the possibilities but I love the show runner and in universe direction a lot less. I am a little sad to miss out of Cora though.

There's some pairings I still dabble in reading when the right story comes across my flist: Steve/Tony (Avengers)and Sherlock/John (BBC). I wish there was more Mass Effect and Dragon Age I was interested in reading.

I'm also still loving the Doctor Who fandom but I don't ship anyone there.

PS- This is going to take me more than a month. : )
chase_acow: Grace in a cowboy hat from Saving Grace (cowboy grace)
I am all over the place right now. I missed the deadline to finish the DWB fics that I owe [livejournal.com profile] arachne13 and [livejournal.com profile] loverstar. Sorry guys. : ( I got a little blocked, and a little distracted, but I'm working on them so they'll hopefully be finished by the end of the month. I'm having fun working on both, so y'all have a due South/SPN fusion and a S5 AU to look forward to.

I read Change of Heart by Mary Calmes and enjoyed it. As a young gay man—and a werepanther—all Jin Rayne yearns for is a normal life. Having fled his past, he wants nothing more than to start over, but Jin’s old life doesn’t want to let him go.

There's a little more to it than the typical alpha/beta stuff so it held my attention. Jin is an interesting character, and I wish that he could have his own story without all the genre constraints of an m/m romance. Once the tension of the will they or won't they passed, I did get a little less enthused, but the ending does clip along. The romance has a couple of twists but unfortunately does end up pretty typically. I thought it wouldn't fall into the cliche of dominate/submissive = masculine/feminine but all the build up came crashing back down after the main characters fell into bed. It's still worth a read if you're into the were-genre.

My problem with mating, bonding, or whatever you call it, especially in were-stories. . . )

Joe Flanigan poster/banner for sale on ebay. There's about a day left in the auction, and I'd love to get it off my hands.

I still have the 2 Gold Tickets to the SPN LA con if anyone is interested.

I just watched Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog for the first time. I don't even know how I feel. I loved it though, and I need to download the soundtrack! : )

Also. Mark Sanchez. Who knew?
