chase_acow: The Muppets Animal ringing the triangle (random animal triangle)

- JD Vance, attempting to justify his criticism of people without children, after calling them 'childless cat ladies'.

This man really is so weird. Gif is from the newsletter What A Day put out on weekdays by Crooked Media and it's free if you're interested. My favorite part is the Light at the End of the Email where it's just good news. Sometimes I skip straight to it if I'm tired of whatever is going on.

Crooked Media is giving out a free month trial of their Friend of the Pod status which gets you ad free listens to all the podcasts and subscriber only pods including the two I'm interested in Pollercoaster (smart people decipher what the polls mean) and Terminally Online (unprepared dum-dums talk about internet nonsense).

I impulse bought some candles off an instagram add with 10% off, so of course they're doing 25% off now. I'm a little mad. But they are cool. Shy Wolf Candles does tarot and rock song inspired scents. I bought - Thunderstruck, Whole Lotta Love, Tiny Dancer, and Death.
chase_acow: Sam Wilson on a blue background text is "kiss my ass" (fatws sam kiss his ass)
I saw several links to articles about this book, guy, and topic, but I didn't click on any of them. I was excited then when Offline did a podcast with him and it's interesting and some good advice about thinking about relationships. I especially enjoyed about halfway through when they're talking about maintaining relationships and how to think about getting over the inertia of life (or any other barriers) to go make plans with friends.

Dr. Robert Waldinger, Director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development, joins Offline to talk about his new book “The Good Life: Lessons From the Longest Study on Happiness.” Bob and Jon discuss how close relationships are the secret to a fulfilling life, why technology can make us lonelier, and what 84 years of data teach us about coming together and growing apart.

I will apologize for that first ad read. They are kinda stuck on 'back of the throat' jokes.

Speaking of plans with friends, now that I'm on day shift and I have Fri/Sat off for the first time ever, I have the chance to go do things with people. There was no easing in period. Last week I went to Broken Arrow to see friends. We went to brunch and shopped a little in the Rose District. They have big rooster statues. Then we went back to M's house and did trivia for fun and non-profit. I really enjoyed it and didn't feel like I'd wasted a chance to rest on my day off, so I hope I continue to push through the inertia.

My brother called last Sunday pulling that whole 'I'm a terrible brother, I'm so sorry I haven't called, hey do you want to do something this weekend?' and somehow not only did I get talked into going to see Avatar, a movie I did not want to see, but also, I had to find a theater still playing it in 2D at a time when ancient uncle Larry (not really an uncle to me, but is to brother) can go, and buy the tickets. Fine. I'm going to spend all day down in the city now so that I have some fun. Museum first, then I found a hoity toity restaurant where it is easy to order out from (I am excited about the tuna tartare!), gonna take that food to a park at the lake, then go up to the mall where the theater is, shop a bit, then meet the boys. Sadly drive through the scary traffic in the dark on the way home.

Top Gun: Maverick is turning serious adult men into fangirls – not bad for a film that echoes a movie beloved by women. -
I've never actually watched Bring It On, but I've seen Top Gun twice now and intend to go again on Tuesday. I am >this< close to finishing the most self indulgently college football thing I have ever written for Rooster/Hangman. I have brain rot.

Speaking of fic, the thing about writing RPF is that when you find yourself in a room with the famous person listening to them talk about their latest book, you spend at least the first five mins hoping they don't have telepathy because you can't stop thinking about the explicit rated Yuletide fic you posted. Anyway, Dan was delightful. If anyone wants a copy of Battling the Big Lie: How Fox, Facebook, and the MAGA Media Are Destroying America I will send you my extra.

I laughed so hard at this commercial - pubes song )

Mackie is getting so big, the vet says he'll end up being a big, leggy cat. Everyone is still getting along and playing nice. Dasher accepted the invasion to his bed for exactly as long as it took to snap this pic, and then he was up and gone. I am still Mackie's only cuddle buddy! \0/ )

How do you style your pizza? With a comb over?

I made a side tumblr to reblog all the things that might one day come in handy while writing. General advice and fantasy/sci-fi stuff mostly. It's chaseawritingpost

Speaking of tumblr, I really enjoyed this post about hanahaki disease and how a few tweaks can change the trope so much.

Offline with Jon Favreau has become another favorite podcast. He's just kind of a joyful voice even when the news is bad. I mean as a kid his favorite dinosaur was the brontosaurus because he didn't like carnivore conflict. He's had some really interesting conversations with comedians, journalists, and scientists.

I really enjoyed this episode with Dr Anna Lembke - Dr. Anna Lembke, Stanford Psychiatrist and author of “Dopamine Nation,” joins Jon to talk how smartphones, social media, and the internet have fundamentally changed the way our brains process pleasure. Making the case that phones are similarly addictive to alcohol, tobacco, and drugs, she teaches Jon how we can reset our brains to have a healthier relationship with our phones and the world around us.

Exchange wise, I'm looking forward to [community profile] multifandomdoodle (nomination stage) and [personal profile] summerofhorrorexchange (signup stage)

Writing wise, I think the big word count goal for [community profile] getyourwordsout is having the opposite than desired effect on my writing/finishing habits. I'm behind, but not so much that I couldn't catch up, but I'm feeling so resistant to writing because I'm such an instant editor and I haven't yet found a way to count all the words I write without subtracting the words I delete. I write a lot of things I then need to delete for clarity or an active voice and it feels like wasted time? Even though I know it's not. I'd happily take any thoughts/ideas/comments about this issue of mine.

Saving America didn't end with getting Donald Trump out of the White House.

Anti-democratic forces in the Republican Party are hard at work trying to take away your right to be heard. Defeating them won’t be easy, but we’ve beaten them before, and we can do it again. We have something they don’t: You. For the last five years, your hard work has paid off in close races across the country and we can’t let up this year. If we start earlier and work harder, we can win again.

Basically you sign up with your zipcode to get sorted into you region and they'll email you monthly about how you can help get out the vote and help democrats across all levels of government. This month has Voter ID Month of Action: Letter Writing events on Wednesdays with VoteRiders. Every little bit helps, and it's not a competition totally a competition and the South is gonna win! There's a chance to get some Crooked Media swag, and mostly just the peace of mind of doing a little bit that might make a difference somewhere.

Thank you for your previous attention to politics talk, as a reward, here is a kitty! )

So I spent some time cleaning out the freezer, and I clearly had/have good intentions of eating the fish but little to no follow through. Alas for my liver enzymes.

After 15ish years of fear and anticipation, it finally happened. The Community Band f-ed up the Star Spangled Banner. It was glorious. The fear and desperation on the director's face is a thing not soon forgotten. I'm still not entirely sure what happened, but there were a couple of different tempos going on until about the middle when we all wisely decided to go with the percussion. I take very little credit as I always skip the first measure due to fear of fracking out before anyone else.

I enjoyed the Crooked Media folks doing a draft based on their ideas of the most patriotic songs. I laughed hard at the two sports nerds having to explain to the gay nerds what a snake draft is. They picked some good ones . . . and some odd ones. And Fanfare for the Common Man clearly wins.

Anthony Mackie is hosting the ESPYS on July 10th. Now I just have to figure out how to watch it.

This seems like it would be of interest to some of y'all. I haven't listened to any yet, but I intend to. Historical Fiction Podcast ‘Edith!’ Stars Rosamund Pike as Former First Lady

1. I signed up for Wellness Coaching through my work . . . and I'm not sure I'm getting the most I can out of it. I'm unsure what I should be asking or leading us through. The first session my goals were to try asparagus again (it's still the grossest thing ever) and try to be more active at work instead of sitting straight through. This last section, she asked me where my vision for wellness would leave me in the future, and idk, I thought we covered that before - I want to be self sufficient (which I guess means the upper body/back strength to move and/or lift anything in my house) and I want to go camping (which maybe means I want to lose a little bit of weight so that sleeping on the floor doesn't kill my back). She gave me a wellness wheel. I hate the wellness wheel.

Challenge #6 In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

-I like this one because the obstacles to a happy ending feel real, both internal and external and I love it when characters get in their own way. The antagonism that so very slowly blurs into real affection is so good. For most of you this will basically be original fiction, but I think it still works as just a couple of dudes looking for some love during the scary parts of college with a few complications. Bro Down (56856 words) by Mellow_Yellow
Fandom: Pod Save America (RPF)
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jon Lovett/Tommy Vietor
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - College/University, Alternate Universe - Fraternity, Enemies to Friends to Lovers, Pining, Angst, Hook-Up, Miscommunication
Summary:

Lovett wrenched Tommy’s head down, growling, “Come on, don’t be a fucking baby about it.” Urging Tommy to bite him harder, apparently.

Tommy huffed, exasperated, against the damp skin of Lovett’s neck. “You’re so fucking annoying, christ.”

Lovett tried to kick at him with his pinned knees. “I’m annoying? You smell like beer and you weigh a thousand pounds and all you’re doing is heavy-breathing against my neck.” He tugged on Tommy’s hair again, which felt really good, shit.

“God,” Tommy bit out, skin hot. “You never shut up.”

-Blake is the uber private assistant to the Secretary of State. At the end of the third season he got a great scene coming out as Bi to his friend/boss and a hug in return. This uses the characters really well, but it's also just a very refreshing and honest look at being Bi and choosing who and how to tell for yourself and not for them.

Accompanist (14214 words) by Mosca
Fandom: Madam Secretary
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Blake Moran/Dmitri Petrov
Additional Tags: Bisexuality, Coming Out, Sharing a Bed, Diligent Fingering, Work Family
Summary:

Blake has a Russian spy in his bed, a ton of people to come out to, and the chance to become the leading man in his own story.

-So I was sold with the cultural differences and gender roles hurt every tags - there is some great worldbuilding here. The misunderstandings aren't so farfetched given the differences in culture. I usually don't go for the Bilbo was always female fics, but occasionally I love a secret!baby trope and this one hits my buttons. The pining is great, the adventure is very well planned, and then the recovery back at the mountain is everything I wanted. This was my favorite fic I read last year.

The Seedling (103031 words) by Chrononautical
Fandom: The Hobbit - All Media Types
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Relationships: Bilbo Baggins/Thorin Oakenshield
Additional Tags: Kid Fic, Mutual Pining, Epistolary, Adventure & Romance, Slow Build, Alternate Universe - Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies, Alternate Universe - Always a Different Sex, Female Bilbo Baggins, Dwarf & Hobbit Cultural Differences, Gender Roles Hurt Everyone, The Silmarillion References, and serious exploration of the term halfling
Summary:

In the course of her adventures, Bilbo finds herself pregnant. Without an offer of marriage from Thorin, she returns to the Shire to raise the child with the help of her family.

The King Under the Mountain is heartbroken that Bilbo chooses to leave Erebor, but he cannot blame her. Not after he tried to kill her. There was a time when she would have proposed marriage, but that time is clearly past. If all he can have of her are her letters, then he will be grateful for the missives.

Getting these two to talk just might take divine intervention. Or the intervention of a particularly interested child.
chase_acow: Golden Girls quote "I mean deceit, then theft, isn't murder the next logical step?" (gg murder)

I got the vaccine today. I barely felt the needle and so far so good on any side effects. There was a little bit of paperwork and then they had us hang out for 15 mins to see about any allergies. Since they did my department all at once, we were having a pretty good time seeing each other all together instead of like ships passing in the almost night.

I say my department, but I didn't see any of the more right wingers down there. I'm not saying I hope they regret it (though I kinda do), but I will hope nobody else regrets their selfish and ignorant choice.

This will probably turn out to be the next snowflake challenge or something, but I wanted to rec one of the many newsletters I get. What A Day is a nightly round up of most of the meaningful US stories. It's informative and it is flat out funny.

And sometimes, they have fun images like this - The transition is going well. )

It's part of Crooked Media - the folks that do Pod Save America. It's split up into different sections, and sometimes when I'm already too weary of the news I just skip down to the "Is that hope?" section and feel a tad bit better about the world. It ends with a "You survived today!" award, and listen I don't care how cheesy, I like it.

Here is the most recent edition.
