Transformative Works Policy

You want to create fan works based on stories I have written? OMG, that's awesome!!! Feel free to remix a fic, write a sequel, create fan art, or podfic my works. I'd ask you to credit the original work that inspired yours and that you link back to it. I'd also love the chance to check it out!
Podfic: if any small modifications to the words/dialog are needed to make it flow better, that's fine with me.

ABOUT ME
Hello friends and enemies. I write things (I'm trying a habit goal of writing for 300 days this year at @getyourwordsout). I tinker with graphics- while I'll never be great at it, I do enjoy it.
I try to make posts that have links, videos, or pics to make them look interesting.
I am/was super into US politics but I wish I wasn't, and am definitely taking a step back for the year. I'll come back to help with the midterms. I rarely post about politics, but I'm up for good faith questions/discussions.
I play the trombone in my local community band!
I have four inside cats, and one who declared herself an outside cat and bitterly complains when I bring her in during bad weather. There's another stray who discovered her food and now hangs around. I keep trying to get him into TNR clinic, but I think he'd also make a good inside pet for someone else. Maybe I can get Animal Welfare to take him soon.
I'll try to talk about anything!

So here's a roundup of where you can find me.

I add people to my circle whenever I see posts I'm interested in. I try to comment, but sometimes I'm not great. So I totally understand random friending and lurkers. No big deal around here. On the other hand if you're a talker, excellent! My schedule isn't always the most consistent and I don't log on at work, but I have lost my last fuck and am now clicking any link I want to at work. I try want to reply as much as possible.

I really thought I was going to get to march triumphant back into posting in September, clutching a new job the way a child half strangles their first fuzzy pet. I got through three interviews and checks on all my references, an extra week of waiting because the hiring manager had a funeral, only to be told they were going with the other candidate.

They could/wouldn't give any feedback for anything I could do better.

It took four weeks and a handful of job applications that didn't even lead to a first interview to pull myself out of a depression pit.

Got a couple of interviews for a job with HR, someone important reached out to them on my behalf (my one and only attempt at networking), they weren't interested in my references, they picked someone else. They also could/wouldn't give any feedback on any part of the process I could tweak to do better next time.

I figured that was really my one shot and I still couldn't get over the finish line.

Did an interview with a job I didn't want and the red flags were everywhere. I worried about making a choice to exchange one hell for another. I don't even know why. They kicked me out of the hiring pool with a form letter.

I wallowed for another several weeks.

I am now mostly getting up before noon, I'm on a 13 day walking streak, and I have three buckets of protein under the sink to use with the shiny new blender Santa gave me for fruity smoothies.

2026 is looking up?
chase_acow: The Muppets Animal ringing the triangle (random animal triangle)
Thought I might be having some sort of cardiac related unpleasantness on Friday night, so I did what any debt fearing American would do and waited until Monday morning to call my nurse practitioner for my covered yearly check-up. They managed to squeeze me in today and after talking about my symptoms, how my heart rate still hadn't regulated back down to normal, and everything going on with my job, we settled on it probably being a several days long eruption of all the anxiety and stress I've been shoving down for so long. So I went and got some beta blockers and a low dose serotonin and we'll see what happens.

I am once again applying to literally everything at my university I think I could do a remotely good job at and will keep these freeloaders in kibble and wet food.

I enjoyed the movie Ballerina a lot. The fight scene using only the grenade belt was fun.

I suffered the movie 28 Years Later. It was a trailer bait and switch.

Glen Powell's new movie dropped a trailer. I enjoyed the first Running Man, and this one somehow looks just as, if differently, unhinged. I borrowed the book from the library and hopefully this weekend will be dead at work so I can read it.

I never know if anything or anyone is actually popular, but I saw this Anthony Hurd's art because his book it coming out, and I just love everything. He does some really interesting surrealism in his i was born in a gay bar show and his dark optimism series. Also, he does some really good cacti.

But mostly my attention turned to his most recent work and the content of his book. He arts queer cowboys that include men in dresses, bipoc, and older men. It's really colorful, I love the blocking, and everything feels so tender. You can decide if it's tender like a bruise or not.

Gay Dreaming. There are several galleries if you back out to his main site.

and ended up spilling eye juice all over the place when my relief came in. It was definitely a feeling of helplessness at being poorly positioned to support my shift, pre-anxiety for a meeting on Thursday where I need to bring up issues and try to resolve them on behalf of my department with the big boss, an overreaction to a new officer who is of the old school gentleman class of casual touch, and then an embarrassment loop because I freaked out when he touched my back as we passed through a narrow spot in the stations and somehow it is now documented in his training file that he was reprimanded for not keeping his hands to himself. And like . . . you shouldn't touch people you don't know very well, but now it feels like my freakiness is on display for everyone to see. And if the LT comes down and tries to peer support me tomorrow, I'm gonna lose my shit.

I am a person, who in the past and apropos of nothing, started to daydream about how to get out of theralpy if an alien civilization showed up and I could save the world if I finished a session so they could know me completely. The world is doomed.

The Big Bad Wolf series by Charlie Adhara is available on Kindle Unlimited. And yeah, Amazon is bad, my public library system/Libby doesn't have the widest selection of m/m, and I love these books. The main character is an emotionally constipated porcupine who is trying to be better for the love of his life. The mysteries are so good, the clues are all there for you to figure out if it's your jam, and otherwise there's always a satisfying reveal. Anyway I think I've pushed these on y'all before, but I love them, I bought the ebooks, and if they were available in print, I'd buy those too.

I've also been drowning in nostalgia and reading all the old Valdemar books I loved in my childhood, but that's another post once I've finished the Storm books.

Baseball:Want to start watching baseball and not sure which team to pick? Here's how we found the Ultimate Bandwagon Team of 2025!

And I'd like to see this movie, though it looks like a total brofest, set in the 90s about one last baseball game for the fellas before their diamond gets demolished. Not for a mall or some other corporate bad guy, but for a public school that will benefit the whole community. - An eephus pitch is unnaturally slow, aiming to confuse the batter. “Stays in the air forever,” the player explains. “You get bored watching it. I get bored.” It makes the batter “lose track of time,” he concludes. “It’s pretty mean that way.” “Eephus,” a movie in which nothing really happens but many things occur nonetheless.

Movie: I went to see My Dead Friend Zoe staring Sonequa Martin-Green (I really like her in Star Trek Discovery and I think she's so pretty) with a little bit of Morgan Freeman (group counselor) and Ed Harris (grandpa just diagnosed with alzheimer's). I cried through like the whole thing for various reasons, laughed more than a little bit at the meet-cute, and really liked the ending. It's grief and it's super messy, and it is a tragedy based on true circumstance.

Inspired by a true story, a U.S. Army Afghanistan veteran—thanks to the presence of her dead best friend from the Army—is at odds with her estranged Vietnam Veteran grandfather and her VA counselor. )

EMERGENCY: My town is battling fires and yesterday sustained wind gusting up to 80mph. The other side from my house - which I'm just so lucky for since I slept through when their mandatory evacuations started. I woke up at 8:45pm to a handful of messages checking to see if I was okay which was when I realized it was smoke I smelled from in my bedroom. The outside cats were super spooked and actually demanded to come inside. I told them I wasn't sure it was safer, but it wasn't like I was gonna tell them 'no'.

Went into work early at 10 to replace my boss who was finally headed home after 14hrs, the roads were super hazy and their were a bunch of damage from the wind. I figured I might as well get overtime and have more information if I was going to be stuck in a heightened anxiety loop anyway. The lake we manage, which has a decent permanent population, was under a mandatory evacuation order so the officers were going tent to camper to cabin to warn everybody (there's only one road in and it was in danger of being blocked) and a handful of people refused to leave and were told that there was not enough resources and help would not be able to come for them if they changed their mind later. It was brutal.

The wind is less now at 6:30am and it changed direction so hopefully any flying embers land back in previously burnt areas.

Movie: I fucking loved The Monkey. I did not watch any trailers, had no expectations, had to ignore obnoxious loudness by the other folks in the theater, and I was absolutely into it. I'm not entirely sure how to describe what it actually was. Not a horror movie - but a couple jump scares. A super dark family dram-com? Gory for sure. Somehow uplifting. Hilarious. Thoughtful. Surprising. I enjoyed both Adam Scott and Elijah Wood in their small roles. perfect.

TV: I just need to shout into the void about how much I dislike the new rookies this season on The Rookie. )

Work: Our rookie put in her two week notice when she decided she was unwilling to work any shift but day shift in a job with mandatory 24/7 operation and a three month rotation so nobody goes stir crazy while on overnights. . . . Good riddance. I was already betting against her making it through fall. Defensive and unwilling to try when she didn't get the right answer the first time she tried. Also a lot of petty personal junk I won't get into. I did not appreciate the trauma dump during the first week, and most her problems were created by herself.

Reading: I finished The Teller of Small Fortunes By Julie Leong
summary )

I'd say this book is atypical of my reading. It's cozy. Nice characters make nice choices and band together against outside conflict. I'm sure it's somebody's wheelhouse, but I finished it! I enjoyed the cat.

Writing: I'm trying to get into a Cabin in the Woods/Empyrean series mash up from the adult teacher's POV. Zero narrative words, and idk a page and half of notes.

Watching: Somehow I got sucked into the gameshow The Floor? IDK either. It's fine I guess.
9-1-1: Lone Star finished and before the finale I had a dream that the entire show was a spin off from The Good Place and Owen was the architect in the system trying to guide the others to better choices so they could make it to their Good Place. The actual show was fine, but mine was better. : )
It's a good thing High Potential was already picked up for a second season, because that last episode was rushed and I'm not into that big of a cliff hanger for between seasons. I did get super obsessed with Daniel Sunjata though, and am now slowly making my way through Graceland.

Weather: 5/6th of my water pipes are frozen so you'd better believe I am babying the cold water in my bathroom. This was the week I was supposed to be able to teach the 40 hr basic course to our newbies all at once and instead we are all stuck at home typing through Teams. Thanks, I hate it, even if I do get to wear my sweatpants all day.

Cats:The outside not-my-cat is desperate to go back outside even though I have explained windchill several times now.
I bought an automatic litter box and one out of these six bastards is consistently using it. Two more are obsessed with it and I think they jump in and out just to watch it move. I still have hope a couple more will warm up to it, and then I'll buy another and only have two boxes to scoop.

This was the first time in years that I was home and trying to sleep on New Year's Eve. The joke is every dispatch is the people who call in gunshots and we roll our eyes, remind them it's NYE or the Fourth of July or a football game and ask if maybe it's possible what they heard was fireworks. Guys.

GUYS.

I was rudely awakened from a sound sleep and my very first thought was OMG, GUNSHOTS. It was not gunshots. Hi, it's me, I'm the problem it's me. (Though if I was going to murder somebody those two dates would be my go to.)

FAVORITE TV SHOW: Matlock -> but probably only because True Detective with Jodie Foster was so long ago?
I love Kathy Bates. She is fantastic and she gets some absolutely meaty scenes in this series which has some great layers. You get the same country sounding older person making everyone who underestimates them look so foolish, but you ALSO get the season-long con arc. It's funny and poignant, the cases are interesting, and I'm rooting for all the secondary characters who are fleshed out enough that I am interested in their lives away from the law firm.

The holidays don't really mean much except it's a chance to double my paycheck. My family never really fostered the traditions that bring up the nostalgia and regret to miss them. I remember a bunch of meaningless presents and my grandad always making someone cry. I remember being really uncomfortable and bored with the adults.

I like Santa. I love putting up tinsel and lights. I hate cooking/baking/stirring, but I definitely enjoy eating the chex mix, cheese ball, and whatever else I end up not ruining with my sad culinary skills. My savory apple hand pies did not work out this year.

Happy Saturnalia! Io!

My car battery went kaput. It acted funny last night so I took it in and Autozone confirmed it was bad, but also that they wouldn't replace it because part of the air filter goes over the battery and they weren't allowed to pull it out. This morning it was totally dead, and being my day off, I called into work to see if they'd send someone over to jump me. Running again, I drove across town to double check if O'Reilly would give me the same answer.

And thus began the hilarity. )

I don't have a lot to add to add of the 'Best of' lists everyone does around this time of year, but here's what I got!

BEST MOVIE: Love Lies Bleeding
Love Lies Bleeding is a 2024 romantic thriller film directed by Rose Glass from a screenplay she co-wrote with Weronika Tofilska, and starring Kristen Stewart, Katy O'Brian, Jena Malone, Anna Baryshnikov, Dave Franco, and Ed Harris. Set in 1989, the film's plot follows the lesbian relationship between a reclusive gym manager, who is part of a crime family, and an ambitious bodybuilder who gets wrapped up in organized crime.
And the last ten minutes gets real, real weird in the best way.

- honorable mention: Hit Man I probably would have liked it better in the theater, but the ending bummed me out. A++ until the last ten minutes.

BEST THING I DID: Stop ignoring the small irritants that didn't seem bad enough to do something about any of the hundreds times they annoyed me.
- Bought new athletic shorts for the first time in a decade. Guess what? Every trip to take the trash to the curb is no longer a roulette game of whether they'll fall down and flash my neighbors.
- I stuck a command hook on the wall next to my bathtub because I couldn't reach the towel hanging up top and if I left it on the toilet or ground a cat butt would inevitably arrive. But now it's right there!

The backstory:

My older brother is 46, five years older than me. We're both loners, and we've never actually lived under the same roof together for any amount of time so we both feel like only children. We never had a good relationship. He's a man child who doesn't take responsibility and has a mean sense of humor that punches down.

For lack of anything better to do, he joined the Air Force did his stint and then used the experience to get a cushy government job doing maintenance at an airport. He was about five years away from being able to retire there when he suddenly decided he was going to move back to the armpit of OK to start his own pilot car business.

Sure.

drugs, arrests, etc )

And that should have been that, except that my stepmom has been yearning for family photos. She has two kids and they have families with a bunch of grandkids. I think she's worried my brother is going to prison (I highly doubt it for a first offense if he'll just get his shit together.) and this is her last chance. So okay, I'm still exhausted from the previous outing to Silver Dollar City, but I'll try my best despite my non-photogenic face.

My brother, however, was awkward to the point of hilarity, stand offish and vaping like someone really sad he couldn't put something up his nose. About halfway through she asked if I thought it would be okay to try to get a pic with me and him, and I said I'd try. He grumbled and stomped his way over, and then under his breath threatened to punch me if I tried to touch him. I resisted the intrusive voice trying to get me to call his bluff, and we took terrible unusable pics.

Families are exhausting, why are we writing so many found family tropes? Let loners eat crackers in their single recliner they positioned in the middle of their living room right in front of the TV. <- yes, this is a self portrait. : )

I took my mom and her partner to Silver Dollar City in Branson, MO for the holiday lights last week. It was . . . a time. : ) We all really enjoyed stopping at Top of the Rock for the golf cart nature trail and museum on Wednesday. It would have been a little pricy probably for the value, but Carl's a Vietnam vet and we got the whole thing for half off.

pics I did not take, and were probably doctored, but are still pretty )

We went to Cheddar's where I was disappointed in my steak. there is a theme

Thursday we were going to go to the 14 inch pancake place, but it was stuffed and packed past full, and Carl didn't want to wait. I mean, mom and I didn't really want to either, but unfortunately, then I had to drive us to Cracker Barrel. I bought a bag of super long twizzlers, however breakfast was a disappointment.

Then we went junk store shopping. Fine.

THEN it was Silver Dollar City time. My plan the whole time was to bounce from food place to food place, order whatever holiday thing they had and share it between the three of us so no one got stuffed but we'd get to try a bunch of stuff. We started with a funnel cake, and mom wanted the cheesecake chocolate one . . . fine I guess, I wanted the gingerbread or red velvet, but I'm easy going. I think the cake broke my mom, because of course it's a big plateful and Carl decided he didn't want even a bite. So I'm only eating the gooey fantastic bits and then I'm ready to throw the rest away. But it was a lot to throw away and mom got it in her head that we were going to be spending way too much money just to throw most of it away. So I didn't get to try anything else of the tasty stuff I'd investigated online. Fine. I guess.

They did about an hour long musical rendition of A Christmas Carol which was really pretty okay. But it was so loud I ended up with a headache that followed for the rest of the day.

The "funny" show was super lame. But it was the fun kind of super lame? At least until the vaguely amusing and really dumb show ground to a halt so one of the women dressed as an old timey saloon girl could tell me about her lord and savior, drone a bible verse, and lead the crowd in Joy to the World. The intrusive voice in my head wanted to yell "Hail Satan! I mean, Santa, I'm dyslexic!" but I resisted. I should have expected the overtly religious parts of the show/city/decorations, but I didn't and it was a bit of a shock to my little secular heart.

For similar reasons, we skipped the Living Nativity.

Ate at their BBQ place. It was disappointing.

The lights were so good! And we got hot chocolate with the works for toppings and it was delicious!

Carl did not want to stay for the kid's parade and honestly I was pretty done.

I am very glad I never have to do it again.

On Friday, the only thing Carl had asked to do was to go to this restaurant Flaming Margaritas. It sounds like a fun place, right? You look it up on Facebook and it's a vibrant, hip place where people are having fun and the food looks good and big Mexican fair. There's no way I could be disappointed, right? Right?!? Unfortunately that was the older location. They wanted to go to the new location on the Landing. This place is beige on beige on beige. It is not fun and hip and it has tacos, but they were lame. I ended up with a surf and turf burger that was way over cooked and pretty bland.

Alas I was cursed the entire trip to sad food choices. I got home Friday night and ordered my favorite chicken and waffles from Hatch for breakfast on Saturday morning to make up for it.

I went to work on Saturday, and then drove to the other family Sunday, still exhausted and over peopled. But this is part 2 and requires background about my brother's arrest for coke in the early summer.
chase_acow: the elf from the Rudolph cartoon reading a book titled "PORN" (winter porn)
So like always when I feel guilty and embarrassed that I was supposed to do something and couldn't do it, I retreat away from posting anything. You know, why do I have time to do this, but not that other thing?!? Trying to get in the habit of giving myself the same grace I'd give others. I go back to work tomorrow after a roller-coaster of five days off, and I plan to finish out the couple of [community profile] ficortreat surprises I still have outstanding.

My college football team is 3-6 and if I had to take a guess is going to miss going to a bowl game for the first time in 18 years. The coach is an ignorant piece of trash who complained that anyone complaining about this year's team is probably a failure at home and can't pay their bills. He offered up a shitty insincere apology the next day. We're never going to be rid of him because he's successful enough but such a whiny asshole in front of the media that no one else will hire him away. We pay him a shit ton so I'm not holding my breath on a buy out.

I gave up reading Jeff Vandermeer's new book Absolution - a prequel of sorts to the Southern Reach trilogy. The first part with the biologists was fine, but I do not care about Old Jim in the least and caught myself skimming trying to get to the good weird bits before I gave up and returned it to Libby. I'll try again later.

I am reading Scratch the Surface by Mary Calmes and enjoying it quite a bit. It's m/m love at first fuck, but as individual characters they are fleshed out, quirky people, who are not just interchangeable because they (unlike a bunch of these boilerplate romance books) actually have personalities. So their romance is a nice steady march toward trusting each other, and then the weirdest and most outlandish things happen to one of the characters to keep the pace and plot(?) going. IDEK but I like the two boys and I'm cheering for their happily ever after.

and then there's the orange fucking elephant in the room )
