So, I tried to go to the opening College Republicans meeting tonight and made it as far as the poster that was set up to attract the unwary. There in big block letters – "Pro-Life" "Defend Marriage" "Support the Troops!" (not that I don't support the troops, because I do, but why should that be a republican come-on?) – and I got kinda angry. I had a vision of handing out McCain bumper stickers, and realized that I wouldn't be able to live with myself. Then, I accidentally checked out the chick (which I do occasionally though never in much seriousness) walking up the escalator and knew I was in the wrong place.

I still think I'm a republican, I can't quite give away the label yet because there's just as many things the dems do that I don't agree with. I'm just sick of party politics. Maybe I'll try to check out the Young Dems next week and see if I do any better.

Regarding Stargate: Universe, I am cautiously optimistic. I really enjoyed ST: VOY, and I always thought that SGA was more compelling, in canon and fic, when they were cut off from Earth. I think I'll enjoy a younger cast and influences into the story arcs. JoeF, Ben, Michael, and David are all very nice to look at, but I do like 'em a little closer to my own age too.

I am not really behind [livejournal.com profile] amireal's advert campaign. Instead, I like what [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn had to say here. Defriend me if you need to, but I don't plan to make a big deal out of anything. I'd like to be fannish about the new series, but it's a long way away.

I'm still drowning under a pile of papers and readings. I would really like an August redo. Please?

Re: 1.) I never really liked the idea of partisan politics. I have my own impression of what government is for and what it is not for, what stance to take on what issues, and which issues are of most importance to ms. I don't need a "party" to tell me which way to go. There are things from each party that I might agree with, things that I don't, but in the end I tend to side with the Democrats if only because they stand closer to my stance on the issues that matter to me. Really, I see the Republican Party as warmongering, corporate-owned elitists who intentionally drive social classes farther and farther apart all while telling everyone exactly how they need to live their lives, and the Democrat Party as spineless, cow-towing whiners who are too busy trying to be liked by everyone that they never get anything done. That's party; not individuals. That negative outlook might also have to do with my dislike for politics in general. And me being a misanthrope. :-/

Re: 2.) I'll be willing to checkout Universe, but to quote everybody in Star Wars "I have a bad feeling." I think it's a wasted explanation of the ninth chevron, even if it sets up for an interesting series theme, i.e. lost in the far reaches of the universe. I'm not so much complaining about the change in demographic, especially when you think how young Michael Shanks and Amanda Tapping were when SG1 started. It's possible it could have an air of Star Trek Voyager. I'm hoping for more of a Starship Troopers: The Lost Battalion feel. Campy but not cheesy.

1.) Obama sucked me in a little bit with his talk of crossing party lines (or whatever ever he said that has since been sucked out of my brain), but I think the shiney's worn off a little bit now. I should never have gotten my undergrad in PolySci. I mean, the idea of politics, government, and leadership is irresistible to me, but then reality comes crashing back down. Seriously, millions of people and we have to choose between those two? It's just not a very attractive choice.

2.) I have a hard time believing campy SG. I think I'd like it more, but it's like the writers aren't willing to commit so they end of straddling the fence of Serious Scifi and Campy Romp. One or the other would be fine, but as it is, SGA has usually always left me wanting more, but not in the good way. I didn't think about SG-1 being on for ten years adding a decade onto the actors. That's a good point.

Am also cautiously optimistic. I love McKay and Sheppard and might always, but that didn't stop me from loving Daniel and Cam and Jack, or Sam and Dean, or whatever else. So even though I'm sad about SGA, this could turn out okay in the end.

McKay and Sheppard are awesome characters. I'll probably always read fic about them. Fans shouldn't have to be exclusive, I just saw so much hate for SGU last week that I got a little sad. What if it's awesome? Or if it's not, what if fandom could write awesome fic to fix it? I'd hate for people to miss out on that.

Right, exactly! I'm willing to try pretty much everything (er, in terms of fannish activities) at least once to see if it is awesome. I'd hate to miss out if it was, and if it's not, well, that's why there are buttons on the remote, and back buttons on internet browsers. I don't think we have to love SGU but we could, and I'd rather check it out before condemning it.

I actually find both parties a pain in my rear.

Full disclosure: I was raised democratic and quite liberal. I actually dislike the democratic party and if my state actually had parties other than democratic and republican, I wouldn't be a registered Democrat. I don't love Obama, and I have numerous problems with McCain.

I find that the people who are in the young dems and young republicans are among the worst b/c they are part of the cult thing that has taken over politics in America.

And with regards to your second point, if someone defriends you b/c you're going to wait and see what SG:Universe is, then they are just silly. I don't know if I'll see it and I know I'm not going to give money to amireal, b/c I don't think it will work, but I'm also not going to stress about it.

You're probably right about the membership qualities of the college groups. I'm on a mission to find some kind of niche on campus though, and I'd do just about anything to network for the chance at a job. I was raised Republican, but the older I get the more I realize that I didn't get the full picture of either side. I like to pick and choose between issues, but that leaves me standing in the middle.

Well, it's no fun when your show gets axed, and I haven't been invested in SGA for awhile. So, if they feel like SGU is the reason SGA was canceled (which it might be, but I think the SG PTB are just on the bad kind of crack), then there might be some hard feelings. A lot of fangirls aren't big with the rational after all, myself included. : )
