Daniel has some choices to make.
Daniel hadn’t done anything constructive in days, not since Sheppard’s team had gone out. He had taken to wandering through deserted hallways of lower Atlantis that they hadn’t opened up to the full population yet. The quiet and solitude gave him ample time to think, or more truthfully, to brood over the current state of his affairs.
While Jack would have been proud that Daniel had campaigned in sabotage, he wasn’t sure that he was. In the absence of both Sheppard and Cameron, his faceless ambush strikes seemed juvenile and reckless to what his final goal was. He should have just talked to them, asked Cameron what had changed between them and come clean about his feelings. He hoped that it wasn’t too late, and vowed to catch them as soon as they were back.
Then they didn’t come back.
Looking around the gate room, Daniel was grateful he wasn’t the only one loitering, waiting for news, as the soft conversations helped keep him grounded. They had made their check-ins with no problem, but it was nearing twenty-three hours with no contact since they were due back and at twenty-four Dr Weir was sending in a rescue team. He had balked at the delay, but Elizabeth had spent precious time to assure him that it was the best compromise she and Sheppard could make between military and civilian counterviews.
Atlantis was just as organized as the SGC; a lot of people waiting and wanting to do what would only take a handful. Daniel, as the outsider in the group who had mostly been with the original expedition, found an out of the way corner to wait in and berate himself over missed opportunities. His stomach rolled and he almost wished he had tried to eat something just so he could throw it up.
Overhead, alarm bleared as the Gate came to life in front of them. Marines who were not part of Lorne’s rescue op took positions with their P-90s aimed up the ramp. The Gate finished dialing and with the familiar ka-whoosh, the wormhole roared into existence. Seconds later, one of the techs from the control room yelled out, “It’s Sheppard’s IDC!”
“Send the return code through! Med teams to the front!” Dr. Weir yelled as she raced halfway down the stairs.
Daniel stood but stayed at the back knowing he couldn’t do anything to help yet and would only be in the way. Teyla stumbled out first, nearly tripping over the threshold in a showing of exhaustion before one of Carson’s nurses got to her and led her away. She was filthy, covered in dirt and streaked with something that might be blood, though she appeared to be in shock and not actually wounded
Sheppard limped out of the puddle next, but stopped on the ramp and turned; waiting until Ronan and Rodney came through, carrying a stretcher between them. All three were panting with exhaustion and as dirty as Teyla, covered in blood and caked in mud. The Gate shut down, and with it, so did Daniel’s throat as he tried desperately to see if the figure on the stretcher was moving at all.
“Colonel, what happened?” Dr. Weir asked as they paused for fresh marines to replace Ronan and Rodney, and for Carson to try to stabilize Cameron.
“Civil war,” Sheppard said shortly, his voice aching with exhaustion. “We got caught in the middle of a skirmish and it took awhile to work our way around. I thought we were clear, but I missed a perimeter scout and we took fire. He stepped in front of a bullet for me.”
To Daniel, time slowed down as he tried to assimilate everything that was happening at once. A smell settled over the room comprised of burning, gun power, and blood. People were talking at once, though Rodney’s normally excitable voice was slurring, it still cut through keeping Dr. Weir’s attention, but Daniel was watching Sheppard watch Cameron.
Atlantis’ military leader kept his hand on Cameron’s arm and his attention on the prone figure while Carson flew around them both. Several emotions washed over Sheppard’s face before he shut down again and whispered, “Goddamn it Cameron.”
Time sped back up as Sheppard’s team was ushered to the infirmary and the entire mob tried to follow hot on their heels, leaving Daniel behind and alone. He took a few steps back until he hit the wall and let himself slide down. He put his head in his hands and tried to remember how to breathe.
