So I just saw the movie yesterday. I know I'm not the last in the world, but so much great meta has already been spread all over the internet that I don't really think I could add that much. So instead I thought I'd talk about a bit about my reactions but mostly that of my friends that went with me.

The scenery was just gorgeous. I loved the sheep herds, it reminded me of growing up with the cowboy culture. Ennis was perfect, just perfect. I felt so sorry for him, but in that day and age I can't see that I would have done anything different. His relationship with his children was heartbreaking. As a whole, I thought the movie was much more hopeful then the book appeared to be. At the end of the movie, I thought he was moving on past his own fright. I still don't know if it was the tire-iron or the tire, but I know that I want it to have been the tire.

I saw the movie with seven friends. R and I both thought the theater would be more crowded then it was, but was grateful to find we had our pick of seats. The theater was full of older people, I seriously think that we were the some of the youngest there. There were elderly couples, a group of older women, and then some random guys (60ish) that sat around us.

R had seen the movie twice before and kept getting more depressed with each viewing. He knew exactly when he was going to cry, and thus cried before in expectation. He's gay and not in a relationship, so the movie hits him particularly hard. I think that we both think kinda the same way, so I was really glad to have gotten the chance to watch it with him.

I thought that M would really like the movie. It should have really tugged on her heartstrings, but I failed to take into consideration the fact that she probably would identify most strongly with Jack Twist. She's the kind of person that strives to make impossible relationships probable. The fact that "she" then would die at the end of the movie having lived a pretty miserable existence probably led to her not liking the movie so much. Plus the fact that there wasn't a cameo by Vin Diesel and nothing got blown up probably didn't help.

L had read the story first (because she borrowed my book and hasn't given it back) and thought that reading it first impaired her viewing. She thought that since she already knew what was going to happen, it lessened the impact of it all. (I pretty much thought the exact opposite, because I knew I was going to cry, and thus did it more.)

K and Rh didn't really like the movie because they said it wasn't what they expected. I suppose that sometimes that's a valid point, but it's hard to swallow because I just loved this movie so goddamn much.
