I also enjoyed:

- this short profile from GQ about a good dude:The Remaking of Steve Buscemi

- this John Wick explained through a genre lens:What If I Told You John Wick Was a Portal Fantasy I still really like this series even if I do get a little bored with fight #37 because as beautiful as they are choreographed, there's only so much I can take.

I did io9's best sci-fi/fantasy movie from the last ten years bracket, and while I admit, I mostly went on gut instinct, I didn't expect Snowpiercer* to win my bracket. My final four were: Snowpiercer, District 9, Inception, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The only one-seed I haven't seen is Attack the Block which I'll need to put on my to-do list.

I mean, I guess I understand why so many MCU movies are there, they're popular, but I just don't automatically put superhero movies into the same category for storytelling as what a good sci-fi/fantasy can do. Especially disney/marvel. They're not going to go out on limb or challenge us or our preconceived notions. Winter Solider gets the closest probably, but even then as a single film it's hard to say that the themes are fleshed out enough to stick with us or to use as examples when arguing a point. Superhero movies are fun, but I love the short comic series that really have something to say, or the fanfic author that flips the table in anger and starts writing about the hard things.

Anywho, what is your final four? Who wins?

I just stumbled over Strange Planet, and these aliens delight me, especially their cat adventures. This one is my current favorite.

Speaking of cats, I haven't gotten very far in Love, Death and Robots on Netflix, and as I understand it there's a lot not to like there. However, the story Three Robots is funny, and while there's some language and it's a little crass, it's not otherwise objectionable, and the cat is right on point. This is definitely how humanity destroys itself. Many (most?) are based on stories, which I found out about here, and I just ordered Robots vs Fairies.

* I do love this movie, though it's not the easiest to rewatch. Chris Evans is doing real work here between the fight scenes and the emotion scenes. He's simply fantastic.
