Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dixon were at Conestoga and I so got to talk to them!
I haven't read anything too recent, some of Misty's new stuff just isn't my cup of tea, but I remember back in high school I would read her Valdemar series over and over again. The Gryphon series and the Storms series were my favorite books, and Skan and Karal were my favorite characters. Really, that universe is one of the first that made me want to write and do my own world building.
I am so mad at myself that I didn't take any of my hardbacks for them to sign, but I waited to talk to them and got them to sign my con program. They're both uber nice and approachable people, and Larry was hilarious. He likes to try to add a silent "q" or "x" to the ends of people's names. They went and crashed the next panel I went to, so I even got some extra time to bask. I asked a question which somehow led to a conversation with Larry about how much Transformers sucked. Seriously, this made the rest of my year, and perhaps ever.
I was scared to death to try to talk to Mercedes, and I wished I could have thanked her for writing about the work they did with volunteer fire fighters and rescue workers. I'm pretty sure between that and the theme of civic responsibility in her books, my place in the Fire and Emergency Management Program is partly because of her.
So, yeah, if y'all ever get the chance to meet them - do it. You won't regret it.
Panel notes tomorrow because I have a headache and I don't want to squint trying to decipher my handwriting.
