I wasn't going to do anything for this prompt, but then with the date I started thinking and figured I might as well throw those thoughts out into the void.
I was raised a Baptist brat, and a Rush Limbaugh listening republican. Otoh, I found slash (from the Buffyverse) early in my highschool years and fell madly in love. So then I became one of those "fiscally conservative, socially liberal" cowards - my knowledge/understanding of basically anything was as shallow as a rain puddle. I cheered on W and his wmd/oil war agenda.
I was lucky. I was curious. I found myself in a good group of fandom people who had the patience and mental energy to help me see the hypocrisy and the cruelty of the GOP. These people celebrated the good of the Democratic party and I jumped on the Obama bandwagon after he won the primary. . . and I alienated the majority of both sides of my family. Not badly, but looking back I see and remember that they all became incredibly condescending towards me and the things I newly cared about.
These Turning Point kids these days. It doesn't feel the same. I mean, we're too tired and out of patience, and they are calcified in a way I definitely wasn't. I don't understand how queer people could be republican. I don't understand how people involved in fandom could be republican. Fandom is so much bigger now than it was in the 90s.
I'm grateful I grew up when I did, and for the people who helped educate me.
I've decided to leave my inside tree and tinsel up until it actually snows. The 60-70 degree weather has been nice for my walking, but I want it to be cold, dang it. I'm also just going to keep using the icons too, since I missed December. : )

Date: 2026-01-07 08:37 pm (UTC)I'm the reason none of the rest of the family encourages their kids to go to either of the two big universities in state. It's too bad they're so set on missing other cultures - the food is wonderful. : )
