A retrospective: LOTR

My birthday is coming up, and I thought to acknowledge this stupid year of life I'd look back at the things I've been interested in the past. Y'all are very welcome to help me celebrate these fandoms or people.

LOTR on Fanlore
LOTRIPS on Fanlore

I mean check out that elf. Lord of the Rings is the first fandom mentioned in this journal, or at least the journals that were combined into this one. I think LOTR was the first thing that ever got me to write and share with other actual people. I think I mostly read/wrote Legolas/Boromir or Aragorn/Boromir and then I fell down the real people slash hole and it was awkward for everybody. It was the first community I was ever a part of, and I have fond memories. I think I've managed to forget all the not so fond memories very much like highschool.

Then The Two Towers came out, and what had started as a quickly passing, 'hey who was that elf' turned into 'he is my elf and how dare you kill him'. Let me show you my favorite hug up to that point in my fannishness (which brings up an interesting thing to rank -> hugs).

I think it was between this movie and Return of the King (which I know is a thing but is not my favorite though I don't remember why) that I came up with what has to be my most traumatic self-insert OC daydream even through today.

My OC was an Lorien elf who spied on Boromir bathing and fell in love. There was poorly managed flirting, and Boromir while bemused, did feel something different for this weirdo. It wasn't like he could abandon the mission though, so off he went to die. The elf took a while pining and finally went to follow, but he was so far behind, he arrived at Helm's Deep in time to help with the bodies while he searched for Boromir and same story different verse when he arrived at Minis Tirith.

Someone brings him in from of Aragorn who recognizes him and tells him what happened to Boromir. And my elf's brain just kinda breaks. Faramir, glad to have someone to morn with takes the elf (never did give him a name) under his wing. The elf goes out with patrols to put down the last of the orcs not destroyed by Mordor. And everything is mostly fine until Faramir's first son who he names Boromir. So now elf has someone to take care of, but also the kid grows up looking so much like the elf's first love. It's that line of not taking advantage cuz he wants the best for this kid and he definitely isn't it.

I'm sure I probably gave him a happy ending in one out of three daydreams? It was super heavy drama.

Anyway, I don't remember the last time I watched these movies. Maybe I'll do a marathon over this winter since they were xmas movies for so long. Do any of you have LOTR memories? Fics you can't forget? (I don't remember any at this point.)

What boggled my mind is that Craig Parker looks so different with the blond elf wig, that I didn't recognize him when he was in Spartacus Blood & Sand lol My mind is still blown tbh

Blond Craig Parker is not the best Craig Parker but I still appreciate seeing him at the top of the post :) (When he was cast as Darken Rahl in Legend of the Seeker they talked about him being blond again...he sent them the worst pic he could find from LOTR and they said, yeah, no, we'll get you a long dark wig! So the story goes!)

Legola's Very Secret Diary is my fave LoTR crack fic; I know Cassandra Clare is considered bad!wrong now but this was back before most of the bs went down and I still love it!
