Summery: Daniel can’t get McKay’s accusation that Cameron and Sheppard are together out of his mind.
It wasn’t that Daniel went out of his way to watch for times when Cameron and Sheppard went off together. It just seemed to happen, that he was nearby or going the same way. Especially since McKay had put the ludicrous idea in his head that they were sleeping together; an idea which, while insane, distracted him at the most inopportune moments.
This was why Daniel had fled the confines of the city to sit out in the sun and spend a quiet moment writing in his personal journal. That was before the current bane of his academic work had grown too hyper to be kept inside a crowded training room. Teyla led them out on a balcony just below and to the side of Daniel’s perch, so that Cameron could learn to fight with the sticks and Sheppard could learn to teach.
Daniel sighed and bent to concentrate on his writing, trying to tune out the grunts and laughter that the breeze was all too happy to bring to his ears. He glanced up once, searching for a word and saw that both men had stripped their shirts off and were panting with the effort of trying to gain leverage over the other. They were chest to chest, still smiling though their arms were shaking with the effort to overpower each other.
Without meaning to, Daniel snapped his journal shut and sent his pen flying over the edge and into the ocean. He let his eyes fall shut and his head fall back to crack against the wall with a dull ‘thud’. That had been his favorite pen too. A roar of success made him open his eyes and then wish desperately that he hadn’t as he saw that Sheppard had Cameron pinned on the ground, his slim hips just fitting between Cameron’s spread legs.
A commotion from inside distracted him from his rather uncharitable thoughts of Colonel Sheppard’s lineage, and he looked up to see Rodney stumbling out the door. Rodney blinked owlishly in the sunlight and looked around in confusion before he spotted Daniel on the floor with his back against the wall.
“What are you doing out here?” Rodney asked or accused depending on how well the person in question knows Dr. McKay, leaning lightly against the railing and adding, “Besides trying to infect yourself with skin cancer, that is.”
Daniel opened is mouth to reply, but quickly shut it again as Rodney proved that it did not actually take two to tango, by answering his own question.
“Oh, watching Sheppard and his Mini-Me, are you?” Rodney asked as he noticed Cameron and Sheppard up and sparring again on the lower level.
“I was here first,” Daniel mumbled regressing to his junior high level logic. When he and Cameron had been traveling to Atlantis it had seemed like he couldn’t turn around without tripping over the other man. Since they’d been here though, Cameron didn’t have that much free time to entertain bored archeologists/linguists/Ancient historians.
“I suppose some people might think it was cute the way Mitchell follows him around,” Rodney said over Daniel’s mumbling, his face getting that look that meant he was on the verge of a life-saving breakthrough or that the mess had run out of chocolate pudding. “And they’re probably physically dissimilar enough to compliment each other quite well in the bedroom.”
Daniel beat his head into the wall again and closed his eyes tight against the images he did not want converging on his brain. “Rodney!” he yelled to interrupt what was likely to become a whole lecture about Cameron and Sheppard’s bedroom habits. “Did you want something?”
“What?” Rodney turned back to him and gestured vaguely, “Oh, I think I’ve found the matching paper towel dispenser to go along with the spice rack you found the other day. I wanted to know if you want to take a look at it.”
Slowly, Daniel stood up and gathered his things, hoping that no one else could hear the snap that came from inside him. “Rodney,” he said very calmly, “and don’t take this the wrong way, but I don’t give a damn.”
As he turned to walk back inside and away from the sight of Cameron and Sheppard frolicking, Daniel missed the smirk that Rodney didn’t even try to hide.
